This invention relates to display devices and more par-4 ticularly concerns display devices formed of sheet card-V board material which is eut and scored to provide a three dimensional structure having novel features.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved display device wherein sheet cardboard is cut and scored to form a series of prominent and attention arresting dia` mond shaped portions which lend themselves to a variety of unique display effects. I
Another object of this invention is to provide a display device of the character described, having diamond shaped surface portions which are individually framed and lend themselves to a number of variations in detailed structure and yrelative disposition so as to allow for a large number of selected display designs.
Other objects of this invention are in part obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.

Essentially, the display devices of the instant invention are formed of cut and scored sheet cardboard or other suitable material to provide diamond-shaped surface portions which alternate in forwardly projecting or rearwardly displaced positions; such diamond shaped surface portions presenting distinctive framed effects which are irnmedi'ately attention arresting.
Thus, as shown in FIGS. 1-6, a preferred embodiment lof the invention generally indicated at 10, is formed of sheet cardboard 11 of suitable gauge to provide requisite stiffness.
Cardboard 11 is cut and scored to provide parallel horizontal rows 12 of diamond shaped coplanar surface portions 13 with interposed laterally spaced diamond shaped portions 14 which are rearwardly displaced with respect tothe plane of portions 13. .A
To locate diamond shaped portions 14 in displaced relation to diamond shaped portions 13, the cardboard 11 is scored along upwardly and inwardly inclined lines 15 convergent to an apex 16, and along a second set of convergent lines 17 which are above and parallel to Alines 15, with an apex 18 immediately above apex 16, thus deiining 3,299,555 Patented Jaa. 24, 196i the upper portions of diamond shaped portins 14 by fold lines.
The lower portions of diamond shaped portions 14 are dened by downwardly and inwardly extending cut lines 19 convergent to an apex 20 vertically aligned with apex 16, the upper ends of cut lines 19 merging with the lower ends of score lines 15.
Diamond shaped portions 14 are further defined by a set of convergent score lines 21 which parallel cut lines 19 and have -an apex 22 lbel-ow apex 20 and vertically aligned therewith. Further, parallel, vertical cut lines 23 connect the vertical aligned outer ends of score lines 17, 21. The outer ends of score lines 15 and cut lines 19 meet at a mid portion of cut lines 23.
The score lines 15, 17 and 21 are located on the appropriate sides of cardboard 11, so diamond shaped portions 14 may be rearwardly displaced relative to the plane of diamond shaped portions 13 by folding along said score lines.
Upper marginal portions 24 between score lines 15, 17 and lower marginal portions 25 `between cut lines 19 and score lines 21, are thus angularly disposed so as to produce a distinctive diamond shaped frame for each of the diamond shaped portions 14.
The diamond shaped portions 13 which bound recessed diamond shaped portions 14, have their lateral apices meeting at vertically aligned apices 18, 22 while said vertically aligned portions 13 are separated by Iportions 26 lying between vertical cut lines 23, said separation portions 26 being coplanar with diamond shaped portions 13.
It is understood that the pattern of diamond shaped portions 13, 14 may be repeated horizontally and/or vertically in accordance with the desired overall dimensions of cardboard 11. As shown in FIG. l, the diamond shaped portions 14 have somewhat similar recessed halfsections 14A, 14B immediately below and above the same, and said half-sections 14A, 14B have apex portions in vertical register with apices 22, 18 respectively. Halfsections 14A, 14B are also dened by angularly disposed frame portions 24A, 24B defined by parallel score lines 27, 28.
The top and bottom horizontal edges 29 of cardboard 11, indicated in dot-dash lines, FIG. 1, are notched as at 30, where the lateral apex portions of diamond shaped portions 14A, 14B meet, thus allowing the base line 31 of portions 14A or 14B to assume a rearwardly disposed position in accordance with the recessed position of diamond shaped portions 14A or 14B, as indicated in solid lines. Thus device 10 may be positioned on a suitable base, not shown.
The device 10 is made curvable about a vertical axis to suit specific display usage. To this end, device 10 is provided with vertical fold lines 32, which pass through the vertical apices of diamond shaped portions 14, 14A, 14B, thereby allowing the lateral wing portions of display 10 to be curved rearwardly relative to the central portion of said device.
In an alternative form of the invention, indicated at 10A, FIG. 7, two horizontal rows 35 of recessed laterally spaced diamond shaped portions 36, 37, similar to diamond shaped portions 14, of FIG. l, have diamond shaped portions 38 bounding the same. In this case diamond shaped portions 36 have defining cut lines 39 converging upwardly to point 39A at the upper portion thereof while portions 37 have cut lines 40 converging downwardly to point 40A at the lower portion thereof. Otherwise, portions 36, 37 are in recessed diamond framed relation to diamond shaped portions 38, as pre' viously described. Lateral wing portions 41, 42 may y have tongue portions 43, 44 adapted to interengage when said display 10A is set up on a suitable base and curved to bringwing portions 41, 42 toward each other. Again, the number of portions 35, 36, 37 may be varied horizontally and vertically to suit the requirements of a particular display specification. The device A may have its top edge portion defined by V shaped cutouts 25A, while its lateral edges may be defined by lateral edges 38A of portions 38.
