ATENT GANG-PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 326,534, dated September 15, 1885 Application tiled January 9, 1F85.
Io ject to provide means wherebya gang consisting ofany number of plows may be madecomplete in itself suitable to be attached to and carried by any pair of wagon or cart wheels, means whereby the plows may be attached to their supporting-frame, means for raising and lowering the gang, and means for canting the same from side to side.
To this end my invention consists in the construction and combination of parts forming a gang-plow hereinafterdescribed and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of a gangplow according to my invention attached to a pair of wheels, the wheel being absent from the near side in the drawings. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, showing both wheels. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section at xx, Fig. l, partly in rear elevation; and Fig. 4 is afront View of a pair of plows.
A represents a pair of wheels journaled on an axle, B, provided with a tongue, C, which latter may be attached to a pair of wagon hind wheels, if necessary'.
D is a thick strong plank provided with bolts E, by which to be attached to the axle B.
F is a post fitted to slide vertically iu a way, G, which is secured to the plank D by means of bolts H I.
J is the central plow-beam of the gang, securely bolted to the post F.
K L are two plows, both secured to one beam. In order that these plows may both be secured to one beam of common width, and yet be far enough apart to plow two distinct and separate furrows much wider than the plow-beam, Imake an offset in one plow-post, M, to the left, and in the other to the right, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, and I attach the plows to the sides of the beams by means of staplebolts N, so that each plow may be adjusted vertically relatively tothe others.
(No model.)
O O represent other plow-beams rigidly secured to the central beam, J, by means of crossbeams l), rigidly bolted together. To each of these side beams two plows may be attached in the same manner as to the central beam.
Q is an upper cross beam rigidly secured to the post F.
R B are brace-rods secured at one end to the central beam, J, and at the other end to the cross-beam F, thus stiffening the frame of the gang, so that it will support litself bodily in any position, whether mounted on wheels or 110D.
S is a hand-lever connected with the post F by a link, T, and pivoted to a bracket, U, which is secured to the xed plank D. By this means the gang may be raised orlowered by the operator at will.
a represents an arc of teeth cut into the i bracket U, to be engaged by a detent, b, attached to the hand-lever S, whereby the lever may be fixed at any point of its arc of motion to hold the gang of plows elevated, as desired.
In case the supporting-wheels A are light and the gang heavy, Iprovide acaster-wheel, c, with a post, d, pivoted to the rear end of one of the side beams, O, at e, to swing fore and aft. f is a rod connecting the caster-post d with an arm, g, of the lever S. The action of the lever in raising and lowering the whole gang relatively to the plank D also swings the caster-post to and fro correspondingly, so that the rear end of the gang is thereby supported at all times. thus relieving the wheels A of a4 portion ofthe weight of the gang, and facilitating the raising and lowering of the gang.
The bolts H and l, which secure the way G to the plank D, serve another purpose also. The bolt H is a pivot on which the way Gmay be canted, so as to cant the gang either to the right or left, and the bolts I serve as bindingscrews in circular slots of the way G to secure it at the desired cant. The clevis his attached directly to the forward end of the central plowbeam, so that the tongue of the wheels is not strained upon to draw the plows. I prefer that the staple-bolt Nshould straddle both the plow-beam and the plow-post, as shown.
The caster, pivoted to the free end of aplowbeam to swing fore and aft to adjust thehcight IOO guideway G, the post F, the beam J and plows' secured thereto, the cross -beam Q, and the 15 braces R, substantially as sh own and described.
3. The combination of the plank D,v the guideway G, the post F, thegang-plow secured thereto, the caster-whee1 c, the post d, pivoted to the rear end of' the gang-plow frame, the zo hand-lever S, pivoted toaxture of the plank D, the link T, and the connecting-rod f, substantially as shown and described.
