Description
(No Modei.) A. G. EVANS.
HARROW.
No. 321,805. Patented July 7, 1885 Wit EEE-ES- fl;fWVL,
. NirED STATES PATENT Fries.
AUSTIN O. EVANS, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO.
HARRQW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 321,805, dated July- '7, 1885.
Application filed February 9, 1885.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Ansrnv (Ii. EVANS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harrows; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in harrows.
My invention relates to that class of harrows which have their sections flexibly connected together; and it pertains more particularly to three-section harrows, in which the outside sections are operated by a longitudinal lever pivoted over the middle section, and connected by chains with the outside sections.
My invention consists in a single link connecting the operating-lever and the rear of the middle section, to allow the lever to be thrown from side to side in operating the outside sections without disconnecting it from the rear end of the middle section, to allow the latter to be elevated thereby, and to cause the lever .to recover its normal position when let go by the operator.
Figure 1 is a top view of a three-section barrow with my improvement embodied therein. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the middle section, and the lever thereon shown in its normal position. Fig. 4 is an enlarged view of the link in longitudinal elevation.
A is the middle section of the harrow, A A, the two outside sections hinged thereto.
B is the lever, which extends over the central longitudinal line of section A, its front end being loosely pivoted in a guideway on the front end of the section. It is connected from either side with the outside sections by chains a a, and stands at an angle with the plane of the harrow, as seen in Fig. 3. It is held in its elevated position by means of a long link, I), (which connects the lever and the rear end of section A together,) and by the tension of chains (4 a. In the normal position (No model.)
As soon as the lever is freed from the hand of 6 the operator and the lifted section falls to the ground or to the same plane with the other sections link I) is pulled back to a perpendicular again, which brings the hand-lever B to its normal position.
The plates d and d, in which the upper and lower ends, respectively, of link I) are pivoted, consist of a malleable iron plate with a pair of ears or lugs thereon extending vertically therefrom; and the ends of the link being formed in the manner of a bent ring, similar to a link of a surveyors chain, a small bolt or pin, 0 and c, is inserted through the holes in the ears and through the intermediate link.
end. By reference to Figs. 2 and 3 it will be noticed that the lugs or cars of the plates (2! and d stand transversely, so as to allow the link absolute freedom of movement toward either side of section A when lever B is operated. The upper plate, (I, being inclined to conform to the line of leverB, its ears project at something less than a right angle therefrom. It is bolted to the under side of the lever, as seen in Fig. 3. Plate (1 is bolted to bar (1, which latter extends across the rear end of section A, as is usual in the construction. of this kind of harrow.
I do not claim a lever which is detachable, as the purpose of my lever is to retain it in an operative position with freedom of movement in either direction without detaching it from its support.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a three-section harrow having its sections hinged together and operated by a lever, as specified, the combination, with the latter and the middle section,of a link pivotally connecting the same, whereby said lever is free to operate toward either side of said middle section in elevating the outside sections with out changing its point of attachment to the latter, or detaching it therefrom.
2. In a threescction harrow operated by a lever loosely pivoted at the front end over the middle section, and connected by chains with the outside sections, as set forth, the combination, with the lever, the chains, and the harrow-sections, of a link pivoted, respectively, to said lever and the rear of the middle section, whereby said lever is supported in its elevated position by said link and the tension of the chains, and is adapted to move freely around its pivotal connection in elevating said side sections without disconnecting it from its pivotal point of support on said middle section.
3. In a three-section harrow, a lever extend-
