'Ihis invention relates to improvements in paper trimming and piling apparatus.
The principal objects of this invention are:
First, to provide a paper trimming apparatus which will permit a single operator to `de-skid or separate individual trimmer load piles of paper from a stack of untrimmed sheets, deliver the piles separately to the trimmer, trim the piles and transfer the trimmed piles to a piler which will -accurately locate successive piles on a skid with the skids for the untrimmed stacks and the trimmed stacks being located initially on the floor adjacent to the trimmer for convenient handling by 4forked lifting trucks.
Second, to provide a paper trimmer positioned on a substantially elevated base with associated paper deskidding and piling apparatus operative upon stack supporting skids located at oor level.
Third, to provide a novel arrangement of paper handling apparatus in connection with a paper trimmer which materially reduces the amount of manual labor required for loading the trimmer and removing the trimmed paper .to an accurately formed stack of `the trimmed paper.
Other objects and `advantages of the invention will be apparent from a consideration of the following description and claims. The drawings, of which there are four sheets, illustrate a highly practical form of trimmer and paper handling apparatus and one modilied form of ythe invention.

The major elements of the invention include a paper trimmer 1 having a front Itable 2 with an elevated crossfbridge or beam 3 carrying a paper clamp 4 and trimming knife 5. The trimmer has a back or receiving table 6 which is adapted to have an air lm yformed thereon by ejecting `air under pressure through the plurality of small holes 7. The trimmer has a back guide 8 which is adjustable toward `and away from the knife 5 in parallel relation thereto. Controls for actuating the paper clamp and knife are indicated at 9 and an indicator for accurately measuring the distance from the lback guide to .the knife is driven by the loop band 10. The structure thus far described is standard in the paper manufacturing industry and so will not be described in greater detail and is conventionally illustrated.
It is a novel feature of the invention that instead of being mounted at floor level the trimmer 1 and its con- ICC nected parts are mounted on an elevated base 11 to raise the tables 2 and 6 between three to six feet above the level of the surrounding floor. A platform 12 is positioned along the front of the trimmer so that the operator may stand at the usual level with respect to the front table 2 and the controls for the trimmer. One advantage of the elevated trimmer is that a wheeled cart 13 of substantial capacity may be positioned alongside of the trimmer to receive the strip trimmings from the trimmer table through the chute 14.
The back guide 8 of the trimmer is provided with pile ejecting means consisting of air cylinders 15 having piston rod pile ejecting plungers, as shown at 17a in FIG. l, Ito push the trimmed pile forwardly off the front table 2. The cylinders 15 are selectively provided with air through the conduits 18 and v18a by means of controls to be described presently. The construction of the paper ejectors is more particularly disclosed and claimed in Patent No. 2,864,447 and so is not described or illustrated in greater detail.
The back table 6 of the trimmer is supplied with piles of paper to be trimmed by means of a de-skidding and loading table 19 which is positioned closely adjacent the side edge of the back of the trimmer table. The table 19 is of relatively heavy smooth faced material -to support the pile of paper to be trimmed and is in turn supported by the corner posts 20 so that the table is relatively thin and unobstructed on its understide. Rotatably mounted in suitable bearings 21 at the forward edge of the table and closely adjacent the side edges of the trimmer table is a shaft 22 having gears or sprockets 23 thereon. A similar but idling shaft 24 is supported at the opposite or rear edge of the xed table 19 and a plurality of spaced belts 25 are trained around the gears on the shafts with the upper reaches of the belts supported on the smooth surface of the table 19. Guide plates 26 bridge the space `between the adjacent edges of the back table 6 and the fixed loading table 19 between the belts 25. The belts 25 are toothed or `otherwise provided with a nonslip driving engagement with the shaft 21.
Positioned at the sides of the iiXed table 19 are four corner posts 27 supporting crossed shafts 28 and 29 in spaced relationship above the fixed table 19. The shafts 28 and 29 carry central sprockets 30 around which a chain loop 31 is trained and the chain is provided with spaced lugs 32. The shaft 28 carries a sprocket 33 on one side driving a chain 34 connected to the belt driving shaft 22 so that the upper reaches of the belts 25 advance toward the trimmer in timed relationship wi-th the advance of the upper reach of the chain loop 31. The structure of 4the fixed table 19 and forward belts 25 and drive chains 31 and 34 is a variation of the rdeskidding and trimmer loading apparatus disclosed and claimed more fully in the copending application for Paper Pile Separating and Stacking Transfer Apparatus, Serial No. 165,587, filed January l1, 1962, now Patent Number 3,146,897. The apparent differences between the present apparatus and that of the identified copending .application are that the table and `belts are elevated to -the level of the elevated trimmer and the drive chain 32 is elevated above the pile forwarding table.
One -of the posts 27 carries a platform 35 on which its mounted a motor 36. The motor drives through a chain 37 and one-way clutch 38 to the shaft 28 so that the belts 25 may be driven independently of the de-skidding apparatus to be described. Alternatively the one-way clutch 38 may be omitted permitting the motor 36 to be driven by the shaft 28.
The belts 25 and transfer table 19 are supplied with and pick up individual piles of paper from the top of a stack 39 of untrimmed paper assembled on a pallet or skid 40 (see FIG. 3) the skid is positioned on the floor at the rear or infeeding side of the transfer table 19 by any suitable mechanical handling device such as a fork lift truck. After being positioned on the floor a captive powered carriage 41 which may be a converted electrically driven fork lift truck advances to pick up the skid 40 and its stack 39. The drawings conventionally illustrate an electrically driven carriage 41 with a motor 42 supplied with power through the exible cable 43 from a fixed post 44 positioned alongside the path of movement of the carriage. The carriage is guided in forward and backward direction by guide bars 45 xed to the carriage and traveling in shallow grooves or tracks 46 in the floor. The upright slideway or frame 47 on the front of the carriage guidingly supports a fork slide 48 having lift forks 49 projecting forwardly therefrom. The power for raising and lowering the forks Iand fork slide is supplied and controlled through the cable 43, as will be described in greater detail presently.
Projecting forwardly from the truck at the top of the upright 47 is a boom 50 having a pivoted pawl 51 on its forward end which is positioned to'engage and advance the rst lug 32 on the chain loop 31. With particular reference to FIG. 3, it will be noted that the skid 40 and stack 39 can be elevated by the fork slide 48 until a trimmer load or pile 52 of the paper is just below and in clearing relation to the lower reaches of the belts 25. The operator stands at the rearmost extension 53 of the platform 12 and manually separates the trimmer load pile and inserts a stiff sheet or separator bar or blade 54 with an upturned outer edge opposed to the upwardly moving rear ends of the belts 25. A control box 55 (see FIGS. 1 and 2) mounted on the -post 27 at this position permits the operator to conveniently adjust the longitudinally advanced position of the carriage 41 and the vertical position of the fork lift slide 48. A telltale chain 56 depending from the boom 50 indicates when the top of the stack 39 is in correct position for separating a trimmer load pile from the top of the stack. The operator then actuates a switch to advance the carriage so that the pawl 51 engages a lug 32 to start rotating the belts 25 before they are engaged by the upturned edge of the separator blade 54. The advancing motion of the carriage 41 thus pushes the stack 39 under the transfer table while the belts 25 pick up and elevate the separator blade 54 and the trimmer load pile 52, as indicated by dotted lines at 52a in FIG. 3. Continued forward motion of the carriage progressively elevates the pile 52 separating it from the remaining stack 39 Without displacing individual sheets in either pile or stack. Since the pile 52 is moving up- -wardly slightly as well as longitudinally with the remaining stack 39 the driving ratio of the chain loop 31 and the gears 23 is in a proportion equal to the secant of an angle from the forward edge of the stack where it passes under the belts 25 to a point on the belt adjacent the upper periphery of the gears on the shaft 22. This is a very slight increase in lineal speed of the belts over the lineal speed of the carriage 41.
After the pile 52 is transferred to the table 19 by the belts 25 the carriage 41 is retracted behind the table 19 and the fork slide 48 and stack 39 may be immediately elevated to prepare a following pile load on the top of the stack. While the carriage is retracted the pawl 51 idles over the lugs 32 and no drive is imparted to the belts. However, the operator may actuate a switch at the con- -trol box 55 to energize the motor 36 and transfer the first pile 52 to the trimmerback table. The transfer to the trimmer can proceed concurrently while preparing a second pile for separation from the stack and delivery to the transfer belt. After the pile is trimmed to prescribed size the operator moves from in front the trimmer to adjacent `post 57 supporting a second control box 58. The post 57 together with an opposed post 59 at the opposite end of the platform 12 pivotally supports a bridge plate 60 which is in vertical position While the operator is operating the trimmer. A'pneumatic cylinder 61 p-ivoted to the post 59 at 62 is supplied with air through the conduit 63 (see FIG. 4) and function-s to extend its piston rod 64 to elevate the bridge plate 60 into substantially level paper receiving relation to the forward edge of the front table 2 of the trimmer. Simultaneously with elevation of the bridge plate to the dot-ted position 60a the plate 60 is provided with an air lm through the ports 65 and the operator actuates the ejector cylinder 15 to eject the trimmed pile of paper onto and across the bridge plate 60.
