BUTTON.
SPECIFICATICNforming part of Letters Patent N0.32'7,768, dated October 6, 1885.
Application filed March 6, 1885.
To all whom it 11mg/ concern:
Be it known that I, LON PAUL OONARD, a citizen of the Republic of France, residing at London, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in cuff-buttons or the like; and it consists in the combination, with a button-head andahollow 1o or slotted shank secured thereto, of an elastic rod, a spring-supported cap formed on said rod, push-pieces in the button-head constructed to engage the spring-supported cap, and a leaf or leaves hinged to the shank and pivoted r 5 to the elastic rod. In the button-head are formed suitable guideways, the push-pieces tting in said guideways and extending out beyond the edge of the button-head, and the spring-supported cap extends into the buttonhead in position to be acted upon by the pushpieces. W'hen two leaves are used, the elasl tic rod is forked.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a vertical section of my improved button in the plane y y, Fig. 3, showing the leaves extended. Fig. 2 is an end elevation, with part broken away, showing the leaves folded. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a side elevation with the leaves 3o folded. Fig. 5 is a plan view with the top removed, showing the leaves extended. Fig. 6 is a detached elevation of thespring-supported cap and elastic rod.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
5 5 In the drawings, the letter A designates the button-head, to which is rigidly attached a slotted shank, B, which shank may, however, be made hollow or otherwise.
B is a forked elastic rod, on one end of which 4o is formed or secured a cap, O, which extends through a suitable aperture, a, into the button head A, in position to be acted upon by pushpieces D D, which slide in a suitable guideway, b, formed in the button-head, and extend out beyond the edge of the samcthrough apertures c c', formed therein. The cap C is supported upon a spiral spring, E, which surrounds the Serial No. 157,952. (No model.)
elastic forked rod B', and rests on suitable ledges, d d', formed on the lower end of shank B.
The button-head A is made hollow and of any suitable material, and, as shown in the drawings, the guideway b is formed by blocks f f secured therein, and that part ofthe push pieces D D which extends out beyond the edge of the button-head is not as wide as the remainder, whereby they are prevented from falling out.
The inner or adjacent ends of the slides D D are mounted or beveled on their under sides, and the opposite sides of the cap C are convex or beveled, to be acted upon by the adjacent ends of the slides in such manner that by pushing the slides inward the cap C will be depressed, and the leaves or shoes G G thereby brought parallel, or approximately so, as in Fig. 2.
The head is closed by a disk, F, which is secured, together with the blocks, to the buttonhead; or the blocks may be formed integral with the head and the same closed by a stone or disk, as before. Y
G G are the leaves, which are hinged to the lower end of the shank B at 7L h and t i, and pivoted to the prongs of the elastic forked rod B at l Z. If only one leaf is to be used, the same is hinged to the shank, as before, but the rod B is not forked.
Since the spring-supported cap rests upon a spring which acts continually against it, the normal position of the butt-on is as shown in Figs. l and 3, in which position the leaves are extended or brought into a plane parallel to the plane of the buttoirllead. If the button described is designed to be used as a cuff-but ton, and it is desired to apply the same to a cuff, the push-pieces are pressed inwardly and so held, whereby the springsupported cap is depressed, together with the forked rod attached or formed integral therewith, and the leaves are folded. The button can now beinserted into the button-holes, and on releasing the push-pieces the leaves are extended, and the button is held in place by the same.
If desired, the push-pieces may be inclined on both top and bottom, overlappingl each other at their ends, and also the spring-supported cap, whereby the cap will be depressed, as before, when the push-pieces are pressed inward.
What I claim us new, and desire to securc by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination', with abutton-head and a hollow or slotted shank secured thereto, of the elastic rod B, the spring-supported cap C, formed on or secured to said rod, the pushpieces D D' in the button-head, constructed to engage the spring-supported cap, and the leaf or leaves hinged to the shank and pivoted to the elastic rod, substantially as and for' the purpose speciiied.
2. The combination, with the button-head and the hollow or slotted shank secured thereto, of the gnideway b, formed in the button-head, the push-pieces D D', which iit in the guide way and extend out beyond the edge of the button-head, the forked elastic rod B, the spring-supported cap C, formed on or secured to said rod and extending into the buttonhead in position to be acted on by the pushpieces, the leaves hinged to the shank and pivoted to the elastic rod, andthe disk which closes the button-head, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination, with the button-head and the hollow or slotted shank secured thereto, ofthe guideway b, formed in the button-head, the push-pieces D D, which t the guideway and extend out beyond the edge of the buttonhead, the elastic rod, the springlsupportedcap C, formed on or secured to said rod, and extending into the button-head in position to be acted on by the push-pieces,and the leafhinged to the shank and pivoted to the elastic rod, Substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing` witnesses.
LEON PAUL coNARD.
