UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J. BURNS BROW'N, OF NEWV YORK, N. Y.
MUSIC-DESK FOR PIANOS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 326,542, dated September 22,1885.
Application filed March 9, 1885.
- York and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Desk Attachment for Pianos, of which the following specification is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a music-desk for supporting the music-leaves of a piano'forte. This desk is intended more especially to be applied to upright piano-fortes and parlororgans, and is so constructed that when pushed back it is concealed beneath the cover and locks the latter in place.
The invention consists in the elements of improvement hereinafter more fully pointed out.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of an upright piano embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a partial bottom View of the top plate, showing the forward section swung up. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section through one of the guide-rails. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views of two forms of the guide-studs; and Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the connection between top plate and desk.
The letters I) I) represent, respectively, the rear and front section of the top plate of an upright piano-forte, A. The rear section, b, is permanently attached to the piano, while the front section, b, is hinged to rear section, b, so that it may be opened or closed.
To the bottom of the rear section, I), there are attached two grooved parallel guide-rails, D, and to the bottom of the front section, b, are attached two similar rails, I). These rails D D are in line with each other, and when the front section, b, is let down they form two continuous ways extending from the front to the rear of the entire top plate.
0 is the desk, made of square or other shape, and provided at its rear end with two laterally-projecting studs, E E, which engage and are adapted to slide within the grooved guiderails D D. n
WVhen the desk 0 is pushed back, it passes with its rear end through a slot of an upright partition, J, and thence enters a low chamber,
(No model.)
N, formed beneath the back plate, I). In this position the desk is concealed beneath the top plate and prevents the front section, b, from being opened.
\Vhen the desk G is pulled out, it assumes the position shown in Fig. 1that is to say, it projects forward and downward and rests upon the inclined front of the piano. G is a molding or bead secured to the front section, b, to the right and left of desk (J. extends in front of the ends of rails D D, and serves as a stop for preventing the studs E from being bodily drawn out of their guidegrooves.
To the forward edge of the desk 0, I prefer to secure a head, 0, corresponding in shape to head G. Then the desk is pushed back the head 0 will connect the two sections of bead G, and thus form one continuous bead from the right to the left edge of the piano.
If desired, the studs E may be made of the form shown in Fig. 5. In this figure they are shown to be able to slide in circular channels, in which they are held by means of a pin extending through a slot. A coiled spring is placed back of the stud. By pushing the stud E inward the desk 0 is detached from the top plate, I) b.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination of piano-forte A, having sectional top plate, I) b, with rails D D, desk C,having studs E, and with head or stop G, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of piano-forte A, having sectional top plate, b I), with rails D D, desk 0, having studs E, and with slotted partition J, all being so constructed that when desk 0 is pushed back the cover I) b is locked down, substantially as specified.
3. The combination of piano-forte A, having sectional top plate, I) b, with rails D D, desk 0, having studs E, and molding c, and with molding G and partition J, substantially as shown and described.
.J. BURNS BROWN.
