Description

(ModeL) H. O. CARTER.
WASH BOARD.
No. 326,400. Patented Sept. 15, 1885.
WITNESSES INVENTOR ATTORNEYS.-
EEicE.
PATENT HENRY o. CARTER, 0E MONTOLAIR, NEW JERsEY.
WASH-BOARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 326,400, dated September 15, 1885.
Application filed January 13, 1885.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY O. CARTER, of Montolair, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVash -B oards, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to wash-boards fitted with protectors that not only guard against the splashing of the suds up and onto the person of the operator, but also form a broad bearing-surface or rest for the body of the operator when stooping or leaning to the work; and it more particularly refers to that class of wash-board protectors which are removable from the board for the convenience of transportation and storage, and which in the case of a double or reversible Wash-boardthat is, a wash-board having corrugated zinc or other rubbing'surfaces on its opposite sides or faces are changeable to different sides of the board.
My invention consists in a combination, with the frame of the wash-board having sockets or holes, of a removable and reversible protector constructed to also form the upper cross-beam or guard of the board, and provided with pins or stems adapted to fit said sockets or holes, substantially as herein shown and described, and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this Specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 represents a Vertical partly-sectional edge view of a wash-board in part and a protector applied thereto in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is a partly-sectional and broken face View of the same.
A A indicate the legs of the wash-board, and B its head-board, arranged between the legs A A, and below which is the ordinary frame portion of the wash-boarchwhich carries the corrugated zinc or other rubbing-plates, that may be on opposite sides of the whole (Modeh) board, as usual in the case of double or reversible wash-boards.
E is the protector or protector-board, of suitable shape to perform its required functions. Said protector is constructed to extend over the upper ends of the legs A A of the board, as well as to the side of them, thereby dispensing with the usual fixed cross-beam or guard on the top of and connecting the oppositelegs of the board, thus virtually forming the upper cross-beam or guard of the board, as well as a protector. It is made to engage with the board, and is capable of being reversed to opposite sides of it, as required, as shown by full and dotted lines in Fig. 1, by providing-it on its under side with downwardly-projecting ins or'stems e, which, when the protector is fitted to its place, fit down within sockets or holesf, made in and down the upper end portions of the legs A A of the board, thus holding the removable and reversible protector steady.
If desired, the pins or stems 0, instead of being attached to the protector, might be attached to and be arranged to project from the upper ends of the legs of the wash board; but this modification will not be found as convenient as the construction and arrangement of parts shown in the drawings.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the frame of the wash-board, having sockets or holes f, of the removable and reversible protector E, constructed to also form the upper cross-beam or guard of the board, and provided with pins or tenons 6, adapted to fit said sockets or holes, essentially as shown and described.
HENRY G. CARTER.
