SPECIFICATION ormingrpart of Letters Patent No. 325,838, dated September 8, 1885.
\ Application lcd October 9` 18"@4. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom t mayconcerm r Beit known that I, FREDERICK DWITT HILL, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Burglar-Alarms for Windows,
of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of thisspecification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a side elevation of one of my improved burglar-alarms, part being broken away, shown as applied to a window, the window-sashes being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, partly in section, through the line x Fig. l, the upper sash and casing of the window being shown in section through the line x x', Fig. l.
The object of this invention is to facilitate the attachment of burglar-alarms to windows and promote reliability in the operation of such alarms.
The invention relates to a burglar-alarm for windows, constructed with an angular plate carrying a clock-work provided with a bell, and having an arm on its escapement-post to engage with a pin attached to a pivoted lever connected by a rod and a band and pulleys with a roller, whereby amovement of the windowsash can be made to spring the alarm. The angular plate carrying the operating mechanism is provided with a flange, with which is connected a clamp, whereby the said alarm can be readily secured to awindow-sash, as will be hereinafter fully described.
A represents the casing, B the upper sash, and O the lower sash, of an ordinary window.
D is an angular plate, upon the lower edge of the upper arm of which is formed a laterally-projecting fiange, E.
To the iiange E are secured two plates, F G. The plate F is secured to the ange E by a rivet, H, and its outer end is bent downward to grasp the rear edge of the top rail of the lower sash, C. v
The inner end of the plate F is bent upward, and has a screw, I, rigidly attached to it. The plate G is slotted to receive the screw J, that clamps it to the flange E, so that the said plate can be moved to adjust it to the thickness of the top rail of the lower sash, C, and to clamp and release the said rail. The outer end ofthe plate G is bent downward to grasp the forward' edge of the top rail of the lower sash, C, and its inner end is bent upward, and has an aperture formed through it for thepassage of the screw I.` The -plate G is drawn toward the plate F to clamp the top rail of the lower sash,C, by means of a hand-nut, K, screwed upon the screw I.
To thelower arm of the plate D is attached a clock-work, L, to the escapement-post IVI of which'is attached an arm, N, and the bellhammer O.
The arm N projects into such a position as to engage with, a pin, P, attached to the end of an elbow-lever, Q, which is pivoted at its angle to the lower part of the plate D. To the other end of the lever Q is attached one end of a rod, R, the other end of which is pivoted to a crank-pin, S, attached to the pulley T. The pulley Tis pivoted to the plate D at its angle, and around the said pulley passes an endless belt, U, which also passes around a pulley, V, formed upon or attached to the roller W. Theroller W is pivoted to the end of the upper arm of the angular plate D in such a position that the face of the said roller will project so far as to come ini contact with the side rail of the upper. s ash, B, as illustrated inFigs. -1v and 2s`o as to be turned by the friction of the said sash when moved from the position it had when the alarmwas set.
Vith this construction, when the alarm has been attached to the sashl Gand the sashes B C arranged in the desired position, either closed or partly open, the pulleys T V are turned to bring the lever Q into a position that the arm N of the escapement-post M will strike against the pin l? of the said lever and hold the clock-work Lfrom operating. When thus arranged, if either sash be moved in either 'I OO 1. Aburglaralarmcomprisinganattachingplate, a securing-clamp thereon constructed to engage the top rail ofa sash, a bell, ahammer for striking the same, a friction-roller adapted to be operated by the movement of the article to which the alarm is secured, and connections between the friction-roller and the bell-ringing mechanism, substantially as set forth.
2. In a burglar-alarm for Windows, the con1- bination, with the angular plate D and a clockwork, L, having an arm, N, attached to its escapement-post M, ofthe lever Q,having a projecting pin, I?, the c0nnecting-rod R, the pulleys and band I V U, and the roller W,
