CARPET-STRETCHER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 327,809, dated October 6, 1885.

To all whom it may concern/.-

Be it known that I, JEFFERSON MEAD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Windham in the county of Greene and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpet-Stretchers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in carpet-stretchers; and it consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective View. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view, and Fig. 3is a transverse section taken through the line :0 x of Fig. 2.

In the accompanying drawings, A represents a bar, which is provided with side pieces, a a, which are connected to each other by metallic cross-pieces b b, and at the end by a block, b.

Longitudinal side pieces, a a, of the bar A are provided with grooves or recesses c c, which extend on the inner side of the bars a from their ends to the block b.

The end (I of the bar A is rounded, as shown in Fig. 1, and adjacent thereto is secured a strap or flexible connection, D, to the opposite end of which is secured a board, B, as shown in Fig. 1.

To one side of the bar A, above the recess 0, is pivoted a spring-latch, O, which is provided near its central portion with an inwardly-proj ecting lug, 6, through which passes a pivot-pin, e. One end of the springlatch passes through a perforation, f, in the side a of the bar A, and said end is tapered or beveled, as shown in Fig. 2. Under the opposite end of the latch the side piece, a, is provided with a recess, 9, within which recess is placed a spiral spring, h, one end of which bears upon the latch, so as to throw said end outwardly.

Over said teeth, and to the under side and vertical edge of said cross-head, is secured a strip, I, of corrugated rubber, which forms an elastic cushion and prevents the carpet coming in contact with the sharp edges of the cross-head; and said rubber also serves to give the implement a firmer grasp, so as to prevent the same from slipping-over the carpet.

'The body of the sliding section B is provided on opposite sides with tongues 70 k, and above the tongues, on theside on which the latch C is located, is a series of recesses, f, which are beveled on one side, as shown in Fig 2, so as to allow the sliding section to be drawn outwardly without raising the latch.

The operation of my invention is as follows: When it is desired to stretch a carpet, the board B is placed vertically against the wall, and the edge of the carpet is placed over the pins 2', after which the sliding section is drawn outwardly as far as possible. The rounded end of the bar A is then placed against the upper edge of the board B and the stretcher forced downwardly, which movement will cause the opposite end to be pushed farther outwardly, and thus stretch the carpet.

I am aware that prior to my invention it was not broadly new to provide a carpetstretcher with extension arms or bars, and I do not claim this feature, broadly; but