r[he bridge plate 60 delivers the trimmed pile of paper to a piling mechanism supported by four xed corner posts 66. The posts 66 have cable pulleys 67 at the top supporting and guiding lift cables 68 which lare connected to the corners of a horizontal open centered platform frame 69 having end cross pieces 70 and spaced side rails 71 and 72. Hourglass rollers 73 on the end members guide the frame in horizontal movement and lthe side members 71 and 72 support separate piler plates 74 and 75. The side plate 71 projects upwardly above the level of the piler plates and has a supporting ledge 76 on which the outer edges of the plates lie. The inner side member 72 also has a supporting ledge 76 and the edge of the plates 74 and 75 are provided with racks 77 engageable with gears 78 carried by shafts 179 on the side members 71 and 72. lSuitable motors 79 mounted on the side frame member 71 selectively actuate the racks to separate the plates 74 and 75. The plate 74 is arranged to be provided with an air lm surface through the conduit 80 While the plate v75 is selectively provided with an air lm through the conduit 81.
The cables 68 are wound and unwound simultaneously around drums 82 carried by the shaft 83 and driven by a motor 84 mounted on the bracket 85 at one corner of the piling apparatus. The paper piling apparatus including the vertically adjustable horizontal frame and the separating piler plates 74 and 75 is essentially the same as the piling apparatus disclosed and claimed more particularly in Patent No. 2,958,431 with the exception that the corner post supports and guides 66 for the frame are fixed and are higher so that the piler plates 74 and may be elevated into paper receiving relation to the edge of the bridge plate 60, as shown in dotted lines at 75a, in FIG. 4. By operation of suitable automatic or manual controls actuated from the control position 58 the operator can lower the frame 70 over a skid 86 positioned on the oor below the level of the platform 12 or toward the top of la trimmed stack 87 of paper. The frame 70 desirably carries an electric eye control 88 to automatically stop the downward motion of the frame and the piler plates in close proximity to the surface to receive the pile of paper and an up-limit switch 89 on one of the posts 66 may be connected to stop upward movement of the frame and the piler plates at the correct level to receive a trimmed pile from the bridge plate 60.
As stated previously, the structure of the trimmer 1, back guide 8 and ejectors 15-17, the de-skidding and trimmer loading table 19, and the piler frame 69 and plates 74 and 75 are more or less conventionally illustrated in view of detailed disclosures of similar structures in identified patents and applications. The ejector drive consisting of the air cylinders 15 in particular is an example only of one suitable drive. Racks on the rods 16 could be substituted and driven by a motor driven Shaft having pinions driving the rods. The invention claimed herein is the operational relationship of the elevated trimmer and ejector to the de-skidder table 19 and lift carriage 41, and to the swingable bridge plate 60, and the stationary location of the vertically reciprocable piler frame '69 and plates 74 and 75. The positioning of the -work platform 12 and extension 53 and the positioning of the control Iboxes or stations 55 and 58 as shown facil-itate the complete d'e-skidding, trimming and piling operation by one man `and the stacks of both untrimmed and trimmed sheets can be easily handled by powered trucks operating at floor level.
The controls for operating the various elements of the apparatus are shown in FIG. 5. These are examples only of suitable controls. As previously pointed out, the raising and lowering of the pilerA frame 69 and the motion of the piler tables 74 and 75 and the establishment 0f Iair films thereon may be sequentially automated as in Patent 2,958,431. A power source is indicated at 90-91 extending to the two control boxes 55 and 58. Switch 92 energizes carriage motor 42 to advance the carriage 41 and skid 40 toward and under the transfer table 19. Switch 93 reverses the operation. Switch 94 actuates the motor 95 in the carriage to wind in lift cable 96 and raise the fork slide 48 and stack 52. Switch 97 reverses the operation. If th'e carriage 41 were equipped with a hydraulic hoist the switches 94 and 97 could actuate valves to accomplish the same result. Switch 98 actuates the motor 36 to transfer a pile of paper from the belts 25 to the trimmer back table. This motor runs in one direction only.
At switch box or control station 58 switch `99 energizes two solenoids 100 and 101 to open valves 102 and 103. Valve 102 admits air to the conduit 63 and cylinder 61 to raise the bridge plate 60 while valve 103 admits air to the conduits 104 on the bridge plate to form the air `film through the ports 65. No attempt has been made to illustrate the source or piping for the air as this is believed to be Within the skill of persons familiar with air filmed tables. Switches 105 and 106 selectively actuate solenoids 107 and 108 to reversely position valve 109 to admit air pressure to conduits 18 and 18a for extending and retracting the trimmed pile ejectors 17. As previously noted, an electric drive could be substituted for the pneumatic drive ofthe ejectors.
Switch 110 actuates the motor 84 to lower the piler support frame 69 and the circuit through this switch has the electric eye control 88 in series therin. Swithch 111 actuates the motor `84 to raise the piler frame and this circuit has the up-limit switch 89 therein.
Switch 112 actuates the piler plate drive motor 79 for one piler plate 74 in one direction while switch 113 reverses the drive. These circuits may have limit switches 114 therein. A similar pair of switches 115 and 116 are connected to reversely actuate the piler plate drive motor for the other piler plate 75. Switches 117 and 118 actuate solenoids 119 and 120 respectively for opening valves 121 and 122 to admit air pressure through the conduits 80 and 81 to form air films on the tables 74 and 75 at the correct time in their opening movement and while the trimmed pile of paper is being manually located by the operator against the back rail 71 and a cross guide or stop 123 (see FIG. 1).
The modified arrangement of the trimmer loader and piler shown in FIGS. 7 and 8 employs essentially the same type of trimmer 1 except that the back guide 124 of the trimmer has no pile ejector on it. The trimmer is mounted in elevated position on a raised base 11 as before. An operators platform 125, which may be of indefinite width is positioned in front of the trimmer and has an extension 126 extended to adjacent the outer end of the fixed transfer table 19 and pile de-stacking belts 25 which are the same as in the first form of the invention. The untn'mmed pile separating and trimmer loading apparatus may be the same as in FIGS. l to 4 yand the parts thereof, including the captive de-skidding carriage and hoist, which are identified by the same reference numerals.
The modified assembly differs from the first assembly primarily in the position of the trimmed paper piler which is located at the side of the back table 6 of the trimmer 1, opposite from the fixed transfer table 19. The posts 127 support a vertically reciproca'ble open piler frame 128 essentially the same as the frame '69 by means of cables 68. The cables are Wound in and out on drums 82 by a motor 84 and piler plates 74 and 75 are reciprocated by motors 79 as before. The side frame member 129 projects above the piler plates as a guide stop and carries an adjustably located cross stop or guide 130 with a rearwardly curved end 131 projecting toward the side of the trimmer. The piler frame and plates operate aS before to lower a trimmed pile to the level of a handling or shipping skid 86 or the top of a partially formed stack on the skid and deposit the pile accurately on the skid or stack, the position of which is determined by the stop guide 71 and the cross guide 130.
In the modified assembly the piler is loaded from the side of the trimmer back table 6. If the posts 127 cannot be located -to position the side edges of the piler plates directly adjacent to the trimmer table, a fixed bridge plate 132 may be supported between the trimmer table and the piler plates as by brackets 133 secured to the Iinner posts 127. The bridge plate may be selectively air filmed by air pumped through the holes 134 as will be understood.
In order to transfer the trimmed pile from the trimmer to the piler, the back guide 124 is moved back to a position substantially in the plane of the cross guide 130. This is easily done by the power control for the back guide of the trimmer, and the -trimmed pile is pushed manually back until it is fiat against the back guide. An unloading or off-feeding transfer device is then actuated to push the trimmed pile off of the trimmer back table 6, across the Ibridge plate 132, if one is used, and onto the piler plates 74 and 75 and against the side stop rail 129 on the piler frame. The curved end 131 on the cross guide assists `in locating thel pile closely in the corner formed by the guide stops 129 and 130. The ltrimmer unloader and transfer mechanism consists of an elevated fixed frame support having a back member or beam 135 connected -between a back post 127 and fixed table supporting post 27 and a front member or beam 136 connected between front posts 27 and 127. Cross beams or members 137 connect the beams 135 and 136 well above the trimmer back table 6. Supporting slide rails 138 are connected to the cross beams 137 and have slideways 139 thereon that support an off-feed slide 140 consisting of slide bars 141 and connecting cross bars 142 and 142A. The cross bar 142A is off-set downwardly at 143 to clear a motor to be described. The slide bars 141 have racks 144 formed on their upper sides that are engaged and driven by pinions 145 on a shaft 146. The shaft 146 is reversibly driven `by a motor 147 carried by one of the cross bars 137.
The cross bar 142A has depending pivoted pusher bars or paddles 148 extending downwardly close to the back table 6 of the trimmer. The paddles tilt up as a pile is fed onto the trimmer table 6 but fall behind or beside the trimmed pile of paper as the pile is trimmed. After the operator trims the pile, he adjusts the back guide 124 to the proper aligned relation with the cross stop 130 on the piler, pushes the pile against the back guide and raises the piler frame until the piler plates are at the correct pile receiving level. He then actuates the motor 147 to advance the slide 140 and paddles 148 to the left to push the trimmed pile 4onto the piler plates and into the locating corner formed by the stop rails 129 and 130.
No controls for the several elements of the modified Itrimmer loader, unloader and piler are illustrated as it is believed that they can be provided by a skilled mechanic from the disclosure in FIGS. 1 to 5 and the patent mentioned above. The controls may be individually connected to the several moving parts or may be totally o1' partially automated as the user desires. The off-feed slide frame 140 and paddles 148 may retract over an infeeding pile of untrimmed paper being delivered to the trimmer by the de-skidding and transfer belts 25, or the slide may be retracted before or after the new pile is delivered to the trimmer.
What is claimed as new is:
1. Paper trimming and piling apparatus Comprising, a trimmer supported on a base elevated above the surrounding oor so that the table of the trimmer is between four and six feet above the floor,
said trimmer having a back table with a back guide adjustable thereacross,
said back guide having paper pile ejectors carried thereby and extensible from the forward face of the back guide to push a trimmed pile of paper off the forward edge of the trimmer table,
a bridge plate pivotally supported in spaced relation to the front edge of the'table of lthe trimmer, power third and fourth drive means connectedto independ ently reciprocate said piler plates,

power trneans connected to move said bridge plate from an idle unobstructing position relative to said trimmer table to a position in pile receiving relation to the front of said table,
a fixed table adjacent the side of said back table with an unobstructed space below said fixed table,
shafts rotatably supported at the ends of said fixed table and parallel to the side of said back table,
spaced belts trained around said shafts and drivingly engaged with one `of said shafts,
the top reaches of said belts being supported on said fixed table to transfer a pile of paper from said belts to said back table,
a chain supported on shafts adjacent said table and having drive lugs exposed along the chain,

7. Paper trimming and piling` apparatus comprising,
a trimmer supported on a base elevated above the `surrounding floor so that the table of the trimmer is several feet above the floor,
ysaid trimmer having a yback table with a back guide adjustable thereacross with a paper piler ejector extensible forwardly from the back guide to push a trimmed pile of paper oft the forward edge of the trimmer table,
a bridge plate pivotally supported at the front of the table of the trimmer,
power means connected to swing said bridge plate to a horizontal position in pile receiving relation to the front of said trimmer table,
power actuated means arranged to separate a trimmer load pile from a stack of untrimmed paper and to transfer the pile of paper to said back table,
a paper piler vertically reciprocably mounted adjacent said bridge plate and having a pair of piler plates horizontally reciprocably mounted relative to the rest of the piler,
means including control valves connected to selectively create an air film on said bridge .and piler plates,
means connected to raise and lower said piler,
an elevated operators platform positionedy between said trimmer and said piler and extending beyond said trimmer to adjacent said means to separate and transfer the untrimmed paper,
control means connected to actuate said bridge plate,
said ejector and said piler located adjacent the extension of said platform and the end of said bridge plate,
Iand controls for the power actuated means for separating and transfering a pile of paper located adjacent the extension of said platform and alongside of said separating means.
