R. GIDLE-Y.
ENDLESS CHAIN RAILWAY CURVE. No. 328,210. 7 Patented Oct. 13, 1885.,
' ATTORNEYS N PEIERS. Phcku'Lfl-lw raphor. Washington. D. c
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT GIDLEY, OF WASHINGTON, NEW YORK.
ENDLESS-CHAlN-RAILWAY CURVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 328,210, dated October 13, 1885. l Application filed January 30, 1884. Renewed Ju ne 27, 1885. Serial No. 169,979. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT GIDLEY, of Washington, in the county of Dutchess, and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Endless Chain-Railway Curves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
Thisinvention has relation to improvements in cable railways; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims appended.
The main object of my invention is to p'r0- vide, in connection with means for driving the cable, a cheap and simple means for conveying the cable around curves in the line of track. This object I accomplish by the means shown and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a plan view showing the cable with both the idle and drive pulleys attached, the covering being partly broken away. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a view of a side elevation, partly broken away to show the operating mechanism. Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view.
Referring by letter to the said drawings, A indicates the frame or bed'for supporting the t rack, which may be of any approved construction, and arranged above or under ground, and at a suflicient height for the introduction of the operating mechanism, and a is a slot for the passage of the grip to the cable; but instead of this slot there may be a space the entire width of the track, to permit of the cable being gripped by the clutch.
At one end of the track or curved portionsuch as B-is arranged a circular series of studs or short vertical. posts, 0, which are respectively provided with an idle-pulley, D, grooved, as shown, to receive and support the cable (I. The opposite end or curved portion, E, of the track is provided with the drivepulleys, there being one arranged about midway of the curve F-such as eand one at each side thereof-such as f g-the whole being arranged somewhat at a triangle with relation to each other.
Arranged in a semicircle alternately with the drivepulleys e f g are idle-pulleys h, of a construction similar to those at the opposite curved portion of the track, for supporting the cable.
The drive pulley shafts are respectively provided with a horizontal fixed bevel gearwheel, G, and are connected together by means of the short horizontal shafts H and mitergears I, the shafts being supported in suitable bearings, i, to the frame or bed. One of the drive-pulley shafts may be of greater length than the other two, and provided at its lower end with a fixed bandwheel, L, by which motion may be received from any suitable mechanical motive power and imparted to the connecting-pulleys and the cable.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a cable railway, the combination, with the track having at its curve B the circular series of idle-pulleys, and at its curve F a circular series of alternate drive and idle pulleys, the cable, and means, substantially as described, for supporting the track and operating the drive-pulleys.
2. In a cable railway, the combination, with the circular series of drive and idle pulleys arranged as shown, of the drive-pulley shafts having the bevel-gears G, the horizontal shafts H, having the miter-gears I, bearings for sup porting the shafts, the band-wheel L, and the cable, all adapted to operate substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of 9c December, 1883.
ROBERT GIDLEY.
