UNITED STATES PATENT EErcE.
MARGRET SMITH, or BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
HAT OR BONNET SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 328,729,dated October 20, 1885.
Application filed August 7, 1884.
. top plan view, the pins being closed. Fig. 3
is a sectional elevation of a tuck-comb with my invention applied, and Fig. l is plan view thereof.
My invention relates to devices to be worn on the head, and which serve to support the hat or bonnet in position and prevent it being blown off or otherwise accidentally displaced.
The device which I have invented may consist of a bandeau or comb, and is provided with pins of elastic material secured thereto in such a manner that when they are free they will assume a position projecting from the comb or bandeau by reason of their own elasticity, and when desired they can be held down close to the comb or bandeau out of the way. The holding down in this case is accomplished by means of a slide, which passes over the pins, and is limited in its movement by the central portion of the comb or bandeau, which may be formed thicker at that point, or have an ornamental addition, which will serve to prevent the slide from being run off the point of the pins.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A is an ordinary round comb or bandeau. It is provided with a central portion, a,which may be simply a thickened portion, or may be formed as an ornament thereto.
' B B are pins secured at b to the body A, and formed of elastic materialsuch, for instance, as tempered steel or brass or guttapercha. They are shaped and secured as shown, whereby they normally assume the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1, standing out from the comb or bandeau.
O is a slide which embraces the edge of the body of the comb and the pin 13. It serves, when slid along toward the point of the pin,
Serial No. 139,927. (No model.)
to bring it down against the comb or bandeau and hold it out of the way. It is prevented from running past the point of the pin by striking against the raised portion a. When the pins are thus held down, the device may be used as a comb or bandeau; but when the pins are raised or thrown out, by the withdrawal of the slide, the device becomes an effective support for the bonnet or hat, the pins serving as points upon which to impale the hat or bonnet, so that it cannot be displaced without dislodging and carrying with it the comb or bandeau.
The slide may move in a slot in the body A, instead of along the edge, if so desired.
Figs. 3 and 4 show this device as applied to tuck-combs for ladies. In these combs a metallic plate, E, is secured to the outer side of the comb, and is bent over at c and provided with notches at c. The needles F are pivoted at f, so that they may be set up, resting in the notches, as shown in full lines, or may be turned down when not used, and will be concealed by the bent edge e, which also serves as a spring to keep the needles in any position in which they may be placed. If desirable, the needles could be pivoted to the comb instead of to the plate, the plate always to conceal the otherwise unsightly needles. may be made fancy or plain, as can also the comb, the main object being to adapt tuckingcombs of any description to be used either simply as a comb or as a hat or bonnet supporter.
Having thus fully described my invention,
The metallic plate what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. A combined comb and hat or bonnetsupporter consisting of a tuck-comb provided on its back with hinged pins F, said pins being adapted to swing upward above the back and to be folded down behind the back, substantially as set forth.
2. In acombined tuck-comb and hat or bonnet supporter, the combination, with the combback, of the plate E, secured to the back ofthe comb, and hinged pins F, constructed to fold within said plate E, substantially as set forth.
3. In a combined tuck-comb and hat or bonnet supporter, the combinatiomwith the back of a tuck-comb, of the plate E, provided with the notched bent edge e, and the hinged pins In testimony that I claim the foregoing I F, substantially as set forth. have signed my name in presence of two wit- :0

bonnet supporting attachment for bandeaus or 5 combs, consisting of the plate E, provided MARGRET SMITH with an inward-projecting notched upper edge, Witnesses: and the pins F, hinged to said plate, substan- H. B. ZEVELY,
tially as set forth. S. BRASHEARS.
