(Cl. 224-5) This invention relates generally to a holder for carrying a pipe on ones person and more particularly to a pipe holder provided with means thereon for carrying a plurality of pipe bowl sections in addition to the pipe itself.

Various pipe carrying containers have heretofore been available which generally consist of a pipe stem holding element sufliciently long to support a portion of the pipe stem therein and a carrying attachment buckle. These holders have been suitable for what may be termed a standard pipe. However, there are pipes commercially available which include a stem and lower bowl portion with removable bowl sections which are receivable into the lower bowl portion. This type of pipe permits the smoker to use a variety of bowls while purchasing only one stem.

The pipe holder of this invention is directed to this latter type of pipe and is designed to carry and store a number of removable bowls such that the user may carry a plurality of such bowls with him in a convenient storage package rather than carrying them loosely on his person. In the application of this holder the individual bowls are held in a manner which will prevent excessive jarring of the bowls while holding the bowls in a manner which makes them convenient to insert and extract from the holder.

This particular unit, besides providing a storage container for the bowls, provides the user with a place to store the assembled pipe or a single pipe stem without fear of loss of either the bowls or the stem.

It is therefore an object of applicants invention to provide a pipe carrying unit having a bowl carrying portion arranged therewith to provide a compact, handsome pipe holder and carrier.

It is a further object of applicants invention to provide a pipe holder or carrier having means associated therewith for storing a plurality of inter-changeable bowls for use with the pipe wherein the bowls are easily inserted or extracted from the bowl holder portion thereof.

It is a further object of applicants invention to provide a pipe carrying holder which may be provided with a removable multiple bowl carrying and Storing portion such that the unit may be used either as a single pipe carrier or as a combined pipe and bowl carrier.

It is yet another object of applicants invention to provide a multiple bowl container section for use with a pipe carrying container wherein the bowls are securely arranged to prevent undue jarring and therefore damage of the bowls.

These and other objects and advantages of my invention will more fully appear from the following description made in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein like reference characters refer to the same or similar parts throughout the several views, and in which:

FIG. 1 is a side elevation of the bowl and pipe holder embodying the concepts of this invention;

FIG. 2 is a front elevation taken from FIG. 1;

FIG. 3 is a bottom view taken from FIG. 2;

FIG. 4 is a horizontal section taken substantially along line 4-4 of FIG. 2;

FIG. 5 is a side elevation taken from the side opposite that of FIG. 1 and showing a modification of the unit;

FIG. 6 is a perspective illustration of the unit shown in FIG. 5 with a bowl holder detached from the pipe holder section.

As shown in the accompanying drawings the preferred embodiment of the invention as shown in FIGS. 1-4 is designed to hold a pipe stem S and attached bowl P along with a plurality of detached bowls B such that a complete smoking kit may be easily carried on ones person. The unit in the preferred form consists of two individual portions, a stem holder designated 11 and a bowl holder designated 12.

In the form shown the stem holder 11 consists of a longitudinal extending cylinder portion 13 having a pipe stem receiving passage 13a formed therethrough. Passage 13a is of course designed to be of proper longitudinal dimensions to securely hold the stern S therein and may be, as illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 2, slightly shorter than the actual stem S. As illustrated stern receiving passage 13a is provided by joining one end 14 of a piece of material through sewing stitches 15 or the like to an intermediate portion of the material.

To provide for conservation of material the bowl holder section 12 is formed from the same piece of material as the stem holder section 11 and extends from the stitching 15 to provide what may be termed a back 16 and therearound to provide a smoothly contoured bowl holding portion 17. The end 17a of the bowl holding portion 17 is in the form shown rejoined to the main body material through a resilient, stretchable, connecting fabric 18 attached to the free end 17a of the bowl holder material 17 through stitching 18a and extending therefrom to be joined at the other end of the stretchable material through the stitching 15. This stretchable piece of material permits the passage 19 for containing the bowls B to be of somewhat flexible dimension such that the bowls B will be securely held therein. The length of the bowl receiving section 12 may be substantially the same as the length of the stem receiving section 11 such that conservation of material again is obtained.

The unit as now described would then provide a pipe receiving section 11 having a bowl receiving section 12 adjacent thereto with the additional bowls B securely held within the bowl section 12 against longitudinal slipping. As the unit now consists it would be completely useable for its intended application,

As further improvements to this basic structure applicant provides a carrying element 20 consisting generally of a readily available S-shaped hook member 21 such that the unit may be hooked over an article of clothing and wherein the hook 21 is securely fastened to the holder by providing one of the ends 21a securely mounted to the unit by providing a bracer or backing portion 22 capturing the same by securing the backing portion 22 to the back 16 of the holder. Support backing 22 likewise adds a certain degree of longitudinal stability to the holder.

To insure that the bowls B will not accidentally slip from the bowl holder portion 12 the stretchable band 18 may be extended to partially enclose the bottom portion of passage 19 as illustrated and which extended portion is designated 23. By providing this additional length of material 23 from the same stretchable fabric as hand 18 it may be easily moved out of the way to let a bowl B slide therepast if sufiicient downward force is applied to the bowl.

A closure flap portion 24 for closing the top of the holder may be provided and to close such flap 24 a snap element 25 is provided at its lower end to snap and close onto a receiving snap element securely arranged intermediate the ends of the bowl receiving section 12. Although this flap 24 is illustrated as extending from the back portion 16 of the holder it could likewise extend from either side of the holder over to the other side where it would likewise be secured. This flap 24 of course holds the articles within the holder.

