(No Model.)
T. A. MAGAULAY.
MECHANICAL MOVEMENT.
Patented Sept. 22, 1885.

NITED STATES THOMAS A. MAOAULAY, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
MECHANICAL MOVEMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 326,573, dated September 22, 1885.
' Application filed May 27, 1884. Renewed August 17, 1885. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS A. MAOAULAY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Mechanical Movement, of which the following, with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is an end view. Fig. 3 is a detail view. Figs. 4. and 5 are detail views of equivalent construction. Figs. 6, 7, and 8 are modifications.
In Figs. 1 and 2 this movement isshown applied to a sewingmachine for operating the feed-bar. Ais the main shaft, having a crank, A. B B is the bed and arm of the machine. 0 C is a pitman-lever connected to the crank and pivoted to aradius-bar, D, about midway of its length by a pivot-pin, d, the radius-bar being pivoted to the frame B by pin 6. The pitman-lever is also connected with the rear end of a feed-operating bar, E, by a suitable ball-joint connection of usual construction. In a projection, F, is fitted'a disk, F, having a slot, at. The bar E is made flat on opposite sides and fitted into the slot at of the disk F, so as to allow a movement of the bar lengthwise of the slot. The bar E has a ball on its front end, and'is fitted into abearing in aprojection, H. It has a cam, I, for operating a feed-bar, J.
Rotary motion being imparted to the main shaft A, the crank A, with the radius-bar D, imparts a vertical and vibratory movement to the pitman-lever O O, and the bar E being connected with the pitman -1ever G C, it re ceives a vertical and lateral movement. In order to impart a rotary movement to the bar E it is fitted, as described, in a slot, a, in the disk F. The vertical and lateral motion of the bar E causes the disk F to rotate in the projection F, and by reason of the bar E being fitted into the slotted disk, as described, the bar E receives a rotary motion from the disk F. The bar E has now a compound vertical and vibratory and a rotary movement of equal time with the'main shaft A. The bar E, however, may have more than one rotary movement by having a pinion, E fixed to it and operating in the internal toothed wheel, F, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6. Since the vertical and vibratory movement of the bar E, at or near its connection with the pitman-lever,
is nearly 'a circle, any difference from a true circle may be compensated by a slight extra length of the teeth of the pinion or internal toothed wheel, and by forking the pitmanlever, as shown in Fig. 8, two bars, such as E, or two shafts, may be rotated, one receiving more than one rotary motion, as shown in Fig. 6, and the other receiving asingle rotary motion, as shown-in Fig. 1; or two bars or shafts, as E, may be rotated by the modification shown in Fig. 8; or, two shafts may each receive a single rotation from one of the main shaft A.
Instead of the slotted disk F, a crank, F and pin a? may be used to cause a rotary movement of the bar E, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5.
I do not limit the scope of my invention to the particular connecting device shown, having a vertical and vibratory movement, as other well-known devices may be used instead thereof, and other changes may be made within the scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, I claim 1. A mechanical movement comprising a rotary crank-shaft, a primary connecting device having a vertical and vibratory movement operatively connected with a secondary device, to which it imparts a vertical and lateral movement, and with devices in combination with said primary connecting device and crank-shaft, which causes a rotation in said secondary device, as and for the purpose specified.
2. A mechanical movement comprising a rotary crank-shaft, a primary connecting device having a vertical and vibratory movement directly connected with a secondary device having a rotary movement, and a slotted disk, as F, operatively connected thereto, and which rotates with said secondary device, as and for the purpose specified.
3. A mechanical movement comprising a rotary operating crank-shaft, a primary connecting device having a vertical and vibratory motion, and adapted to be connected to more than one secondary device, to which it imparts rotary motion, as and for the purpose specified.
4. A mechanical movement comprising a rotary operating crank-shaft, a primary con- I necting device havinga vertical and vibratory I lent, a bar, E, or equivalent. directly conmovementoperativelyconnected with asecondnected with the connection 0 C, and a. slotted 1o ary device, and intermediate devices adapted disk, as F, or equivalent, as and for the purto impart two or more rotations to said secondpose specified.
ary device to one rotation of said operating THOMAS A. MAGAULAY. crankshaft, as and for the purpose specified. Witnesses:
5. In combination, the crank shaft A A, MORTIMER J. ENNIS,
