Description

(No Model.)
J. S. LONG.
SAW SET.
Patented Sept. 15, 1885 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN SHANNON LONG, OF MURPHYSBOROUGH, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JOSEPH BASTIEN, OF SAME PLACE.
SAW-SET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 326,305. dated September 15. 1885.
Application filed November 12, 1F84.
To @ZZ whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, JOHN SHANNON LONG, of Murphysborough, in the county of Jackson and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Saw-Set, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to certain improvements in my new saw-set shown and described in Letters Patent No. 292,755, which were granted to me January 29, 1884; and the invention consists, principally,in causing the hammer to automatically descend upon the anvil or saw-teeth held thereon prior to delivering its blow, so as to indicate to the operator the exact position on the anvil that the saw-tooth should be held to be effectively struck.
The invention also consists in providing the connecting-rod with a shoulder for elevating the hammer from the anvil after each blow; also,of a slotted wedge to be used with the saw -supporting screw for accurately setting the same; and, finally, the invention consists of the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification,
in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of' my new and improved saw-set, and Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the slotted wedge.
The base-plate A, anvil B, hammer C, spring D, and link E are of substantially the same construction as the like parts shown and described in the above-mentioned patent. The base-plate A is held upon the table F, that is supported upon the uprights G, which latter are also of the same construction as described in my said patent.
The spring-treadle H, cross-piece I, connecting-rod J, and spring-hook k are the same as in said patent, except that the connecting-rod J is held forward by the spring L, and is provided with aplate or projection, or formed with a shoulder, M, which, when the connecting-rod is raised by the action of the treadle-spring N, comes against the lower end of the link E and lifts the head of the hammer C slightly above the anvil B. This movement will be against the tension of spring D, so that the spring N (No model.)
should be slightly stronger than the spring D. The distance from the shoulder-M to the hook 7a of the plate K is slightly greater than the distance from the lower end of the link E to the notch c of the hammer C, so that when the treadle H is pressed downward the shoulder M will leave the link E before the hook 7c engages with the notch c. During the interval the springD will act to lower the head of the hammer C to the anvil or sawtooth held thereon, thus indicating exactly where the blow will be struck, so that the operator can hold the saw-tooth accordingly, thus insuring a square and effective blow upon the tooth.
O is the screw-support for the saw. This is screwed into the bed-plate A, and has the slotted wedge P placed upon it, which wedge may be moved either way, so that it will show at a glance what the set tothe saw-teeth will be.
The screw O will be turned down upon the wedge, and the wedge thus serves also to prevent the screw from being turned by the saw resting upon it.
The guide-plate Q and adjusting-screw R are of the same construction as described in my above-mentioned patent.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The hammer C, connected to the spring D, in combination with a plate or shoulder, M, for lifting the hammer and permitting it to be lowered upon the anvil o1 saw-teeth before each blow, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The rod J, attached to spring-treadle H, formed with shoulder M, and provided with hook k, in combination with hammer C, notched at c, link E, and spring D, the distance from hook 7c to shoulder M being greater than the distance from notch c to the lower end of link E, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The combination,in a saw-set, with the screw O, of the wedge P, placed upon the screw, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
