(Cl. 120-15) This invention relates to eyebrow pencils employing a positive feed for the crayon in both directions, with means for checking the feed. More particularly, the invention deals with a pencil structure, wherein the barrel and crayon guide and feed member have a common diameter, particularly where the member abuts the barrel and, further, wherein a Sharpener is detachably mounted on said member and checked by a stop ring mounted on the end portion of the barrel.

The novel features of the invention will be best understood from the following description, when taken together with the accompanying drawing, in which certain embodiments of the invention are disclosed and, in which, the separate parts are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views and, in which:

FIG. l is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view through a pencil made according to our invention, with parts of the construction shown in elevation; and

FIG. 2 is an enlarged section on the line 2 2 of FIG. 1.

At we have shown an elongated barrel or casing, having a closed end 11, said end including an inwardly projecting stop 12 arranged in the hexagon bore 13 of the barrel, said bore opening into and terminating at a larger diameter bore 14 extending through the open end of the barrel. The open end portion of the barrel has an annular recess l5, in which is supported a stop ring 16.

The barrel, inwardly of the open end, has a slight annular inward compression to form in the barrel 14 an annular reduced key portion 17. ln the construction shown, the barrel l@ is illustrated as formed of plastic material and the key portion 17 can be formed by a separate operation for the purposes later described.

At 18 is shown a tubular crayon guide and feed member, said member having a tubular portion 19 arranged in the bore 14, said portion having an annular recess 20 engaged by the key portion 17 in retaining the member 18 against displacement from the barrel 10. The member 1S is also preferably formed of plastic material, as indicated, and, in assembling the member 18 with the barrel, the open end portion of the barrel can be slightly heated to facilitate coupling of the member 18 with the barrel. On the other hand, the key portion can be formed after 18 has been assembled with the barrel by applying localized heat to the open end portion of the barrel. Substantially centrally of the lmember 1i) is an enlarged portion 21, the outside diameter of which is common to the outside diameter of the barrel 10, the enlarged portion forming a shoulder 22 seating upon the open end of the barrel, as well as the stop ring 1d which is applied prior to assembling the member 18- with the barrel.

The outer end portion of the enlarged body 21 has a rounded contraction 23, beyond which is an abruptly contracted tip 24. The bore 25 of the member 13 is of one diameter throughout the major portion of its length, the inner end of the tubular portion 19 being reduced and threaded, as indicated at 26, for engagement iby a feed screw 27.

This head also engages the stop 12 in checklng inward feed of the screw 27, the screw being shown in this checked position in FIG. l.

The opposed end of the screw 27 has a reduced threaded portion 30, in connection with which is mounted a crayon supporting thimble 3 1., having a socket 32 in which the inner end 33 of an eyebrow pencil crayon 34 is mounted.

It will be apparent that the length of the feed screw 27 is such as to feed substantially the entire length of the crayon 34 to sharpening and use position beyond the tip 24.

At 35 is shown a Sharpener device, comprising a large diameter tubular portion 36, having a positive frictional engagement with the enlarged portion 21 of the member 18, this engagement being such as to facilitate forcible movement of the Sharpener from the member 13. Outwardly of the portion 36 is a reduced tubular portion 37 which encircles the tip 24 and this reduced portion forms a frictional support for a removable cap 33. Secured within the outer end of the bore of the re lduced portion 37 is a suitable and generally conical Sharpener 39 for forming the contracted sharpened end 40 on the crayon 34.

It will be apparent that, by rotation of the barrel l@ and member 18 one with respect to the other, the crayon can be extended to operative position or retracted, as desired, in the use of the pencil as and when the Sharpener 35 is removed from the member 1S. On the other hand, when the parts are in the position shown in FlG. l, this same relative movement in outward feed of the crayon can operate to sharpen the end 40 of the crayon, either with the cap 3S in position or with this cap removed. In the irst instance, the chamber 38' of the cap is sufciently large to receive the shavings in the sharpening operation.

In the present illustration, the cap 38 has also been illustrated as formed of plastic, this illustrating, in combination with the other plastic illustrations, one adaptation and use of the invention. It will be apparent, however, that the particular type of material employed in the several parts of the pencil can be modified. It is also pointed out, at this time that, in the limit of outward movement of the feed screw, the hexagon head 29 will `strike the end 28 and, in this position, the head 29 will still be retained within the hexagon bore; so, at all times, the feed screw is maintained in operative position.

Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. An eyebrow pencil of the character defined cornprising an elongated body having a longitudinal bore at one end of angular cross-sectional form, said bore opening into a large diameter bore at the other end portion of the barrel, said large diameter bore having an inwardly extending annular key portion adjacent the last named end of the barrel, said last named end of the barrel having on its periphery an annular recess, a crayon guide and feed member comprising an elongated tubular portion mounted in the large diameter end of sald barrel, said tubular portion being recessed to receive the key portion of said barrel in retaining said member against displacement from the barrel while permltting free rotation of the member in said barrel, said member having adjacent the second named end of thebarrel an enlarged portion, the outside diameter of which is cornmon with the outside diameter of said barrel, said enlarged portion of the member terminating at its end in a contracted tip, a Sharpener device comprising an enlarged tubular portion frictionally coupled with the enlarged portion of said member and detachable with respect thereto, said device including a reduced tubular portion, a conical .Sharpener xed to and projecting beyond said reduced tubular portion, a cap detachably mounted on the reduced tubular portion of said Sharpener device, said member having a one diameter bore extending the major portion of its length, the bore terminating in the tubular portion of said member in a threaded bore, a feed screw in threaded engagement with said threaded bore and operating longitudinally in said barrel and member, one end of said feed Iscrew having an angular head keyed in the angular bore of said barrel for retaining the feed screw against rotation in the barrel while permitting longitudinal movement thereof in the barrel, a crayon supporting thimble mounted in connection with the other end of said feed screw, said thimble having at its free end means for engaging an inner end portion of a crayon tting snugly in the bore of said member, and a stop ring mounted in the annular recess at the second name end of said barrel for checking movement of the Sharpener device into engaged position with said member.

A pencil as dened in claim 1, wherein the inner end of the tubular portion of said member terminates in spaced relation to the inner end of the second named bore of said barrel, and said inner end of said member forming a stop engaged by the angular head of said feed screw in checking outward movement of the crayon wtih respect to said member.

3. A pencil as defined in claim 2, wherein the rst named end portion of said barrel has a closed end, and said closed end including an inwardly projecting stop engaged by the annular head of said feed screw in limiting inward feed ofthe crayon in said member.

4. A pencil as defined in claim 1, wherein said thimble is in threaded engagement with a reduced threaded portion on said feed screw.

Claims

1. AN EYEBROW PENCIL OF THE CHARACTER DEFINED COMPRISING AN ELONGATED BODY HAVING A LONGITUDINAL BORE AT ONE END OF ANGULAR CROSS-SECTIONAL FORM, SAID BORE OPENING INTO A LARGE DIAMETER BORE AT THE OTHER END PORTION OF THE BARREL, SAID LARGE DIAMETER BORE HAVING AN INWARDLY EXTENDING ANNULAR KEY PORTION ADJACENT THE LAST NAMED END OF THE BARREL, SAID LAST NAMED END OF THE BARREL HAVING ON ITS PERIPHERY AN ANNULAR RECESS, A CRAYON GUIDE AND FEED MEMBER COMPRISING AN ELONGATED TUBULAR PORTION MOUNTED IN THE LARGE DIAMETER END OF SAID BARREL, SAID TUBULAR PORTION BEING RECESSED TO RECEIVE THE KEY PORTION OF SAID BARREL IN RETAINING SAID MEMBER AGAINST DISPLACEMENT FROM THE BARREL WHILE PERMITTING FREE ROTATION OF THE MEMBER IN SAID BARREL, SAID MEMBER HAVING ADJACENT THE SECOND NAMED END OF THE BARREL AN ENLARGED PORTION, THE OUTSIDE DIAMETER OF WHICH IS COMMON WITH THE OUTSIDE DIAMETER OF SAID BARREL, SAID ENLARGED PORTION OF THE MEMBER TERMINATING AT ITS END IN A CONTRACTED TIP, A SHARPENER DEVICE COMPRISING AN ENLARGED TUBULAR PORTION FRICTIONALLY COUPLED WITH THE ENLARGED PORTION OF SAID MEMBER AND DETACHABLE WITH RESPECT THERETO, SAID DEVICE INCLUDING A REDUCED TUBULAR PORTION, A CONICAL SHARPENER FIXED TO AND PROJECTING BEYOND SAID REDUCED TUBULAR PORTION, A CAP DETACHABLY MOUNTED ON THE REDUCED TUBULAR PORTION OF SAID SHARPENER DEVICE, SAID MEMBER HAVING A ONE DIAMETER BORE EXTENDING THE MAJOR PORTION OF ITS LENGTH, THE BORE TERMINATING IN THE TUBULAR PORTION OF SAID MEMBER IN A THREADED BORE, A FEED SCREW IN THREADED ENGAGEMENT WITH SAID THREADED BORE AND OPERATING LONGITUDINALLY IN SAID BARREL AND MEMBER, ONE END OF SAID FEED SCREW HAVING AN ANGULAR HEAD KEYED IN THE ANGULAR BORE OF SAID BARREL FOR RETAINING THE FEED SCREW AGAINST ROTATION IN THE BARREL WHILE PERMITTING LONGITUDINAL MOVEMENT THEREOF IN THE BARREL, A CRAYON SUPPORTING THIMBLE MOUNTED IN CONNECTION WITH THE OTHER END OF SAID FEED SCREW, SAID THIMBLE HAVING AT ITS FREE END MEANS FOR ENGAGING AN INNER END PORTION OF A CRAYON FITTING SNUGLY IN THE BORE OF SAID MEMBER, AND A STOP RING MOUNTED IN THE ANNULAR RECESS AT THE SECOND NAME END OF SAID BAREL FOR CHECKING MOVEMENT OF THE SHARPENER DEVICE INTO ENGAGED POSITION WITH SAID MEMBER.
