RAZOR HAVING HAIR TRIMMING MEANS Filed June 21, 1965 IIIIIIII l' INVENTOR.
United States Patent Ofiiice 3,284,894 Patented Nov. 15, 1966 3,284,894 RAZOR HAVING HAIR TRIMMING MEANS Joseph J. Ryan, P.0. Box 474, Montclair, NJ. Filed June 21, 1965, Ser. No. 465,383 1 Claim. (Cl. 3029.5)
My invention is directed toward electric razors.
It is an object of my invention to provide a new and improved electric razor which can be used to trim the hair in exposed portions of ears of individuals, particularly men.
Another object is to provide a new and improved electric razor of the character indicated which can also be used to trim eyebrows as well.
Still another object is to provide a new and improved electric razor of the character indicated which can also be used to trim hair in nostrils of the nose.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of my invention will now be explained with reference both to this specification and to the drawings where- FIG. 1 is a perspective view of one form of my invention;
FIG. 2 is a cross sectional view through 2-2 of FIG- URE 1;
FIG. 3 is an exploded view of certain parts thereof;
FIG. 4 is a cross sectional view showing a modified form of razor head; and
FIG. 5 is an exploded view of certain parts in the modification of FIG. 4.
Referring now to FIGS. 13, there is shown a cylindrical hollow handle containing an electric motor 12, a vertical hollow cylindrically shaped tip 14, and a truncated hollow cone 16 connecting handle 10 to tip 14. Cone 16 carries an On-Oif switch 18 connected in series with motor 12 and power cord 20 in conventional manner. The top end of tip 14 is a hemisphere having a smooth continuous outer surface; the cylindrical surface of tip 14 contains perforations 22. A vertical shaft 24 extends axially within tip 14 and is connected by gearing means 25 to the vertical shaft 24 of motor 12. When the motor is turned on by plugging the cord in a suitable outlet and turning switch 18 on, shaft 24 rotates about its own axis. Shaft 24 contains two vertically displaced horizontal members 26 having slots 28 arranged to receive oppositely disposed vertical thin rectangularly shaped cutting blades 30. When shaft 24 rotates, blades 30 rotate also and cooperate with perforations 22 whereby the desired hair cutting or trimming action is carried out.
As shown in FIGURES 4 and 5, the top end of tip 14 need not be solid but can be hollow and also have perforations 22. The top ends of blades 30 can be contoured as shown at 40 to conform to the shape of the top end of the tip. Shaft 24 carries a transverse pin 52 disposed between horizontal members 26, and a free end of each arm 54 rests on top of pin 52, preventing the blades from sliding down the shaft. The arms 54 which are secured to each of the blades 30 at 56, functions to retain the said blades in the operative position in close adjacency to the hollow perforated tip 14; the pivotal connection that the said arms have with the blades will permit adjustments to allow for changes in dimensions due to the wear and tear or manufacturing tolerances, so that the blades will appropriately fit with respect to tip 14. Arms 54 can be adjusted by hand about pivots 56 to various relatively fixed angular positions. By changing the angular position of the arms, the position of the blades relative to the tip 14 can be adjusted to make a proper setting for the effective trimming.
While I have described my invention with particular reference to the drawings, my protection is to be limited only by the terms of the claim which follows.
I claim:
An electric razor comprising a hollow vertical cylindrical handle, a hollow vertical cylindrical tip of much smaller diameter, a truncated hollow cone connecting said handle to said tip, the cylindrical surface of said tip being perforated, a vertical rotatable shaft rotatably mounted within said tip in axial alignment therewith, cutting blades secured to said shaft, retaining means on said shaft adapted to removably and adjustably hold said cutting blades in close agency within the hollow tip, an electric motor in said handle, said motor having a vertical shaft gearing means interconnecting said shafts and coupling means to connect said motor to a source of electric power, to rotate said shafts whereby said cutting means rotate in close proximity with the hollow tip to cause cutting to occur at the perforations, wherein the said retaining means comprise a pair of axially displaced parallel members, each adapted to receive a cutting blade on either side of the shaft in planar alignment, in further combination with retainer means pivotally mounted on opposite sides of said blades, and having arm extensions adapted to engage oppositely protruding pins from the said shaft located between the said members.
