Beit known that I, JOHN NnviLLn, of Jer sey City, in the county of Hudson and State ot' New Jersey, have invented acertaiu new and useful Improvement in Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a combined furnace having smelting and roasting chambers, the heat and products of combustion of the smelting-chamber being utilized for heating the roasting-chamber.

)Iy invention consists in a horizontal fur nace comprising a smelting-chamber accessible through doors at the side and outer end and a roasting-chamber at right angles thereto, accessible through doors at the sides, as herein after described, and pointed outin the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved furnace, partly in horizontal section on the line 1 l, Fig. 3. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2 2, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 3 3, Fig. l.

My furnace has a snielting-chamber, A, and roasting-chamber B at right angles thereto. rlhese chambers are connected by a flue, C, so that the products of combustion and heat pass from the smelting-charnber A. to the chimney D through the roasting-chamber B as their only outlet. The direction of the heat and products of combustion is indicated by the arrows.

The smelting-chamber A, l prefer to heat as follows: N is the fire-chamber, having hetween it and the smelting-chamber a bridgewall, O, formed with a hollow hot-air chamber, J, communicating with the chamber A by means of pipes I and passages L, as shown in Figs. l and 2, air being admitted into the bridge-wall chamber through a pipe, M. Access is had to the floor of the smelting-chaniber through doors l P at the side and outer end, respectively.

Above the floor of the roasting-chamber is a horizontal partition to divide the upper portion, 0"', from the lower portion, C. The chimney D or outlet therefrom being located above the iiue G, the heat and products of combustion first pass through the lower portier, C,

then up and over the partition C' and through L the upper portion, C'", to the chimney or out.- let. Q are doors by which access can be had to the door of the roasting-chamber.

The chamber B being at right angles to the chamber A, access can he had to the forward end as well as the side of the latter, and the chimney as located is in a central position.

I claim as my inventionl. The horizontal furnace herein described, comprising smeltingchamberA, having doors P P at the side and outer end, respectively, and the roastingchamber B, at right angles to the smeltingchambcr, connected to the latter by a iiue, G, and having doors, substantially as set forth.
