Filed Mar. 2, 1965, Scr. No. 436,451 8 Claims. (Cl. 222-570) This invention relates to paint can attachments and more particularly to annular attachments which are adapted to be readily mounted on and detached from the brim of a conventional paint can.
An object of our invention is to provide a novel paint can attachment which will maintain the brim of a conventional paint can free from paint, thereby, facilitating the reclosing of the can in a tight manner to prevent deterioration of the remaining paint in the can.
Another object of our invention is to provide a novel paint can attachment which will function as a brush wipe for removing excess paint from the brush after it has been dipped into the paint.
Another object of our invention is to provide a novel paint can attachment which will facilitate the pouring of paint from the can without dripping paint down the outside of the can.
Still another object of our invention is to provide an inexpensive paint can attachment of simple plastic construction which can be securely mounted on and easily detached from the brim of a conventional paint can.
A further object of our invention is to provide a novel paint can attachment of the character described which can be readily attached to the paint can in an inoperative position for storage after the cover of the can has been replaced.
Further objects, features, and advantages of our invention will be apparent from the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein a preferred embodiment of our invention has been selected for exemplification.

Referring now particularly to the drawings, in FIG. 1, numeral 10 generally designates a conventional paint can having our attachment, generally shown at 20, mounted thereon.
As best seen in FIG. 4, the conventional paint can 10 has an annular sheet metal brim 11 and a cylindrical sheet metal side wall 12. The top edge of the side wall is bent backwardly on itself to form an external peripheral flange 13. The brim 11 has an inner edge 14 and an outer edge 15 which is bent outwardly around and under the external peripheral flange 13 to fixedly clamp the 'brim 11 on the paint can wall 12. The bri-m 11 has a gutter portion 16 between edges 14 and 15 for frictionally receiving the downwardly protruding flange 17 of the paint can cover 18 as shown in FIG. 7.
3,221,955 Patented Dec. 7, 1965 FIGS. 1-3 depict the general figuration of our paint can attachment 20 and show a dished rim portion 21 having an upwardly and forwardly extending pouring spout 22, a depending skirt portion 23 adapted to be snapped over the outer edge 15 of the brim 11 of a conventional paint can, and a rearwardly disposed removal tab 24.
Referring now to FIGS. 4 and 5, the rim portion 21 has a dished top surface 25 and an upwardly protruding outer peripheral edge 26. The inner peripheral edge 27 of the rim portion 21 is preferably a sharp edge which will effectively wipe or scrape excess paint from a brush as the brush is wiped across it after having been dipped into the paint in the can.
The underside 28 of the rim portion 21 has a pair of depending annular ridges 29 and 30 spaced outwardly from the innersharp edge 27. The depending ridges 29 and 30 define a channel 31 therebetween which is substantially the same width as the inner edge 14 of the paint can brim 11. The channel 31 is adapted to receive the inner edge 14 of brim 11 and ridges 29 and 30 are adapted to tightly abut the edge 14 so as to prevent paint from entering and accumulating in the gutter portion 16 of the paint can brim 11. Thus, when the paint can is tipped forwardly to pour paint over the spout 22 the brim gutter 16 is effectively sealed off from the paint.
The attachment is provided with a substantially vertically disposed annular skirt 23 depending from adjacent the outer peripheral edge 26 of a rim portion 21. The skirt 23 has an inwardly protruding bead 32 thereon which is adapted to be engaged under the outer edge 15 of the paint can brim 11 as seen in FIG. 5.
An annular flange 33 depends from the underside 28 of the rim 21. The flange 33 is spaced inwardly from the skirt 23 to define a groove 34 adapted to receive the outer edge 15 of the paint can brim 11.
The attachment 20 is preferably a molded unit made of a flexible plastic material which is adapted to be pressed onto the brim of a paint can. The downward pressure on the rim portion 21 will cause the skirt 23 to be flexed outwardly as the head 32 passes downwardly over the outer edge 15 of paint can brim 11. The skirt 23 will then spring or snap inwardly as the bead 324s received under the edge 15 of the brim 11 and the attachment 20, will thus, be tightly held on the paint can.
As shown in FIG. 6, the attachment 20 as provided with a removal tab 24 for readily detaching the attachment 20 from the brim of a paint can. The tab 24 is attached to the skirt portion 23 and is preferably located diametrically opposite the pour spout 22 as best seen in FIG. 2. To remove the attachment 20 from the paint can 10. the tab 24 is manually pivoted upwardly as shown in FIG. 6 which causes the skirt portion 23 to be flexed outwardly so as to disengage the bead 32 from under the outer edge 15 of the brim 11. The attachment 20 may then be easily pulled off of the brim of the paint can.
Referring to FIG. 7, the tab 24 may be provided with a clip portion 35 which is adapted to be snapped onto the outer edge 15 of the paint can brim 11, either wit-h the cover 18 removed from the can or with it in place. Thus, the attachment 20 may be conveniently stored with the paint can 10.
It is apparent that our plastic attachment is structurally simple and is, therefore, relatively inexpensive to manufacture. It may be easily snapped onto the brim of a conventional paint can in a secured manner so as not to he accidentally dislodged during use, and yet, it may be easily and quickly detached when desired.
When attached to the brim of n paint can in an opera tlonal position, our device will effectively seal off the gutter of the 'brim to maintain it free of paint so that the can made be tightly rcclosed to safeguard the unused paint.
The attachment may also be attached in an inoperative position on a closed can of paint for display purposes or for convenient storage.
It is understood that our invention is not confined to the particular construction and arrangement of parts herein illustrated and described, but embraces all such modified for-ms thereof, as may come within the scope of the following claims.
I claim:
1. An attachment adapted to be mounted on the annular brim of a pain can, said brim having an outer edge secured to the wall of said paint can, an inner edge, and a gutter between said edges, said attachment comprising:
(a) a continuous annular rim portion having a dished top surface,
(b) a pair of spaced annular ridges depending from the underside of said rim portion and being adapted to grip the inner edge of the brim of said paint can therebetween for preventing paint from accumulating in the gutter of the brim of said paint can,
(c) an annular skirt depending from said n'm portion,
((1) an annular flange depending from the underside of said rim portion and spaced inwardly from said depending annular skirt to define a groove adapted to receive the outer edge of the brim of said paint can.
2. The attachment as specified in claim 1 wherein said annular rim portion has a forwardly extending pouring spout.
3. The attachment as specified in claim 1 wherein said annular rim portion has a sharp edge extending inwardly of said annular ridges.
4. The attachment as specified in claim 1 wherein said depending annular skirt has an inwardly protruding bead thereon adapted to be engaged under the outer edge of the brim of said paint can.
5. An attachment adapted to be mounted on the annular brim of a paint can, said brim having an outer edge secured to the wall of said paint can, an inner edge and a gutter between said edges, said attachment comprising:
(a) a continuous annular rim portion having a dished top surface, a forwardly extending pouring spout and an inwardly extending knife-edge,
(b) a pair of spaced annular ridges depending from the underside of said rim portion to define an inner annular groove to receive the inner edge of the brim of said paint can, said ridges being adapted to tightly abut the inner edge of the brim of said paint can for preventing paint from accumulating in the gutter of the brim of said paint can,
(c) an annular skirt depending from adjacent the outer edge of said annular rim portion,
(d) an annular fiange depending from the underside of said rim portion and being spaced inwardly from said skirt to define an outer annular groove to receive the outer edge of the brim of said paint can, said annular skirt having an inwardly protruding bead thereon adapted to be engaged under the outer edge of the brim of said paint can.
6. An attachment adapted to be mounted on the annular hum of a paint can, said brim having an outer edge secured to the wall of said paint can, an inner edge and a gutter between said edges, said attachment comprising:
(a) a continuous annular rim portion having a dished top surface, (b) a pair of spaced annular ridges depending from the underside of said rim and being adapted to tightly abut the inner edge of the brim of said paint can for preventing paint from accumulating in the gutter of the brim of said paint can,
(0) an annular skirt depending from adjacent the outer edge of said rim portion, said depending skirt having an inwardly protruding bead thereon adapted to be engaged under the outer edge of the brim of said paint can,
((1) an annular flange depending from the underside of said rim portion and being spaced inwardly from said depending skirt to define a groove for receiving the outer edge of the brim of said paint can,
(0) a removal tab attached to said depending skirt and protruding outwardly therefrom, said tab being adapted to be manually swung upwardly so as to flex said depending skirt outwardly to disengage said bead from under the outer edge of the brim of said paint can.
7. The attachment as specified in claim 6 wherein said removal tab has a clip portion on the top side thereof adapted to receive the outer edge of the brim of said paint can for suspending the attachment therefrom in an inoperative position.
8. A flexible plastic attachment adapted to be mounted on the annular brim of a paint can, said brim having an outer edge secured to the wall of said paint can, an inner edge and a gutter between said edges, said attachment comprising:
(a) an annular rim portion having a dished top surface and an upwardly and forwardly extending pouring spout and an inwardly extending knife-edge,
(b) a pair of spaced annular ridges depending from the underside of said rim portion, said ridges being adapted to tightly abut the inner edge of the brim of said paint can for preventing paint from accumulating in the gutter of the brim,
(c) an annular skirt depending from adjacent the outer edge of said rim, said skirt having an inwardly protruding bead thereon being adapted to be engaged under the outer edge of the brim of said paint can,
(d) an annular flange depending from the underside of said rim portion and spaced inwardly from said depending skirt to define an outer groove adapted to receive the outer edge of the brim of said paint can,
(e) a removal tab attached to said depending skirt and protruding outwardly therefrom, said tab being adapted to be manually swung upwardly to fiex said skirt outwardly so as to disengage said head from under the outer edge of the brim to facilitate removal of the attachment from said paint can, said removal tab having a clip portion on the top side thereof adapted to engage the outer edge of the brim of said paint can for suspending the attachment therefrom in an inoperative position.

