DEVICE FOR THE COMBUSTION OF LIQUID FUEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,533, dated June 23,1885,
Application filed January 22, 1883.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, JOHN D. BODwELL, of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improved Device for the Combustion of Liquid Fuels; and I hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to an apparatus in which the combustion of liquid fuel may be carried on, and it consists of a shallow chamber,ofiron,into which theliquid is led through pipes from a supply-tank having walls of thinner metal arising from the sides of the receiver, and extending up to a considerable 1 height above it. These sides have slots or openings to admit air, and shutters or valves are adjusted to these openings, so that the supply of air may be regulated at pleasure. Similar walls arise from the central portion of the receiver to about the same height with the outer walls, and when desired air is also admitted through this interior space to aid the combustion.

These slots are provided with doors or valves Gr, so hinged or attached at the upper edge that they may be opened or closed more or less to control and direct the air admitted through the slots to aid in the combustion.
The central portion of the pan A may have an opening, H, made through it, of ashape to conform approximately to the exterior Outline, although this is not absolutely essential. This apparatus I have designed especially for use in the combustion of a liquid fuel which I have invented, and for which'I have made a separate application for Letters Patent, and I have found that it produces a very perfoot combustion without the central air-pas sage, which may in many cases be dispensed with.
