HERBELT H. CUMBACK, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO JOHN A. BLOUNT, OF SAME PLACE.
ROTARY PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,853, dated June 23, 1885.
Application filed March 5, 1883. Renewed June 1, 18 5 (No model.) 7
bination of devices hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a plan view of a rotary plow with my improved steering device attached thereto, and Fig. 2 is a partial sec-- tional elevation of the steering device.
It will be observed that I have on the drawings represented the steering device in two positions, one in dotted and the other in full lines. I have done this for the purpose of showing its application to different parts of the machine, although the one shown by full lines would probably be found the most serviceable, inasmuch as it would act with increased leverage while engaged in obviating the lateral movement of the tongue, and thereby lessen the side draft of the machine. lVith plows of this construction it is necessary to locate the rotary cutters in a line that is oblique to the line of travel of the machine in order that the soil may be properly turned and the ground over which the machine passes be properly covered by the several cutters. When the cutters are thus obliquely arranged ,a large amount of side draft results therefrom, rendering it very difficult to keep the machine in the desired course of travel; but with my improved steering device this difficulty can be entirely overcome.
I do not to wish to confine myself to the particular shape or construction of this steering device, as other shapes and constructions will answeras,- for example, a plain disk or a disk with serrated edges.
The construction of the machine as represented is as follows:
a represents the carrying-wheels; b, the main frame; a, the rotary cutters; d, the
unnecessary. I will therefore confine myself to a the construction of the adjustable steering de-' vice. The rotary cutter is journaled in a bifurcated arm, 5 by means of a bolt, h. The arm 9 is joined to an arm, i, through the agency of a joint, Z, formed with serrated surfaces on each of the arms 9 z, in the manner shown in the drawings. These serrated surfaces lock together at any point, and permit the arm g to be adjusted to any angle relative to the arm 2' in a vertical direction. They are secured together, when so adjusted, by means of a screw-bolt, m. By this means the arm g may be regulated. to cause the cutter f to penetrate the soil to suit the varying conditions of the machine.
The arm 2' is constructed to slide in acurved slot, at, that is formed in the metallic piece 1), which is securely bolted to the framing of the machine. The end of said arm that moves in said slot is turned up, so as to form a wide guide, q,which tends to keep it steady in the slot, and prevents its movement in a lateral direction after it has been adjusted. To hold the guide q in place, I use a screw bolt, r. By this construction and arrangement of parts an adjustment of the steering device ispossible either in a horizontal or vertical direction, or both, as occasion requires.
I am aware that a steering-wheel has heretofore been connected with the rear portion of a rotary plow-frame, so as to be adjusted both laterally and vertically; also that a cutting steering-wheel has been mounted in a frame attached to a rotary plow-frame and connected with the latter, so that the wheel can be adjusted laterally; and, further, that a coltcr has been so connected with a plowbeam as to be adjusted laterally and vertically. Such, therefore, I do not broadly claim; but,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a wheeled rotary plow, substantially as set forth, and in combination with the frame I In testimony whereof I have hereunto set b b, the rotary rudder-disk f, journaled in the my hand this 22d day of February, 1883. bifurcated arm 1 havin serrated face to correspond with the arm having similar face, HERBERT OUMBACK' 5 the bracket ;,having slot n,and the adj usting- Witnesses: nut r, all adapted and arranged as and for the HENRY MILLWARD,
purposes set forth.
E. S. WALLACE.
