UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL E. CARROLL, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
FL-EX|BLE MATCH-LIGHTING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 327,656, dated October 6, 1885.
Application filed November 11, 1884. Serial No. 147,685. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DANIEL E. CARROLL, of New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lighting Devices, ofwhich thefollowing is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to pocket match-boxes for lighting cigars and other purposes. The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 represents a view in perspective of a match-lighter or device embodying my invention, showing the same as in the act of being used. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the same upon a larger scale, with the lid of the box thrown up or open; and Fig. 3, a perspective view of the parts of the box detaohed, with the tapematch in its place in one of the box sections.
The box is composed of two rimmed disks or half-boxes, A B, A being large enough to receive the rim ofthe other one,B,snugly within it.
C is the fulminatingtape or repeating-match, arranged in the form of a loose roll within the smaller shell or half-box B, and with its outer end adjusted to pass out through a cutaway portion or side opening, I), in the rim of said box-section, and through a correspondingly-arranged narrow opening, 0, in the rim of the boxsection A when the two boxsections are fitted together, a projection, d, on section B serving by its entry within a notch, e, in the other section to bring the two half-boxes or shells properly together, so that the openings 1) and c willbe inline or opposite each other.
The opening 0 in the half-box A is partly closed on one side by a loosened end portion of the interrupted rim, forming a spring or elastic guide, f, for the tape, and on the other side of said opening is a series of teeth, 9.
On the exterior of the rim of the outer half-box or shell, A, is a pivoted lid, h, arranged to shut down over the apertured portion in the rim of the box.
The flexible or repeating match 0 is made of suitably prepared paper, having a moderate degree of stiffness, in the form of a narrow g strip, studded on one side at distances apart corresponding to the length of a match with its phosphorus or igniting compound.
To use the lighter, hold the box formed by the two half-boxes or shells, fitted together as described, between the thumb and middle finger of the left hand, leaving the index-finger free, after which the operator should raise the lid h away from him, then take the end of the tape 0 between the thumb and finger of his right hand and pullstraight upon it in a slow manner, drawing the tape out from under the guide f and over or against the teeth 9, which will cause the igniting compound 6 at the end of a match-section as it is caught or rubbed by them to ignite. Then, or so soon as the flame reaches the top of the open lid h, the latter should be closed by the operator with a quick movement of the indexfinger of the left hand to extinguish or pre vent the flame from spreading to the remainder of the tape within the box, and a sudden side jerk be given with the right hand to the tape, which will cause the burning matchsection to be detached, and will leave the end of the next match-section projecting from the box, under its lid, ready for use when required.
The simple construction of the box provides for the rapidinsertion or removal of the fulminating-tape, and in case of the box being injured or broken the sectionally-formed tape-match may be taken from it and used separately on any suitable igniting surface, as a series of independent matches, and the damaged box be replaced by another at a mere nominal cost.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a repeating-match or tapelighting device, the combination, with the half-box section or shell B, having an opening, I), in its rim, and serving to carry the tape in the form of a loose roll, of the larger or receiving halfbox section A, having an opening, 0, in its rim and spring or pressure-guide f, and teeth g,arranged to ignite the tape as it passes from said opening, and the pivoted lid h, essentially as shown and described.
DANIEL E. CARROLL.