In the modification illustrated in FIGS. 5 and 6 the pipe stem receiving portion is designated 30 while the bowl receiving portion which is completely removable from the pipe portion is designated 31. In this structure the hook element 32 for attaching to a belt or other article of clothing is provided on the pipe receiving portion 30 and likewise the cover fiap 33 is provided on this same portion.

As illustrated in FIG. 5 this unit is complete in itself and may be used without the bowl containing section 31 and when used in this manner flap 33 would be attached to one of a plurality of attachment snaps 35 arranged on the stem receiving section 30. The attachment snaps 35 are likewise used with cooperating snaps 35a arranged on the bowl holder section 31 to permit the same to be removably attached to the pipe holder section 30.

Bowl holder section 31 in this form would again provide a tubular passage 36 to receive bowls therein which tubular passage 36 is formed from a piece of material 37 in combination with a piece of resilient, stretchable material 38 which acts in the same manner as the stretchable material 18 of the preferred form. Again a bottom stretchable member 38a may be provided to prevent the bowls from dropping through the passage 36 out of the bowl container 31.

The general idea of the bowl holder construction is to provide means for holding the bowls in secure relation such that they will not jar against each other and this could be accomplished in many ways, one of the simplest being a tight fit of material about the bowl periphery which would eliminate the flexible material portion or a more complicated form being an individual resilient container serving to provide the bowl receiving passage.

It should be obvious that applicant has provided a unique pipe and bowl holder structure which provides a very compact unit and which is useable either as a combined or singular unit. An avowed pipe smoker may for example with the modified form have a plurality of bowl sets, each set arranged in its own removable housing which he could easily attach to the pipe holder portion.

Various other features of this invention should be obvious and likewise the operation and use to which the holder is put should be obvious.

It will of course be understood that various changes may be made in the form, details, arrangements and proportion of parts without departing from the scope of my invention, which generally stated consists in the matter set forth in the appended claims.

What I claim is:

1. A pipe holder unit comprising:

(a) a pipe stem support member adapted to receive at least a portion of a pipe stem longitudinally therethrough, said support member having an open cross sectional area approximating the cross-sectional area f a pipe stem;

(b) means arranged on said pipe support member for attaching the same to an article of clothing;

(c) flap means arranged on said pipe support member for covering at least the open bowl portion of the pipe and normally preventing upward removal of the pipe but movable to permit removal of the pipe; and

(d) a holder for detached pipe bowls adapted for attachment to said pipe holder including a bowl receiving compartment in position to be covered by at least a portion of said flap.

2. The structure set forth in claim 1 wherein said bowl receiving compartment comprises a longitudinally extended open ended chamber of a diameter to hold pipe bowls against longitudinal slipping therethrough.

3. The structure set forth in claim 2 and resilient means along at least a longitudinal section of said chamber whereby the periphery of the chamber is in tension such that the diameter of the chamber will provide circumferential pressure to a bowl inserted therein.

4. The structure set forth in claim 3 and means closing at least a portion of the end of the chamber opposite the flap and to prevent pipe bowls from slipping from said chamber but movable to permit bowls to pass from said chamber.

5. A pipe and multiple bowl holder unit adapted to be attached to a persons clothing comprising:

(a) a pair of longitudinally extending conduits, one of said conduits being of a size to receive the stem of a pipe longitudinally therethrough, the other of said chambers having a cross section of sufficient diameter to permit a pipe bowl to be placed therein;

(b) means arranged on at least one of said conduits to permit the same to be attached to an article of clothing;

(c) flap means arranged on said bowl receiving conduit adjacent one end thereof to cover at least selected portions of the ends of at least one of said conduits to normally prevent upward removal of articles contained therein but movable to permit extraction of articles therein; and

(d) section of said bowl receiving conduit extending the longitudinal length of said bowl receiving conduit is provided with means for decreasing the normal diameter of said conduit when occupied to provide a pressure against pipe bowls within the conduit and prevent longitudinal slipping thereof of each bowl within the conduit.

Claims

5. A PIPE AND MULTIPLE BOWL HOLDER UNIT ADAPTED TO BE ATTACHED TO A PERSON''S CLOTHING COMPRISING: (A) A PAIR OF LONGITUDINALLY EXTENDING CONDUITS, ONE OF SAID CONDUITS BEING OF A SIZE TO RECEIVE THE STEM OF A PIPE LONGITUDINALLY THERETHROUGH, THE OTHER OF SAID CHAMBERS HAVING A CROSS SECTION OF SUFFICIENT DIAMETER TO PERMIT A PIPE BOWL TO BE PLACED THEREIN; (B) MEANS ARRANGED ON AT LEAST ONE OF SAID CONDUITS TO PERMIT THE SAME TO BE ATTACHED TO AN ARTICLE OF CLOTHING; (C) FLAP MEANS ARRANGED ON SAID BOL RECEIVING CONDUIT ADJACENT ONE END THEREOF TO COVER AT LEAST SELECTED PORTIONS OF THE ENDS OF AT LEAST ONE OF SAID CONDUITS TO NORMALLY PREVENT UPWARD REMOVAL OF ARTICLES CONTAINED THEREIN BUT MOVABLE TO PERMIT EXTRACTION OF ARTICLES THEREIN; AND (D) SECTION OF SAID BOWL RECEIVING CONDUIT EXTENDING THE LONGITUDINAL LENGTH OF SAID BOWL RECEIVING CONDUIT IS PROVIDED WITH MEANS FOR DECREASING THE NORMAL DIAMETER OF SAID CONDUIT WHEN OCCUPIED TO PROVIDE A PRESSURE AGAINST PIPE BOWLS WITHIN THE CONDUIT AND PREVENT LONGITUDINAL SLIPPING THEREOF OF EACH BOWL WITHIN THE CONDUIT.
