(Cl. 112-151) This invention relates to a guide for sewing decorative material to a base material.

An object of the invention is the provision of a tubular guide for decorative material as it is being sewed onto a base material, which guide is adjustable to the width of the decorative material and which may be disposed at various angles from a vertical to a horizontal position, and it is also adjustable vertically, laterally, and forward and backward, relative to the foot.

Another object is the provision of an edge guide for the base material on which a decorative material is being sewed, which edge guide is adjustably connected to the tubular guide above mentioned.

The drawings illustrate the invention, and in these:

FIG. 1 is a front view of the device attached to the foot bar of a sewing machine, with a foot depending from the foot bar;

Referring to the drawings for a detailed description, the numeral 17 indicates a flat, elongate tube through which decorative material passes just before being sewed onto a base material. The tube is shown, in FIGS. 1 and 2, and in the vertical position, in which the decorative material comes down vertically from above the tube, and after passing through it, turns forwardly to pass under the foot 19, the tube being held above the functional part of the foot as shown in FIGS. 1 and 2. The foot, as usual, is secured to the pressure foot bar 20.

To guide different widths of decorative material through the tube, a pair of similar, adjustable guides 22 pass vertically through the tube, and are separately movable lengthwise thereof. Each guide (FIG. 13) is in two connected but separable parts, viz., a lower part 25 which is externally threaded at its upper end portion, and a hollow, internally threadedly, upper part 26 which threadedly connects with the lower part and constitutes a thumbscrew. The lower part extends upwardly through the tube and has an enlarged lower end 27, which end abuts a lower internal shoulder 28 formed in the tube 17. The thumbscrew 26, when tightened, abuts an upper internal shoulder 29 formed in the tube 17. When the movable guides are properly placed and tightened in the tube, the

The tube 17 may be moved to any position from the vertical to the horizontal, being swivelly connected, at its right hand end, by a screw 32, to one end of a right-angle connecting bar 33 (FIGS. 1, 2, l0 and 11). This bar extends rearwardly from its point of connection with the tube 17, and at its angle turns left, parallel with the tube, to be adjustably fastened to a clamping connector 35 (FIG. 2). The connector 35 is fastened to the pressure foot bar 20 of the machine, being adjustable angularly relative thereto, so that the tube 17 may be adjusted to a desired height above the foot 19. The connector 35 receives, near its rear end, the bar 33, and is there split. A screw 37 (FIG. 2) passes through the split end position and tightens the bar in a desired lengthwise position to the connector 35, the tube thereby being adjustable to the right or left relative to the foot 19. The connector 35 has an open slot at its lower end (FIG. 2) through which it receives a fastening bolt to adjustably connect it angularly, and also forwardly and backwardly, to the foot bar.

The tube 17 is sometimes used in the flat position, in which position its front face of the vertical or upright position becomes the bottom, which then rests on the table and in front of the foot. For such position, a guide 40 (FIGS. 1 and 12) is adjustably secured to the bottom of the tube, as positioned in FIG. 1, and serves to guide the right hand edge of the base material, and is called a goods guide. Guide 40 is elongate and has a slot 41 lengthwise of its main portion to receive a threaded bolt 43 (FIGS. 1 and 12) which passes through aperture 44 (FIGS. 5 and 6) in a corner of the tube. The goods guide, adjoining the slot, is channel-shape. A nut 45 (FIGS. 1 and 12) engages bolt 43 and, when tightened, presses against the bottom of the channel. Guide 40 includes an end portion 40A (FIG. 1) which is at right angles to the slotted portion of the guide, and has a straight edge for guiding the base material when correctly positioned relative to the length of the guide.

The foot 19 is secured to the foot bar 20 of the machine; it has an eye 46 and a lateral projection 47 which prevents the marginal portion of the base material from curling up. The foot 19 is not split, as the usual sewing machine foot is. In front of the opening 46 for the needle, it has a rising finger guard 50, from one end of which guard the anti-curling projection extends, as shown in FIGS. 1, 2, 7, 8 and 9.

What is claimed is:
