To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN SCOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Willimantic, in the county of Vindham and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Governors for Steam-Engines, ater-Wheels, and other Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is so to improve the ordinary ballgovernor as to make it selfadjusting, more promptin action, and more efficient as an equalizer of the movement of the engine or water-wheel. It is shown in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved governor. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view of a part of a governor, showing the connection of my improvements therewith.
The same letters refer to the same parts throughout.
My invention consists of such additions, improvements, and assistants of the ordinary centrifugal or ball governor as shall make a very slight variation of the speed of the engine and produce a marked change in the sup ply of steam or water.
For this purpose a governor, A, of the ordinary construction, is supplied with a rod, (1, which, by means of the adjustable lever a a connects the same with the rods of the throttle or cut-off valves of the engine in the usual manner. The adjustable lever a a is made of two parts, one of which, a, is connected directly to the governor A, as shown, and the other, a fast to the axle H, operates the valves or cut-off movement a. By the relative posit-ion of the parts a a of the adjustable lever the action of the governor upon the valves is regulated.
The part'a is supplied with a worm-gear or segment, c into which engages a worm, (0, carried by the other part, a". The worm a is actuated by means of a self-adjusting train of gearing and shaft, (L The shaft c is made to slide freely through the gear which it rotates, so as to accommodate itself to the movement of the lever a The other end of the shaft a is connected by suitable gearingto a differential bevel-gear system, B, which is driven by means of the conical pulleys b Z) and their belt I) in such a manner that when the belt bis on those parts where the pulleys I) I) are of equal diameter, the movement of the gear I) in one direction is exactly compensated by the movement of the gear I) in the other direction, and "therefore the gears If b revolve idly be'twe'enthem.
When the belt I) is moved from its central position, so as to run from the larger part-of one conical pulley to the smaller .part'of the other, then the rate of the movement in one direction of the gear I) is different from that of the gear .b in the other direction, and the gears b If, accommodating themselves to "the changed relations of b and b, are carried bodily around the shaft concentric with'b b and by this movement cause the gear a and a to revolve, changing the relative position of the parts a a of the lever described, thus augmenting and accelerating the usual or natural action of the governor upon the valves, while the return of the belt b to the position of equal diameters on the cone-pulleys b b causes the differential-gear system to become again neutral and inoperative.
The position of the belt 1) upon the conical pulleys b b is governed by a fork or shipper, b lever b, and adjustable rod 1), which are actuated by the rising and falling movement of the governor corresponding to any change of its speed.
The power to rotate the conical pulleys b b is supplied by means of a pulley, C, and belt 0, which may be driven by a pulley upon the main shaft or any convenient part of the ma chinery. This belt csimply runs continuously without affecting the governor or valves, except as the belt b is changed in position by the action of the governor, as above described. The adjustable rod b which operates the lever 1), and thereby thefork If, is actuated by means of the sliding block D of the governor. The rod 1) passes through a bracket, which is secured to the sliding block D, and has a shoulder or head upon its upper part, so that as the sliding block is lifted by the actionof the governor the rod is drawn up and the lever and fork shift the belt upon'the conical pulleys, as described. By the adjustment of the an engine it needs no further care.
I no auxiliary governor of any kind; but I simaccelerating mechanism applied between the A in such a position that the slide D, in passlength of the rod b as by means of the nuts d dthe elevation at which the governor-balls will be carried may be changed and the regular running speed of the engine varied, as clesired.
A cover, d, is secured by a hinge or sliding joint to the sliding block D, and is held in such position as to overhang the end of the rod 1) when the engine is running, so that by means of it a falling movement of the governor-slide D will depress the rod b and operate the lever b and fork b in the reverse direction.
Thus whichever way the speed of the governor is varied it will have a corresponding effect through the rod 1) and its connections, including the gear systems and lever a/af, upon the valves, and when the speed of the governor returns to its proper rate it by the same means restores the belt b to its neutral posi-'' tion. Then the engine is stopped, the gove"nor balls will drop, carrying the slide-block D far below the limits of its working positions. This motion, iftransinitted by the rod b lever b, and fork I), would displace the belt b from the pulleys I) b. To prevent this and permit the slide D to fall without moving the belt I) more than is desirable, a double wedge or cam, E, is secured to the stationary frame of the governor ing it, causes the roll (1 upon the cover (I to strike the cam E, and the cover to be thereby thrown off from over the end of the rod 1), when the slide D may continue to fall, leaving the rod 1) and its connections in'working position; and an adjustable collar or cam, e, is provided upon the rod a, which in the falling movement of the governor-balls strikes the end of the lever b and causes the lever b to hold the belt I) upon that portion of the conepulleys where they are of equal diameter, so that the differential-gear system will be inoperative while the engine is stopping. \Vhen the sliding block D is again raised above the cam E, the cover cl is returned over the rod b ready for work. The cover dis also provided with a handle, (1 by means of which it can be operated by hand and the action of the cam Ebe dispensed with. This action of the cam E being automatic, when once the governor is adjusted to suit the regular duty required of It will be noted that I use in this invention ply increase the delicacy and eiiieiency of the lifting or centrifugal movement of the ordinaryball-governor by means ofaugmenting and governor and the valves, such mechanism being in itself incapable of regulating or affectingthe valves except as controlled by the governor, and such mechanism being supplied with extraneous power through the belt 0, or suitable gearing, and deriving its power I either from the main shaft of the engine, the
driving shaft of the governor, or any other continuously-rotating shaft, which may or may not be connected with the same engine that the governor regulates, as most convenient.
It will be seen that in this governor all of the gears are at all times engaged with their working mates, and no clutch or detent or abrupt stopping or starting movement of any kind is employed. All such movements cause excessive wear of the parts and a jar that is highly detrimental to delicate and eilicient regulating, while, on the other hand, the act of shifting the belt b upon the conical pulleys b b is noiseless and its action in changing the speed of the driven pulley and its train is gradual and without shock.
This governor is found very efiicient when used upon what are called cut-off engines,
as shown, and is also applicable to throttleengines, water-wheels, and other machinery where regularity of speed or power is de' sirable.
Having thus described the nature and uses of my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In agovernor for steam-engines, the combination ofthe differential gear I) b b, cone pulleys b, and belt I), shipper b lever I), and rod b with the governor A, gear a", rod a, the lever a a", carrying the worm a and segment wornrgear a", and the rod (1, when constructed and operated substantially as herein shown and set forth.
2. In a governor for steam-engines, the lever a, having a worm-gear, a", and arm a, having a worm, a, by means of which the relative angular position of a and a may be changed and held, in combination with the rod (1, operated by the governor, and the valveconnections a, substantially as and for the purposes herein shown and set forth.
3. In a governor for steam-engines, the rod 12 lever b", and fork h in combination with the sliding block D and cover (I, substantially as and for the purposes herein shown and set forth.
4. In a governor for steam-engines, the rod b lever b", sliding block D, and hinged cover (I, in combination with the cam E, adjustable collar 0, and rod a, when constructed and operated substantially as herein shown and set forth.
5. In a governor for steam'engines, the rod 1), in combination with the nuts d, lever b, fork b and the governor havinga sliding block, D, and cover (I, constructed and operated substantially as and for the purposes herein shown and set forth.
