SPECIFICATION forming part ofLetters Patent No. 320,984, dated June 30, 1885.

T0 on whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEoNARnTHEIs, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Oabery, in the county of Ford and State of Illinois, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cultivator Attachments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a vertical central longitudinal section of a cultivator-frame, showing a side elevation of one of the improved attachments as it would appear attached to a cultivator, and having a scraper-blade attached and set to scrape the soil toward the center of the cultivator. Fig. 2 is a top plan View of the two or twin attachments attached to a cultivator, having a pair of scraper-blades attached and set in a similar position to that of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a single attachment, showing its perforated twin beams, and showing four perforated standards with cultivatorshovels attached. Fig. 4 is a plan view on top of a pair of scraperblades, showing them set at an angle to scrape the soil from the center outward. Fig. 5 is a cross-section of the inner beams of each of the twin attachments in front of their pivoted connecting-yoke, show ing the manner in which the yoke is attached to said beams. Fig. 6 is a side view of a broken-away portion of one of the inner beams of one of the twin attachments, showing the manner in which the spring-retaining latch of the connecting yoke is attached. Fig. 7 is a front view of one of the scraper-blades, to show more clearly the curved slotted plates for attaching the blades to the attachment standards. Fig. Sis a crosssection of one of the attachment standards and of a curved slotted attaching-plate of the scraper-blade at the place where said plate is attached to the standard. Fig. 9 is a perspective view of one of the braces, and Fig. 10 is a top plan view of one end of one of the scraper-blades and one of its standard attachments, and a cross-section of a standard.
This invention" relates to certain improvements in a scraper and cultivating attachment for cultivators; and it consists in the particular construction and arrangement of a pair of perforated twin standard-beams,their connectingyoke, and their perforated standards, and

each having a pair of curved slotted attachingplates adapted to attach to and be held by the standard at any desired angle in either direction, which improvements will be fully set forth and explained in the following specification and claims.
. Referring to the drawings, B B represent the twin standard-beams of the twin attachments, each being provided along their rear portion with the rows of holes or perforations 0. (See Figs. 1 and 3.) The front ends of these twin beams are arranged to be attached to any cultivator. To the rear portion of said beams B B are bolted the scraper or shovel standards S, which are each provided with a row of holes or perforations, 0. (See Figs 1, 2, and 3.)
A brace, D, forked at its lower end and pivoted by means of such fork to the scraper or shovel standard, and having a row of holes or perforations, c in its upper port-ion, is used to connect said scraper or shovel standards with said twin beams B B. The bolts which attach said braces D to the beams B B may pass through an upper hole, 0 in said braces, to hold the scraperblade P at a scraping angle, as shown in Fig. 1; or said bolts may pass through the said holes 0 nearest the center of said braces, thus holding the lower ends of the standards nearer the beams B B, to hold the said scraper-blade at a cutting angle so it will shear or cut off weeds and grass at or near the sides of rows or hills of corn or other growing crops and not scrape too much soil around the plants being cultivated, permitting .the most of the soil which is loosened by the scraper-blade to pass over it.
To each of the said twin attachments is attached a handle, H, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and
3, for convenience in handling said attachnients.
Between each of the said twin beams B B is arranged a block, m, (sceFig. 2,) to hold said beams at a proper distance apart.
To the upper surface of the inner beams B B of the twin attachments are respectively attached a pair of ear-lugs, 12, between which one end of connecting-yoke o is pivoted, and a pair of slotted standards, 2, between which the opposite and notched end of said connecting-yoke passes. (See Figs. 2, 5, and 6.) Arranged within the slots of and pivoted to one of the standards is a retaining-arm held to its work by means of thecoil-spring t, so it may engage the. notches b of yoke 12, to hold said beams B B at any desired distance apart, and operated to unlatch it from the notches b by means of the hand-lever a of one of handles H through the medium of rod R. (See Figs. 1, 5, and 6.) Thus an operator can while at work change and regulate the distance between the scraper-blades or shovels by simply pressing the hand-lever a.
To and near each end of each scraper-blade P is attached a curved slotted plate, P, as shown in Figs. 1, 7, and 8, which are so arranged as to be attached to the lower ends of the standards S by means of bolts (1, passed through the slots 10 of said plates and holes in the said standards, as shown more particularly in Fig.8. By thus connecting the scraper-blades to the standards they may be partially rotated on said standards and the bolts d work in the slots w,so the scraper-blades may be set at any desired scraping angle in either direction without having to change or remove the said blades or do more than loosen the bolts d, while the standards S are being shifted to the desired position, when the attachments are used as a cultivator.
Four shovel standards may be used, arranged as shown inFig. 3.
The braces D may, when the standardsS are moved toward the center of the beams B B, be arranged in the rear of the said standards, and they may have a slot, as shown at c in Fig. 9, in place of the row of holes 0 If desired, the upright curved plates 1? of scraper-blades 1? may extend entirely around the standard S to form a socket for the standard, as shown in Fig. 10.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new,and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows, to Wit:
In the cultivator and scraper shown and described, the co1nbination,with the beams B B, both pivotal] y attached to the cultivator-frame at their front ends and each having the adjustable standards S and adjustable braces D, of the yoke or arch-beam 12, having the row. of notches b at one end and pivotally attached at one end to one 01" said beams,and adj ustably attached at its opposite notched end to the other one of said beams, forked standard .2, having the latch b, coil-spring t, and rod R, for connecting said latch with the hand-lever a, pivotally attached to the outer end of the handle H, as and for the purpose set forth.