Claims (1)

1. AN ATTACHMENT ADAPTED TO BE MOUNTED ON THE ANNULAR BRIM OF A PAIN CAN, SAID BRIM HAVING AN OUTER EDGE SECURED TO THE WALL OF SAID PAINT CAN, AN INNER EDGE, AND A GUTTER BETWEEN SAID EDGES, SAID ATTACHMENT COMPRISING: (A) A CONTINUOUS ANNULAR RIM PORTION HAVING A DISHED TOP SURFACE, (B) A PAIR OF SPACED ANNULAR RIDGES DEPENDING FROM THE UNDERSIDE OF SAID RIM PORTION AND BEING ADAPTED TO GRIP THE INNER EDGE OF THE BRIM OF SAID PAINT CAN THEREBETWEEN FOR PREVENTING PAINT FROM ACCUMULATING IN THE GUTTER OF THE BRIM OF SAID PAINT CAN, (C) AN ANNULAR SKIRT DEPENDING FROM SAID RIM PORTION, (D) AN ANNULAR FLANGE DEPENDING FROM THE UNDERSIDE OF SAID RIM PORTION AND SPACED INWARDLY FROM SAID DEPENDING ANNULAR SKIRT TO DEFINE A GROOVE ADAPTED TO RECEIVE THE OUTER EDGE OF THE BRIM OF SAID PAINT CAN.