8. Paper trimming and piling apparatus comprising,
a trimmer supported on a base elevated above the -surrounding floor so that the table of the trimmer is several feet above the floor,
said trimmer having a back table with a back guide adjustable thereacross with a paper pile ejector extensible forwardly from the back guide to push a trimmed pile of paper olf the forward edge of the trimmer table,
a bridge plate movably supported at the front of the table of the trimmer,
power means connected to move said bridge plate from a remote position to adjacent position in pile receiving relation to the front of said trimmer table,
power actuated means arranged to separate a trimmer load pile from a stack of untrimmed paper and to transfer the pile of paper to said back table,
a paper piler vertically reciprocably mounted adjacent said bridge plate and having a pair of piler plates horizontally reciprocably mounted relative to the rest of the piler,
means including control valves connected to selectively create an air film on said bridge and piler plates,
means connected to raise and lower said piler,
an elevated operators platform positioned between said trimmer and said piler and extending beyond said trimmer to adjacent sa-id means to separate and transfer the untrimmed paper,
control means connected to actuate said bridge plate,
ysaid ejector and said piler located adjacent the extension of said platform and the end of said bridge plate,
and controls for the poweractuated means for separating and transferring a pile of paper located adjacent the extension of said platform in a position accessible to an operator standing beyond the pileV receiving position of said bridge plate.

the top reaches of said belts being supported on said fixed table to transfer a pile of paper from said belts to said back table,
a chain supported on yshafts adjacent said fixed table and having drive lugs exposed along the chain,
.a power driven carriage guided for lineal motion on the oor and having a hoist on its front end movable with the carriage between underlapped relation with said fixed table and retracted position therefrom and vertically movable from a lower position adjacent the iioor in front of said fixed table to elevated positions at a level below the lower reaches of said belts,
means forming an automatically enga-gea'ble drive connection on said carriage engageable with said chain on forward movement of said carriage to drive said chain,
lirst drive means connected betweensaid chain and one of said belt engaging shafts to drive the upper reaches of said belts toward said back table at a speed approximately the same as the speed of advancing motion of said carriage,
a first m-otor connected to said belts to drive the upper -reaohes thereof toward said back table independently of the drive by said carriage,
a paper piler vertically reciprocably mounted adjacent said bridge plate to receive a trimmed pile from said trimmer,
means connected to raise and lower said piler,
an elevated operators platform positioned between said trimmer and said piler and extending beyond said trimmer to adjacent said iiXed table,
control means connected to actuate said bridge plate,
said ejector and said piler located adjacent the extension of said platform and the end of said bridge plate,
and a control connected to actuate said carria-ge and hoist and a control for said `first motor located adjacent the extension of said platform and alongside of said fixed table.
10. Paper trimming and piling apparatus comprising,
a trimmer suported lon a base elevated above the surrounding floor so that the table of the trimmer is several feet above the floor,
said trimmer having a back table with a back guide adjustable thereacross with a paper pile ejector extensible forwardly from the back guide to push a trimmed pile of paper olf the forward edge of the trimmer table,
a bridge plate movably supported at the front of the table of the trimmer,
power means connected to move said bridge plate from a remote position to adjacent position in pile -receiving relation to the front of said trimmer table,
4a fixed table adjacent the side of said back table with an unobstructed space below said fixed table, shafts rotatably supported at the ends of said fixed table and parallel to the side of said b-ack table,
space belts trained arou-nd said shafts and drivingly engaged with one of sa-id shafts,
the top reaches of said belts being supported on said tixed table to transfer a pile of paper from said belts to said back table,
a chain supported on shafts adjacent said xed table Iand having drive lugs exposed along the chain,
a power driven carriage guided for lineal motion on the floor .and having a hoist on its frontend movable with the carriage between underlapped relation with said txed table and retracted position therefrom .and vertically movable from a lower position adjacent the lioor in front of said fixed table to elevated positions -at a level below the lower reaches of said belts,
means forming an automatically engageable drive con- -a rst motor connected to said belts to drive the upper reaches thereof toward said back table independently of the drive b-y said carriage,
i a paper piler vertically reciprocatbly mounted adjacent said bridge plate to receive a trimmed pile from said trimmer,
means connected to raise and lower said piler,
an elevated operator-s platform positioned between said trimmer Iand said piler and extending beyond said trimmer to adjacent said fixed table,
control means connected to actuable said bridge plate,
said ejector and said piler located adjacent the extension of said platform and the end of said bridge plate,
and a control connected to actuate said carriage and hoist .and a contr-ol for said first motor located adj-acent the extension of said platform and alongside of said xed table.E
'11.- Paper trimming and piling apparatus comprising,
a paper trimmer mounted in an elevated position so that its table is above the surrounding oor more than the height of Ia shipping stack of paper on a shipping and handling skid,
a narrow operators platform positioned in front of said trimmer and above the floor at a normal level relative to the trimmer table,
power actuated transfer means at one side of said trimmer arranged to life a stack of untrimmed paper Iand transfer a trimmer load pile from the top of the stack to the table of the trimmer,
ejector means arranged to push la trimmed pile of paper off of the Ifront edge of the trimmer table,
a vertically reciprocable piler positioned on the opposite side of said platform from said trimmer and movable from pileV receiving le-ver at the level of the trimmer table downwardly to deposit trimmed piles of paper on a handling s-kid or a partially formed stack of piles on theskid,
and a bridge plate movable from an unobstructing position relative to said platform to 'a bridging position across the platform in Iplie supporting and transfer position between the table of the trimmer .and the raised position of said piler.
