ARTISTS PALETTE' 0UP; No.325,872. Patented Sept.8, 18 85.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HAROLD sEEEELL, 0E PLAINFIELD, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR 'ro NEWMAN E. MONTROSS, OF NEW YORK, n. Y.
ARTISTS PALETTE -CU P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,872, dated September 8, 1885.
13, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HAROLD SEREELL, of Plainfield, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Artists Palette-Cups, and the following is declared to be a description of the same.
Artists palette-cups are generally held upon the palette by a clip on the under side of the cup, and these cups are usually made with an open mouth and straight or tapering sides, and the oil or other liquid placed therein is very liable to be spilled as the artist moves his palette, and it oil is left in the cup for a time exposed to the air it thickens and becomes unfit for use.
- The object of my invention is to prevent the aforesaid difiiculties by providing a cup from which the oil will not spill, and which cup can be closed by a cover to which is connected a flexible packing, which cover, when shut down, is held by said packing to place and an air-tight joint is formed. I employ a sheetmetal cup of elliptical section, to the bottom of which the connecting-clip is secured, and said cup has an opening in the top and athiekened edge to the opening. -A cover of sheet metal is hinged to the upper surface of the elliptical cup. and said cover has a flexible packing, preferably of rubber, connected with it,which when closed seals the cup and prevents the evaporation of the contents.
In the drawings, Figure l is an elevation of the cup with the cover thrown back, and Fig, 2 is a cross-section of the same with the cover closed.
The elliptical sheet-metal cup is made of two parts, a b, soldered together at 1, and to the under side of the lower part, a, the clip a is soldered by which the cup is held upon the 4.0 palette. The upper part, b, has a central opening for access, and said opening is made with a thickened edge, 2, preferably by a wire soldered around the edge.
The cover (1 is hinged at 3 to theupper 5 part, b, in any desired manner, and upon the under side of the cover-plate the packinge, of flexible material, is placed, and held by a plate or ring of metal, f. This packing e is preferably of rubber, and may be in the form of a flat or round ring or disk, and can be secured or held upon the cover by a plate or ring.
The elliptical form of the cup prevents the oil spilling when the cup is considerably tipped, and the cover and flexible packing form a seal and air-tight joint when the cover is closed, which prevents the evaporation of the oil or other liquid contained in the cup.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, with an elliptical- 6o shaped cup and clip for connecting said cup to the palette, of a cover hinged to the upper part of the cup, and a flexible packing fcionnected to said cover, substantially as speci- 2. The combination, in a palette-cup, with the two-part elliptical-cup a b and clip 0, of
the cover d, hinged at 3, a packing, 6, formed of a ring or disk of rubber or other flexible material, and a plate or ring of metal, f, for securing said packing to the cover, substantially as set forth.
Signed by me this 8th day of April, A. D. 1885.
HAROLD SERRELL. Witnesses:
