RICHARD E. FENNER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES K.
GILES, OF SAME PLACE.
. WATCH-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 323,654, dated August 4, 1885.
Application filed March 19, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Brennan E. Fnnnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in WVatch-Cases, which is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a plan view of a movement-box and center embodying my improve ment; Fig. 2, a section of the same, taken on the line 00 m, Fig. 1, and on an enlarged scale; Fig. 3, an elevation of the movement-box on the same enlarged scale, and Fig. i a cross section of the ring-center on the same enlarged scale. 7
My present invention relates to watch-cases in which an independent box or band is provided for the reception of the movement, to which is applied an independent ring-center; and the object of my improvement is to provide for the ready application and perfect ardjustmentof the center on the box, and the attachment to the latter of the back-cap.
The invention consists in certain special features of construction, which I will proceed to describe in detail, and will then point out definitely in the claim the special improvement which I believe to be new and wish to protect by Letters Patent.
In the drawings,A represents a box or band, which is designed to receive the watch-movement. This box has at its face or front edge a flange, a, projecting outward slightly all around the box, and the exterior surface of the latter is threaded the entire space up to this flange, this threaded portion being indicated by the letter a in the drawings. On the inside of the box there is provided near the front edge a seat, a, for the reception of the movement plate, and another similar seat, a near the back edge, also intended for the movement, thus providing means for supporting and securing the latter within the box. There is also made on the back edge of the box a small snap-flange, a", the purpose of which will be presently set forth. The center 13 is annular or ring-formed, and I prefer to though this particular feature of construction is not absolutely necessary. This center is adapted in form and size to be applied to the exterior of the box, and is provided with a screwthread, b, upon its interior surface, which corresponds to the exterior thread on the box, and so provides for fitting and securing the ring-center to the latter. The backcap C is constructed of such size and form as to be snapped over the flange a on the back edge of the box,and so secured to the latter by this ordinary fastening device, but at the same time made readily removable therefrom.
It is obvious from the description above that the ring-center may be turned upon the box make it solid, as shown in the drawings, U
until, finally, it is brought up tightly against the flange a on the latter, which flange is so located as to bring the center into the position desired when turned up tightly against it. The required position of the center is therefore fixed definitely, and is also readily secured, for it will always be obtained by turning the center clear up against the flange. The flange may be cut away at such places and to such an extent as may be desired. The center is provided with a pendant, D 5 and in fitting the parts together for use the center is first turned up tightly against the flange on the box, and then the latter is drilled through the pendant to provide a hole, (1, for the stem. No other fastening is required for securing the center to the box. I provide in this way a separate box, center, and back-cap, which are readily applied and fitted to each other or detached, as may be required. It willbe understood, of course, that in finishing up a complete case the remaining parts required are applied to the body here shown so as to provide either a hunter-case or open-face, as may be desired, the parts here shown and described being constructed and adapted to receive the other pieces of the case. These features, however, are not a part of my present invention, and so I have not shown and described them herein. They are so well known that watch case makers will readily apply them to my present improvements.
The present improvement is similar in the main feature-s of construction to an invention described and shown in an application of even date herewith, in which I have claimed more particularly the flange and threaded box and threaded ring-center. I do not therefore claim these parts particularly herein, but only in connection with the back-cap snapped on the box, my purpose being herein only to claim the particular and special construction dcscribed and shown.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a watch-case, an externally threaded movement box or band provided with an exterior flange near its front edge and a snapflange on its back edge, in combination with an internally-threaded ring-center and a backcap constructed to be snapped over the snapflange on the box, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