12. Paper trimming and piling apparatus comprising,
a paper trimmer mounted in an elevated position so that its table is Iabove the surrounding floor more than the height of a shippin-g stack of paper on a shipping and handling skid,
an operators platform positioned in front of said trimmer and above the floor at .a normal level relative to the trimmer table,
power actuated transfer means at one side of said trimmer arranged to lift a stack of untrimmed paper and transfer a trimmer load pile yfrom the top of the stack to the table of the trimmer,
ejector means arranged to push a trimmed pile o-f paper off of an edge of the trimmer table,
and a horizontally fixed and vertically reciprocable piler positioned adjacent the opposite edge of the trimmer Ifrom .said ejector means .and movable from pile receiving level at the level -of the trimmer table downwardly to deposit trimmed piles of paper on a handling skid or a partially formed stock Iof piles on the skid.
13. Paper trimming and piling apparatus comprising,
a paper trimmer mounted in an elevated position so that its table is above the surrounding floor more than the height of a shipping stack of paper on a shipping and handling skid,
an operators platform positioned in front of said trimmer and above the floor at a normal level relative to the trimer table,
power actu-ated transfer means at one side of said trimmer arranged to lift a stack of untrimmed paper and transfer a trimmer load pile from the top of the stack to the table of the trimmer,
ejector means comprising pusher -means depending pivotally from a moveable support positioned above the back table of the trimmer and moveable transversely of the trimmer table to push a trimmed pile off of the opposite edge ofthe trimmer from the transfer means,
and a horizontally xed and vertically reciprocable piler positionesd adjacent the opposite edge of the trimmer from said transfer means to receive the trimmed pile from said trimmer table and moveable from pile receiving level at the level of the trimmer table downwardly to deposit trimed piles of paper on a handling skid or a partially yformed stock of piles on the skid.
14. Paper trimming and piling apparatus comprising,
a paper trimmer mounted in an elevated position so that its table is above the surrounding oor more than the height of a shipping stack of paper on a shipping and handling skid,
an operators platform positioned in front of said trimmer and above the iioor at a normal level relative to the trimer table,
power actuated transfer means at one side of said trimmer arranged to lift a stack of untrimrned paper yand transfer a trimmer load pile from the top of the stack to the table -of the trimmer,
ejector means comprising pusher means depending from a moveable ksupport positioned above the back table of the trimmer and moveable transversely of the trimmer table to push a trimmed pile off of the opposite edge of the trimmer from the transfer means,
and a horizontally fixed and vertically reciprocable piler positioned adjacent the opposite edge of the trimmer from said transfer means to receive the trimmed pile from .said trimmer table and moveable from pile receivin-g level at the level of the trimmer table downwardly to deposit trimmed piles of paper on a handling skid or a partially formed stock of piles on the skid, there being a fixed air iilmable bridge plate between the side edge of said trimmer table and said piler.
15. Paper trimming and piling apparatus comprising,
a paper trimmer mounted in an elevated position so `that its table is above the surrounding floor more than the height of a shipping .stack of paper on a shipping and handling skid,
an operators platform positioned in front of said trimmer and above the floor at a normal level relative to the trimmer table,
power actuated transfer means positioned adjacent an edge of said trimmer arranged to lift a stack of untrimmed paper and transfer a trimmer load pile from the top of the sta-ck to the table of the trimmer,
ejector means comprising pusher rneans positioned above the back table of the trimmer and moveable across the trimmer table to push a trimmed pile off of a different edge of the trimmer from the edge adjacent said transfer means,
and a horizontally fixed and vertically reciprocable piler positioned adjacent said different edge of the trimmer from said transfer means to receive the trimmed pile from said trimmer table and moveable from pile receiving level at the level of the trimmer table downwardly to deposit trimmed piles of paper on a handling skid or a partially formed stock of piles on the skid.
