(Cl. 249177) This invention relates to a spacing form and more particularly to a spacing form which may be inexpensively and easily formed and used in connection with defining a cavity in concrete poured about a bolt or the like or partially embedded therein.
The principal object of the invention is the provision of a simple and inexpensive spacing form.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a spacing form which may be customized at the time of use to fit the particular bolt or other object on which it is applied.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a cylindrical spacing form having apertured top and bottom portions registrable with a bolt or other object on which the spacing form is positioned.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a spacing form that may be inexpensively and quickly assembled at the point of use and applied to bolts or other members about which concrete is to be poured and wherein a desirable pocket or cavity is to be formed about the portion of the bolt or other object.
The spacing form disclosed herein comprises an improvement in the art relating to spacing forms particularly as applied to bolts which are customarily embedded head down in constructions of concrete so that mill machinery signs, posts and various other articles may be secured thereto with some degree of adjustability with respect to the position of the bolt relative to the concrete in which it is embedded. It has heretofore been the practice to hand form wooden members which were then positioned partially over the bolt to be embedded and held by suitable means attached thereto, usually through the addition of a wooden form spanning the area in which the concrete was to be poured, so that when the concrete was poured the bolt would be partially embedded therein and partially positioned in a pocket formed by the spacing form. These devices are expensive and time consuming and therefore objectionable.
The present invention proposes to substitute a simple, efficient tin can with apertures in its upper and lower ends of a size registerable with the threaded portion of the bolt on which it is to be positioned so that it can be practically self-positioning on the bolt by frictional engagement with the apertures thereof, and additionally it can be secured to a wooden form spanning the area in which the concrete is poured. More importantly, the invention makes possible the ready on-the-job formation of the spacing forms with apertures of various sizes, as the same can easily be performed or cut to the desired size in either an assembled, hollow tin can or the can itself can be formed on a machine as known in the art with the suitable top and bottom portions pre-apertured to desired size. In positioning such a device in the desired position on a bolt to be partially embedded in concrete, the spacing form is simply positioned on a bolt, secured to a structural crosspiece used to hold the bolt in proper position, and the concrete poured, whereupon the structural supporting member and the spacing form are removed leaving the bolt partially embedded in the concrete with a portion thereof positioned in a cavity in the concrete so that the bolt can be moved sufiiciently to accommodate the particular machinery which is to be bolted thereto.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of. construction hereinafter described and claimedyitheiug the' intention to cover all changes andmodifications of the example of the invention herein chosen for purposes of the disclosure, which do not constitute departures from the spirit and scope of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of the spacing form.
FIGURE 2 is a cross sectional elevation of a typical installation on a reduced scale as compared with FIGURE 1 and showing the spacing form in position about a bolt.
FIGURE 3 shows the completed concrete construction with the spacing form removed from its position about the bolt.
By referring to the drawings and FIGURE 1 in particular, it Will be seen that the spacing form comprises a cylindrical body 10 having top and bottom portions 11 and 12 respectively, each of which are apertured as at 13 and 14 respectively. Those skilled in the art will observe that the spacing form cylindrical body and its apertured top and bottom ends 11 and 12 resemble a tin can, and it can obviously be formed on tin can forming machinery which first forms the cylindrical open-end shape of the can from a flat blank and then rolls the ends thereinto forming the usual or customary chimes 15 and 16 respectively as seen in FIGURE 1 of the drawings.
It will occur to those skilled in the art that the upper and lower ends 11 and 12 may be solid, as in the case of a tin can, or they may be apertured with pre-determined sized circular openings to fit various sizes of bolts. When they are solid, the formed can is then punched centrally on its longitudinal axis and the desired opening formed therein as with a can opener or the like.
By referring to FIGURE 2 of the drawings, an example of the use of the spacing form seen in FIGURE 1 may be seen, and it will be observed that a concrete base 17 has been illustrated in cross section with a threaded bolt 18 positioned vertically therein with a head 19 of the bolt embedded well within the base 17 so that a portion of the threaded portion 18 of the bolt extends above the base 17.
A spacing form 10 is shown in position around the upper threaded portion of the bolt and positioned partly within the concrete base 17 and partially extending thereabove and secured to a wooden form or support member 20 as by toe nailing the same thereto by nails 21, 21. It will occur to those skilled in the art that the form or support 20 is apertured to receive the bolt 18 and that the spacing form 10 is secured thereto. It will also be observed that the spacing form is in the form heretofore described in connection with FIGURE 1 of the drawings, and includes a top 11 and a bottom 12 apertured at diameter comparable with that of the bolt 18 so that they fit snugly thereabout. The concrete base 17 is poured about the bolt 18 and the spacing form 10 and the same forms a pocket therein as may be seen by referring to FIGURE 3 of the drawings wherein the pocket is indicated by the numeral 22.
It will be seen that when the form or support 20 and the spacing form 10 have been removed as in FIGURE 3 of the drawings, the bolt 18 is positioned solidly embedded in the base 17 and extending vertically in the pocket 22 so that it can be moved from side to side sufiiciently to align with the openings in the particular pieces of equipment to be secured thereto.
It will be understood by those skilled in the art that once the equipment is bolted in position, the pocket 22 can be filled with concrete as the bolt 18 will then be in correct position and alignment.
It will thus be seen that a simple and efiicient spacing form has been disclosed which may be easily, quickly and 3 inexpensively formed on the job and applied to the usual forms used in holding the bolt in position While the concrete is poured so that the desired result is obtained.
It will thus be seen that a spacing form of improved construction, installation and operation has been disclosed, which meets the several objects of the invention and having thus described my invention, What I claim is:
The combination of an inverted bolt, the head of which is to be partially embedded in concrete, a spacing form on said bolt and a support member therefor, said spacing form consisting of a cylindrical hollow body member having apertured closed ends closely engaging said bolt inwardly from the ends thereof and fasteners attaching said cylindrical hollow body member to said support member in depending relation thereto.