In FIG. 9 is shown still another modification 10B of the invention which is similar to device 10A, except that the cut lines 45 converge into an arcuate portion 46 to define the upper portions of the recessed diamond shaped portions 47, have arcuate lateral apex portions 48 and such cut lines extend for a very short distance, as at 48A, into the lower portions of diamond shaped portions 47. The upper score lines 49 and lower score lines 50 merge at laterally disposed, cut apex lines 51 of arcuate shape, thus giving a bevelled corner effect o the diamond shaped frame for diamond shaped portions 47 which are in recessed relation to diamond shaped surface portions 52.
FIGS. 10-12 show still another embodiment of the instant invention, generally indicated at 55. Display device 55 comprises horizontal rows 56, 57, 58 of diamond shaped portions 59, 60, 61 having their laterally disposed apices in immediate contact with each other, with intervening laterally spaced diamond shaped portions generally indicated at 62.
The portions 62 are formed by upper convergent score lines 63 forming an apex 64 and lower convergent score lines 65 forming an apex 66. A transverse, medial cut line 67 extending at opposite ends to the mid portions of short, vertical cut lines 68, allows upper section 69 and lower section 69A of portions 62 to be rearwardly displaced to bring the diamond shaped portions 59, 60, 61 into forward prominence.
The cardboard sheet from which device 55 is formed, may be cut to leave the outer lateral edges 70, of the outermost diamond shaped portions 59, 61, in outwardly projecting relation. Also, a generally triangular shaped head portion 71 may project upwardly from the upper, intermediate diamond shaped portion 60; the same being defined at its lower portions by convergent cut lines 72, 73.
L shaped wings 74, 75, secured on the rear of device 55, with hinged portions 76 having tongue and slot portions respectively, as at 77, 77A, serve to position device 55 on a base, not shown, and tongue 77 may be inserted into slot 77A to interlock wings 74, 75.
It is understood that devices 10A, 10B, 55 may also be provided with vertical fold lines 32, to allow the same to be curved about a vertical axis.
The devices 10, 10A, 10B and 55 provide diamond shaped portions thereof `forwardly and rearwardly to receive therein printed matter, coloring, pictorials and the like, to form a distinctive display device.
As various changes might be made in the embodiments of the invention herein disclosed without departing from the spirit thereof, it is under-stood that all matter shown or described herein shall be deemed illustrative and made by way of limitation except as set forth in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A display device formed from stifi" sheet material and comprising a first series of at least one horizontal row of diamond shaped portions, and a second series of at least one horizontal row of diamond shaped portions, the diamond shaped portions of said second series being interposed between the diamond shaped portions of said rst series, the diamond shaped portions of said first series being defined by score lines and cut lines arranged to allow said diamond shaped portions to be rearwardly displaced relative to the plane of the diamond shaped portions of said second series, each diamond shaped portion of said first series being defined by a pair of convergent cut lines extending from the lateral apices thereof to one vertical apex thereof.
2. A display device as in claim 1 wherein the pair of convergent cut lines define the upper portion of the diamond shaped portions of said first series.
3. A display device as in claim 1 wherein the pair of convergent cut lines define the upper portions of the diamond shaped portions of one horizontal row of said first series and the pair of convergent cut lines define the lower portions of the diamond shaped portions of another horizontal row of said first series.
4. A display device as in claim 1 wherein each diamond shaped portion of said first series is defined by upper and lower pairs of convergent score lines meeting :at vertically aligned apices, and a pair of convergent score lines having an apex portion and outer ends meeting the outer ends of said pair of cut lines, said score lines and cut lines providing intervening diamond shaped frame portions for each of the diamond shaped portions of said first series, said frame portions being angularly related to the plane of the second series of diamond shaped portions.
5. A display device formed from stiff sheet material and comprising a first series of at least one horizontal row of diamond shaped portions, and a second series of at least one horizontal row of diamond shaped portions, the diamond shaped portions of said second series being interposed between the diamond shaped portions of said first series, the diamond shaped portions of said first series being defined by a plurality of sets of score lines and a single set of cut lines, said sets of score lines and the single set of cut lines being disposed relative to each other to allow said diamond shaped portions to be rearwardly displaced relative to the plane of the diamond shaped portions of said second series.

