SPECIFiCATION forming part of Letters Application filed March 1I, 1885.
Patent No. 325,199, dated August 25, 1885.
(No molel.)
To @ZZ whom it ill/dy concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. DoREMUs, aresident of Flatbush, in the count5v of Kings and State oi` New York, have invented a new and uset'ul Improvement in Checks, Drafts,
and other Money-Orders, ot' which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
teference is to be had to the accompanying i drawings, forming a part of this speciiication, in which similar letters ot reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figuie 1 is a plan view ot' one of my improved checks shown in blank. Fig. 2 's a plan viiw ofthe same shown as tilted ut.
'lhe object of this invention is to provide blank checks, dra't'ts7 and other money-orders prepared in such a nranner that when prop crly tilled out the)v cannot be readily raised or made to represent a larger sum than that lor which they were drawn.
lhc il.vention relatts to a check, dia-It, or other nn hey-order mai'e with spaces to receive the name ot' the place and the date, the name ofthe dr.. wee and the order, and the name ot' the payre, with a space containing groups of three of tach oi' the digits, with two or more s, aces to receive a statement of the sum in words, with spaces to receive the signature of the drawer, and with two sits of spaces corresponding theren ith, the cnc set containing the names ot' the various f lenoniinations and the other set to receive numerals representing the amounts ci the said various denominations and ciphers, as will be hereinalter full)1 described and then claimed.
The check is prepared with a space, A, i'or the name ol" the place where and the date when the said check drawn, a space, B, to p receive the name of the drawee, and a space, U, to receive the order and the name of the Ielow the spaces A B C is a space, y D, which is divided by short vertical lilies payee.
into twenty-seven sections, in each ofthe first three oi' which is placed the ligure l, in each ot' the second three is placed the iigure 2, and
so on through the nine digits. The three spaces of each group correspond with the units, tens, hundreds ot' the system of notation, and may be distinguished by dii'erent colorsas, i`or instance, red, white, and blueto catch the eve, or may be left white, as may be desireda lelow the space D are two or more spaces, E, in which the amountfor which the check is drawn is to be written in words. Below the spaces E are two groups oi spaces, F G, to receive the naine ot' the drawer, and which are sepai ated by a central vertical line. I prefer to use tive spaces, F, and t'our spaces, G, as illustrated in the drawings, but more or less maybeused, asdesired. At the right hand' end ot' the spaces F are formed, by vertical lines, two sets ot' spaces, H I. In the spaces H are written the words thousandsj hundreds,77 tens,77 units,77 the fifth spac, when used, being lcit blank.
The spaces I are designed to receive nnt merals and ciphers when filling out the check. At the lel't hand end ot' the spaces G are t formed, by vertical lines, two sets of spaces, J K. ln the spaces J are written the words millions]7 hundreds ofthousandsf7 tens of thousands, thet'ourth space, when used, being left blank.
In tilling out the check the sum for which the said check is drawn is written out in vwords in the spaces E, beginning under that group the-numeral ot' which represents the amount of the highest. denomination mentioned in the sum and under the units, tens, or hundreds otl the said group, according as the said highest denomination is units, tens, or hundreds. The signature ofthe drawer is written in the space F or G. the correspond ing space H of which contains the name ot' the highest denomination mentioned in the sinn. The numerals representing the amounts ot the several denominations mentioned in the sum are then written into the spaces IA or K opposite thc names in the spaces lI or J ofthe said several denominations, ciphers being placed in the spaces I and K not occupied by numerals 'Ihe sum can then be written in numerals at the bottom ot' the check.
A check made and illed out in the manner erein described cannot be raised without making so many changes that the attempted t'raud will be at once detected. For example, it' the sum be seven hundred eighty one sevlenty-eight one-hundredths dollars, this sinn l will be written in the spaces Il, beginning under the left hand or hundreds 7, hundreds being the highest denomination mentioned and seven being the amount of the said denominal tion. The beginning would be in the same IOO place were the sum seven hundred thousand. The signature is then written in the space F, opposite the word hundreds in the space H. The numerals are then Written in the spaces I, seven opposite the word hun(lreds, eightop posite the word tens,77 and one seventy-eight onehundredths opposite the Word units, and ciphers are placed in the other spaces I and K; and, finally, the sum can be Written in numerals at the bottom of the check, as illustrated in Fig. 2.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A check, draft, 0r other money-order made substantially as herein shown and described, with spaces A B C to receive the name of the place and the date, the name of the drawer and the order and the name of the payee, with a space, D, containing groups of three of each of the digits, with spaces E to receive a statement of the sum in Words, with spaces F Gto receive the signature ofthe drawer, and with spaces H I J Kcorresponding with the spaces F Gr, the spaces H J containing the names of 25 the various denominations, and the spaces I K to receive numerals representing the amounts of the said various denominations andciphers, as set forth.
