SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 323,385, dated August 4, 1885.

To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, J. BERNARD APPLE, of the city of Philadelphia, in county of Philadelphia, State-of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hydrocar hon-Burners, of which the following is aspecification.
My invention has reference to hydrocarbon-burners; and it consists in an annularlygrooved tray having its center provided with a draft-regulating valve and its annular groove with water and oil coils or retorts; further, in the foregoing combined with a hood or cap covering the central draft-valve, but arranged in a manner as to leave an annular passageway for the air-currents; further, in combining with the foregoing specified parts a combined gas and blastnozzle arranged above and in the center of the said hood or cap; further, in providing the said illllllllill'lY-gIOGVBd tray with peculiarly curved walls, and combining with it water, oil, and steam coils, the hitter of which directs the flame up under the two former by means of small jets of steam being allowed to escape from said coil, and in many details oi construction, all of which are fully set forth in the following specification, and shown in the accompanying drawings, which lorm part thereof.
The objector" my invention is to provide an effective construction whereby the water and oil may be vaporized and utilized in a hydrocarbon-burner with a. maximum result, enabliug a perfect regulation of the gases generated and heat produced.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional ele ration of my improved hydrocarboubu rner as applied to a boiler, and is taken on line 00 as of Fig. 2; and Fig. 2 is a plan view of same, with the hood, central nozzle, and boiler removed.
A is the tray, and is provided with a horizontal flange, A, on the top, by which the burner, as an entirety, may be supported upon the grate-bars K of the boiler L, or upon brickwork, if desired. The outer walls of the tray are inclined, and the bottom is curved to form the annular groove A, its inner edge terminating in the knife-edge C; and the center B, located within said edge G, is made perforated and fitted with a damper or valve, D, pivoted to bottom 13 at d, and having a crank-pin, D, to which a rod, D'-', is pivoted, to enable the valve to be opened or closed.
Located above the valve D and center B is the hood or cup E, made cone-shaped and provided with supporting-feet c, which rest upon the knife-edge G, and are made to catch thereon. By this means the hood is supported some distance above the edge 0, leaving an annular passage-way, F, for the passage of the air from valve D to the interior of the tray and from under the hood.
G are coils of pipe for containing water, which is to be converted into steam for use in the burner. These coils are arranged conical to correspond with the walls of the tray, and rest on the ribs 9 in the bottom of the groove A, so as to be supported clear of the tray on the bottom, and they being of less diameter than the tray they leave a passageway between themselves and the wall of said tray also. ljhese coils are made more or less open to allow the heat to pass between each coil as well as up both sides. The water is fed in by the pipe G, (shown in dotted lines,)

l is the oil coil-pipe, by which the hydrocarbon gas is generated, and is simply a single coil located within the groove A of the tray, and concentric with the coils G. The oil is fed to this coil by pipe 1, (shown in dotted lines) and the hydrocarbon gas escapes by pipe The hydrocarbon gas is led to the injector J, which feeds a mixture of steam and hydrocarbon oil and vapor through a large pivoted nozzle, J, located above the hood or cap E, and pret'crabl y above its center. Steam from the pipe G is conveyed to said nozzle J, also, by a pipe, H", and the supply of gas and steam to said nozzle may be regulated by valves 1 H, located in pipes I H", which are brought outside of the boiler by putting elbows in them. (See Fig. 2.) The nozzle J maybe turned up or down, as desired, as it is adjustable.
H is a singlejetcoil for steam, and is located close to the passage-way F and edge C, and has its jet-orifices It pointing downwardly between the oil-coil I and the bottom of the groove A, and receives its supply of steam from the pipe G by a pipe,H,having a valve, H, to regulate its supply.
The operation is as follows: A little oil is allowed to flow into the groove A of the tray from the nozzle J, and is ignited. When the steam is generated in coils G, and the oil vaporized in the coils I, the supply of oil for the groove A is greatly reduced, or'shut oft altogether, and the mixture of gas, fine spray of hydrocarbon oil in a highly-heated condition, and steam which emerges from the nozzle J, is directed up or down, as desired, and the escaping oil falls on the hood, and any oil not consumed falls into the groove A. The
steam-jets from coil H cause an increased draft and insure the flame being directed under the coils I and G, as well as above and between them, and the peculiar curve given to the tray causes the flame to traverse the various parts in a most effective manner.
It is evident that more than one oil-coil I might be used, and that instead of the walls of the tray being inclined they may be vertical. The hood might be fiat instead of conical, and may be made integral with the tray instead of being removable therefrom, as shown. Therefore while the various parts may be modified or changed without deteriorating the working of the burner in a very material respect, I nevertheless prefer the construction shown.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a hydrocarbon-burner, a tray having an annular-groove, in combination with a draftregulating valve placed within the center bounded by said groove, and water and oil coils located within said groove, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a hydrocarbon-burner, a tray having an annular groove, in combination with a draftregulating valve placed within the center bounded by said groove, a hood or cap arranged above said valve, and water and oil coils located within said groove, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a hydrocarbon-burner, a tray having an annular groove, in combination with a draftregulating valve placed within the center bounded by said groove, a hood or cap arranged above said valve, a hydrocarbon-nozzle arranged above said hood or cap, and water and oil coils located within said groove, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. In a hydrocarbon-burner, a tray having an annular groove, in combination with a draftregulating valve placed within the center bounded by said groove, and water, steam, and oil coils located Within said groove, the steamcoils being provided with apertures to direct the flame over the other coils, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
5 In a hydrocarbon-burner, a tray having an annular groove, in combination with water and oil coils, a hood bounded by said groove, and a hydrocarbon-nozzle above said hood, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
6. In a hydroearbenburner, a tray having an annular groove, in combination with steam, water, and oil coils, a hood bounded by said groove and a hydrocarbon-nozzle above said hood, the steam-coil directing the fiame upon and among the other coils and spraying any oil which runs into the groove, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
7. The tray for a hydrocarbon-burner having annular groove A and central valved part, B, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
8. The tray for a hydrocarbon-burner having annular groove A and central valved part, B, in combination with the hood or cap E, hydrocarbon-nozzle above said hood, and airpassage F, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
9. The combination oftray A, having groove A, flange A, and central valved part, B, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
10. The combination oftray A, having groove A, valve D, coils G, H, and I, hood E, injector J, and nozzle J, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
11. The combination oftray A, havinggroove A, valve D, coils G, H, and I, hood E, injector J and nozzle J, pipes G I H H and valves 1 H H, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