A display device as in claim 5 wherein two of said sets of score lines are in diamond -formation and define boundary portions between diamond shaped portions of said first and second series; and a third set of said .score lines and the single set of cut lines define the diamond -shaped portions of said first series.
7. A display device as in claim 6 wherein said cut lines extend horizontally through the mid portion of the diamond shaped portions of said second series, and a pair of short cut lines extend vertically at the opposite ends of each of said horizontal cut lines whereby to convert the diamond shaped portions of said second series into depressible upper and lower sections.
8. A display device formed of sheet cardboard, said device comprising a first series of substantially coplanar diamond shaped portions and a second series of diamond shaped substantially coplanar portions, the diamond shaped portions in each series being arranged in horizontal rows with diamond shaped portions of one series in interposed offset relation to the diamond shaped portions of the other series; each of the diamond -shaped portions of said first series being defined by a diamond shaped frame portion formed by a plurality of pairs of score lines and a pair of cut lines in said sheet cardboard, one of said pairs of score lines and said pair of cut lines defining the inner edge portions of said diamond shaped frame portions, and second and third pairs of score lines defining the outer edge portions of said diamond shaped frame portions, said diamond shaped portions of said first series being depressible from the plane of the diamond shaped portions of said second series and the frame portions for each diamond shaped portion of said first series being angularly related to the planes of the diamond shaped portions of said first and second series.

A display device formed of sheet cardboard, said device comprising a first series of at least two horizontal rows of successive adjacent diamond shaped surface portions and a second series of at least one horizontal row of diamond shaped surface portions between said two rows of diamond shaped portions, the diamond shaped surface portions of said first series forming vertical rows of successive adjacent diamond shaped surface portions, each of the diamond shaped surface areas of said second series being defined by score lines at the boundary edges thereof and including a horizontal cut line extending toward the opposed lateral apices thereof and vertical cut lines at the opposite ends of said horizontal cut line which extend to the score lines thereof, whereby each of the diamond shaped surface portions of said second series may be rearwardly depressed relative to the plane of said sheet while the diamond shaped surface portions of said first series remain in the plane of said sheet.

A display device formed from stii sheet material and comprising a first series comprising at least two horizontal rows of succe-ssive, adjacent diamond shaped surface portions, and a second series comprising at least one horizontal row of diamond shaped surface portions located between the rows of said first series and in offset relation thereto, each of the diamond -shaped surface areas of one series having two pairs of convergent boundary edges respectively in common with an edge of adjacent diamond shaped surface portion of the other series, each of said boundary edges comprising a score line, each of the diamond shaped surface portions of said second series further including a pair of convergent score lines parallel to and disposed inwardly of one pair of the two pairs of convergent boundary score lines thereof, a pair of convergent cut lines parallel to and disposed inwardly of the other pair of the two pairs of convergent boundary score lines thereof and a pair of vertical score lines truncating the lateral apices thereof and adjacent thereto, said vertical score lines extending between the boundary score lines thereof whereby each of the diamond shaped surface portions of said second series may be rearwardly depressed relative to the plane of lthe diamond -shaped surface portions of said first series through folding action along said score lines and cut lines.

Claims (1)
1. A DISPLAY DEVICE FORMED FROM STIFF SHEET MATERIAL AND COMPRISING A FIRST SERIES OF AT LEAST ONE HORIZONTAL ROW OF DIAMOND SHAPED PORTIONS, AND A SECOND SERIES OF AT LEAST ONE HORIZONTAL ROW OF DIAMOND SHAPED PORTIONS, THE DIAMOND SHAPED PORTIONS OF SAID SECOND SERIES BEING INTERPOSED BETWEEN THE DIAMOND SHAPED PORTIONS OF SAID FIRST SERIES, THE DIAMOND SHAPED PORTION OF SAID FIRST SERIES BEING DEFINED BY SCORE LINES ANC CUT LINES ARRANGED TO ALLOW SAID DIAMOND SHAPED PORTIONS TO BE REARWARDLY DISPLACED RELATIVE TO THE PLANE OF THE DIAMOND SHAPED PORTIONS OF SAID SECOND SERIES, EACH DIAMOND SHAPED PORTION OF SAID FIRST SERIES BEING DEFINED BY A PAIR OF CONVERGENT CUT LINES EXTENDING FROM THE LATERAL APICES THEREOF TO ONE VERTICAL APEX THEREOF.
