, s. D. KING.
THE.
I WITNESSES JV'VEJV' 0R Nirn STATES SIMEON D. KING, OF ROLLING PRAIRIE, INDIANA.
PORTFOLIO.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 326,750, dated September 22, 1885.
Application filed July 11, 1885.
To all whom it may concern/.-
Beit known that LSIMEoN D. KING,a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Rolling Prairie, in the county of La Porte and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Assessors Cases; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which c Figure 1 is a perspective view ofmy improved portable desk and case, showing it closed. Fig. 2 is a similar View of the same open, and Fig. 3 is asectional view on line :20 :0, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention hasrelation to portable writing-desks and blank-holding cases; andit consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of a desk and blank-holding case especially adapted for the use of assessors, census takers, canvassers, or any other persons having to write in the open air or at places where a desk or table is not accessible, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates a board having a frame, 13, around its edges projecting at both sides of the board, which is rectangular and of the same size as the blanks desired to be held in the case. Two pairs of elastic bands, 0 O, are stretched across the frame near the ends of the same, and serve to retain the blanks, which are placed in the recesses formed at both sides of the board by the raised frame surrounding the board. A rectangular piece, D, of canvas, oil-cloth, leather, or other similar material is secured at its middle to one side piece of the frame, and forms two flaps, E E, which cover the recesses in the frame and protect the blanks contained in the recesses. The outer edges of these flaps are provided with straps F, having eyes G, which may be buttoned overknobs or buttons H upon thefside piece of theframe, and one of the side pieces of the frame is pro- (No model.)
vided with a handle, I, by means of which the contrivance may be easily and conveniently carried.
When the device is to be used, the flaps may be opened, when the blanks will be found contained in the recesses, where they will be continually kept in their regular order, as they were placed there, and the person using the device may now proceed to fill out the blanks, resting the desk against any object, the board giving him a level surface, and the blanks will be prevented from being blown away by the wind by the elastic straps confining theirends within the recesses in the frame. The raised frame surrounding the blanks will keep them straight, and will prevent the edges from be- 6 ing torn ragged or soiled, as well as it will confine the blanks when the deviecis carried from one place to another.
If desired, one or more of the sides of the frame may be recessed, so as to receive an inkbottle capable of being closed, pens, or other writing material, and the board, frame, and flaps may be of any suitable material, and be ornamented in any desired manner, according to the taste or fancy of the maker or user.
Having thus described myinvention,I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States In a portable writing-desk, the combination of a rectangularboard, a frame secured around the edges of the board and projecting at both sides of the board, elastic straps passing from two side pieces of the frame across both sides of the board near the ends, a rectangular piece of flexible material secured at its middle to one side of the frame, forming flaps covering the sides of the board, and having perforated straps at their free edges for buttoning on buttons upon the side of the frame, and a handle secured to one side ofthe frame, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SIMEON D. KING.
