APPARATUS FOR FILLING PACKAGES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 326,826, dated September 22, 1885.

Beit known that I, GHARLEs W. YOUNG, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Filling Packages, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention consists in a Vnovel construction of an apparatus for expeditiously and safely depositing crackers and other analogous frail articles in packages in which they are delivered to the market.

In the annexed drawings, Figure I is an isometric View of the packing apparatus in position for introducing the crackers into the package. Fig. II illustrates the operation of packing the crackers in the package; and Fig. III is a detached isometric view of the packing-tray, by means of which the crackers are introduced into the package.

Similar letters of reference indicate correspending parts.

A represents a bed-plate, and B B are two parallel walls rising from the bedplate and forming therewith atrough-shaped apparatus. The walls are beveled at the end, as shown at c in Fig. I of thedrawings, so as to allow them to enter the open end or mouth of the package, as represented by dotted lines.

A plate, D, is secured across the top of the base-plate A under the beveled ends of the walls B B', and under said plate is a recess, r, into which to insert one of the iaps of the package.

An extension, C, projecting from the end of the base-plate A, serves to support the package.

In order to adapt the aforesaid apparatus for packages of different sizes, I mount the wall Bmovably on the bed A, and provide the latter with slots s s, through which extend the bolts or set-screws (Zd, which pass vertically through the wall B', and are provided with nuts n, either on their upper or lower end, as may be desired. By loosening the set-screws the wall B can be shifted to conform to the size of the package to be iilled, and then clamped in position by tightening said screws.

end plate, b,- and if the crackers are to be packed in two or more tiers, one or more lon gitudinal partitions, c, are to be attached to the tray. The tray is thus open at one end, which feature is important to the operation of the apparatus, as will hereinafter become apparent.

In packing crackers I proceed as follows: I place the tray or holder H between the walls B B and on the bed A, with the end plate, b, of the trav toward the extension O, and fill the tray with crackers in regular order, as they are to lie in the package. I then open the two ends of the package and place one end against the end of the trough-shaped apparatus A B B by throwing two of the liaps of the packages on the outside of the beveled ends ofthe walls B B and inserting the bottom Hap into the recess r under the plate D, and while holding up with one hand the other flap I push with the other hand the tray H with its contents into the package. (Represented by dotted lines in Fig. I of the drawings.)

After the tray has entered its entire length in the package I withdraw the package, together with the tray and its contents, from the end of the apparatus A B B', and close that end of the-package into which the tray was entered, and then place the package erect on the said closed end and withdraw the tray from the opposite end of the package, as illustrated in Fig. II of the drawings. The open end of the tray being turned toward the bottom or closed end of the package allows the crackers to slide from the tray and remain in the package in the same order as they were placed on the tray, thus avoiding the danger of breaking or injuring the crackers. After the tray is withdrawn the upper end of the package can be closed, and then the package is complete.

By depriving the holder H of longitudinal side walls the interposition of such walls loetween the crackers and sides of the package is obviated, and the crackers are thus packed more compactly. It will be observed that the described holder H is practically of rectangular form in cross section, and therefore adapted t-o hold round as well as square crackers, and to pass the same into a package of corresponding rectangular form.

3. The packing apparatus consisting of a trough adapted to receive on its open end the mouth of the package to be filled and a tray sliding in said trough and adapted to contain in their requisite order the. substances to be packed, substantially as set forth and shown.

4. The packing apparatus consisting of the bed A, walls B B, having beveled ends e e, and the tray H, sliding between said walls, substantially as described and shown.