16. Paper trimming and piling apparatus comprising,
a paper trimmer having a table and mounted with the table in a position elevated above the surrounding oor lby a distance greater than the height of a shipping stack of paper on a shipping and handling skid,
an operators platform positioned in front of said table and above the floor at a normal operators level relative to the table,
power actuated transfer means positioned adjacent an edge of said table arranged to lift a stack of untrimmed paper and transfer a trimer load pile from the top of the stack to the table,
a bridge plate located at the front of said table and moveable from an inoperative position in unobstructing relation to said operators platform to a bridging position over said platform and in paper receiving relation to said table,
ejector means operative over said table to push a trimmed pile of paper olf of the lfront edge of said table and over said bridge plate in the bridging position of said plate,
horizontally reciprocable piler plates positioned adjacent the opposite edge of said bridge plate from said table to receive a trimmed pile of paper therefrom and movable away from each other to progressively release the trimmed pile therefrom,
means for supporting a shipping skid under said piler plates,
and means for relatively vertically moving said piler plates and said skid supporting means to locate a skid or the top of a partial stack of trimmed paper in closely vertically .spaced relation below said piler plates.
17. Paper trimming and piling apparatus comprising,
a paper trimmer having a table and mounted with the table in a position elevated above the surrounding oor by a distance greater than the height of a shipping stack of paper on a shipping and handling skid,
an operators platform positioned in front of said table and above the floor at a normal operators level relative to the table,
power actuated transfer means positioned adjacent an edge of said table arranged to lift a stack of untrimmed paper and transfer a trimmer load pile from the top of the stack to the table,
ejector means operative over said table to push a trimmed pile of paper olf another edge of said table,
horizontally reciprooable piler plates positioned adjacent said other edge of said table to receive a trimmed pile of paper therefrom and movable away from each other to progressively release the trimmed pile therefrom,
means for supporting a shipping skid under said piler plates,
and means for relatively vertically moving said piler plates and said skid supporting means to locate a skid or the top of a partial stack of trimmed paper in closely vertically spaced relation below said piler plates.

Claims (1)

11. PAPER TRIMMING AND PILING APPARATUS COMPRISING, A PAPER TRIMMER MOUNTED IN AN ELEVATED POSITION SO THAT ITS TABLE IS ABOVE THE SURROUNDING FLOOR MORE THAN THE HEIGHT OF A SHIPPING STACK OF PAPER ON A SHIPPING AND HANDLING SKID, A NARROW OPERATORS PLATFORM POSITIONED IN FRONT OF SAID TRIMMER AND ABOVE THE FLOOR AT A NORMAL LEVEL RELATIVE TO THE TRIMMER TABLE, POWER ACTUATED TRANSFER MEANS AT ONE SIDE OF SAID TRIMMER ARRANGED TO LIFT A STACK OF UNTRIMMED PAPER AND TRANSFER A TRIMMER LOAD PILE FROM THE TOP OF THE STACK OF THE TABLE OF THE TRIMMER, EJECTOR MEANS ARRNAGED TO PUSH A TRIMMED PILE OF PAPER OFF OF THE FRONT EDGE OF THE TRIMMER TABLE, A VERTICALLY RECIPROCABLE PILER POSITIONED ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF SAID PLATFORM FROM SAID TRIMMER AND MOVABLE FROM PILE RECEIVING LEVER AT THE LEVEL OF THE TRIMMER TABLE DOWNWARDLY TO DEPOSIT TRIMMED PILES OF PAPER ON A HANDLING SKID OR A PARTIALLY FORMED STACK OF PILES ON THE SKID, AND A BRIDGE PLATE MOVABLE FROM AN UNOBSTRUCTING POSITION RELATIVE TO SAID PLATFORM TO A BRIDGING POSITION ACROSS THE PLATFORM IN PILE SUPPORTING AND TRANSFER POSITION BETWEEN THE TABLE OF THE TRIMMER AND THE RAISED POSITION OF SAID PILER.
