PRINTERS QUOIN.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 326,484, dated September 15,1885.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, J uLrUs BEINHARD DRonzEwsKI and JOHN MoCoNNELL, citizens of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printers Quoins; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.

Our invention relates to improvements in printers quoins.

The objects of our invention are to construct a printers quoin of three sections, the central of which is wedged-shaped, and the inner faces of the outer sections inclined sufficiently so that when the threesections of the quoin are placed together the outer surfaces of the side sections will be parallel. The upper edges of these sections are provided with notches adapted to receive alever or wrench for operating the same, one or more of the three sections being provided with a longitudinal slot, through which a rivet is secured in the countersunk openings in the two outside sections, so that the three sections of the quoin are thereby securely attached together. Other features of our in vention appear hereinafter in the specification and claims. We accomplish this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved quoin, together with the lever or wrench for operating the same in position thereon. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of one of the outside sections and the central section of the quoin, one of the outside sections beingleft off. Fig. 3 is a top View of our improved quoin. In Fig. 1,A represents a section of an ordinary printers chase B, the side-stick therein;

In the constructionof our improved quoin we make the central section, G, wedge-shaped, and the side sections, 0 O, inclined on their inner, faces toward one end thereof, substantially as shown in Fig. 3, the central of said sections 0 being preferably constructed with the taper or wedge thereof equal to the incline of both the side sections, 0 O. In the other direction the sections 0 Cand O are constructed substantially rectangular in shape. The central section, 0, is provided with a longitudinal slot, D, extending nearly the whole length thereof, as illustrated in Fig. 2. However, the sections 0 0 may be slotted instead, if desired.

The side sections, 0 O,preferabl y are provided with rivet-holes F F, countersunk, substantially as shown in Fig. 4, so that the rivet E will pass through the slot D and the rivet-holes F F, as illustrated in Figs. '3 and 4, to secure the three sections 0 O and 0 together, yet admit of the central section being moved upon the rivet sufficiently to spread the two side sections apart until the heads of the rivets engage with the shoulders on the inner portions of the rivet-holes F F, this rivet being loose in the holes F F, so that it will freely move back and forth therein.

The top edges of the sections 0 0 may be provided with notches c c, &c., and the central section, 0, with notches d d, &c., the notches 00, &c., being adapted to receive the projections on thelower end of the wrench or lever G used for operating the quoin, and the notches (l d, &c., on the central section, 0, adapted to receive the hinged dog g on the wrench or lever G used for operating the quoin, as illustrated in Fig. 1.

' The lever or wrench G is provided with a handle, H, one end of which has a hammershaped head, I. The opposite end of thehandle H is reduced in size, and is of suitable size and shape to adapt it to be used as a shooting-stick when desired.

In operating this quoin it will readily be seen that the sections 0 G and 0, being connected together by the rivet E, as hereinbefore described, are at all times prevented from being separated, so that no part of the quoin can be the principle of double wedges, and a very strong pressure can be secured therewith forcing the sections together, as hereinbefore described. To release t-he'quoin it is simply 'necessaryto reverse the lever or wrench G and force the central section back in the opposite direction from "that in which it was tightened.

Having th-us fully described our invention so-astoenable'others to construct and use the same,we do notbroadlyclaim a'prinflt'ers quoin consisting of three wedge -shaped sections adapted to be operated by a wrench or lever, as hereinbefore described; neither do we claim, broadly, a wrench'or lever adapted to operate the-same; but

WVhat we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the UnitedStates, is-- 1. The combination, in a printers quoin, of a central wedge-shaped section having a longit-udinal slot therein, with two side sections, the inner faces .whereof are inclined to fit the wedge-shaped 'central section, and having countersunk rivet-holes therein, substantially as shown,and a loose rivet passing through said countersunk-holes and said slot, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
