Description

Sept 13, 1966 R. W. STEVENS 3,271,944
STRANDED WIRE STRUCTURES Filed May l, 1964 NVENTR. ROGER W. STEVENS ByM/QM Attorney United States Patent 3,271,944 STRANDED Wm STRUCTURES Roger W. Stevens, Woodbury, Conn., assigner to United States Steel Corporation, a corporation of New Jersey Filed May 1, 1964, Ser. No. 364,255 4 Claims. (Cl. 57-145) This invention relates to stranded wire structures and more particularly to stranded Wire structure `for use as hoisting ropes. Such ropes are subjected to abrasion and abuse and yet must be exible to enable them to pass Iaround sheaves and drums. Such ropes are Ialso subject to short peak loads which may break the rope, especially if the rope does not stretch or elongate readily under the peak load.
It is therefore an object of my invention to provide a stranded wire structure which has a flexible interior and large exterior Wires to make it abrasive and 'abuse resistant.
Another object is to provide such a stranded Wire structure which Wil-l elongate under peak loads.
These and lother objects will be more apparent after referring to the following speciiication and Vattached drawing, in which:
FIGU-RE 1 is an end view of a wire rope constructed according to my invention; and
FIGURE 2 is a view, similar to FIGURE 1, showing a second embodiment of my invention.
Referring more particularly to FIGURE 1 of the drawings, reference numeral 2 indicates an independent Wire rope core |which is surrounded by six strands 4. The independent wire rope core consists of a six Wire center strand 6 having six strands 8 of six Wires each stranded around the center strand 6. Other constructions of independent wire rope cores, such Ias 7 x 7 may also be used. Each of the `strands 4 consists of a center wire 18 with four Wires 12 of equal diameter stranded around the wire I10. Four Wires 14 of one diameter and four 'Wires 16 of a second `diameter smaller than the dia-meter of Wires 14 are stranded around the wires 12 with the smaller diameter Wires arranged alternately with the larger diameter Wires. Eight Wires -18 of equal diameter are stranded around the Wires 14 and r16.
In one particular embodiment, the core strand of the independent wire rope core is made rof a center Wire having a diameter of .040 in. surrounded by iive wires having a diameter of .048 in. and the outer strands each have a center Wire having a diameter of .O33 in. surrounded by five Wires having a diameter .of .040 in. The diameter of the independent Wire rope core is .360 in. -In this embodiment the vWires of the strand 4, like the Wires of the core 2, are m-a-de of steel with the diameter of Wire being .016 in., the diameter `of Wires 1-2 being .O35 in.,
ice
the diameter of wires 14 Abeing .048 in., the diameter of Wires 16 being .039 in. and the diameter of Wires 18 being .074 in.
The Wire rope of FIGURE 2 differs from that of FIG- UR'E 1 only by 'the substitution of 'a ber core 20 for the independent Wire rope core 2.
In each of rthe embodiments the rope may be regular lay, Lang lay or alternate lay.
While the two embodiments of my invention have been shown and described, it 'will be apparent that other ada-ptations and modifications may be mlade without departing from the scope of the following claims.
I claim:
1. A stranded wire structure comprising a center wire, four Wires of equal diameter stranded around said center Wire, eight Wires stranded around four Wires, four of said eight wires being of equal diameter and the other four of said eight wires being of an equal diameter smaller than the diameter of the first mentioned 'four Wires of said eight Wires, the smaller diameter Wires being `arranged alternately with the larger diameter Wires, andY eight wires of equal diameter stranded around said rst named eight wires.
2. A stranded Wire structure comprising a center core, and six strands stranded around said center core, each of said strands including a center wire, yfour Wires of equal diameter stranded around said center wire, eight Wires stranded around said four Wires, `four of said eight Wires being of equal diameter and the other four of said eight Wires being of an equal diameter smaller than the diameter of the tirst mentioned four wires of said eight wires, the smaller diameter Wires being arranged 'alternately with the larger diameter Wires, and eight Wires of equal diameter stranded |around said tirst named eight Wires.
3. A stranded Wire structure according to claim 2 in which said center core is a stranded wire structure comprising a six Wire center strand, and six strands of six Wires each stranded around said center strand.
4. A stranded Wire structure according to claim 2 in which said center core is fiber.
