To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, FRANK G. DAVISON, a citizen of the United States, residing in Jamaica, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Pens and Pencils, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to the class of devices employed for holding pencils, pens, and other similar objects in the pocket.

The object of the invention is to provide a convenient device for this purpose which may be secured within the pocket or upon some part of the clothing in such a manner as to permit one or more pencils or pen-holders of diil'erent sizes to be readily inserted and removed, and yet will exert upon the same sufficient pressure to prevent them from being accidentally dropped out.

The invention consists in constructing from some metal substance, hard rubber, or other suitable material a plate having wings or side pieces projecting forward from each side at approximately right angles, and in encirl cling the samewith a soft-rubber band or other suitable material. The back plate and the side pieces or wings all converge toward the bottom, and are preferably rounded or bent outward slightly at the top. The width or depth of the wings is also preferably somewhat greater at the top than at the bottom for the purpose of affording a larger and wider opening at the top than at the bottom. The soft rubber yields when the pencil or penholder is thrust in the device, and permits objects differing from each other in diameter to be securely held. The friction afforded by the soft rubber is of especial importance for it insures that the object may not be accidentally withdrawn from the holder.

The accompanying drawing illustrates the invention.

A rubber band, B, encircles thcentire plate A, and closes the opening between the outer edges of the wings a and a The width of the wings is preferably somewhat greater at their upper portions than their lower edges, so that the rectangular opening formed by the plate and the band is smaller at the bottom than at the top. Two small pins, 0 e", are preferably secured to the back portion, a, of the plate, and these are intended to bepressed through the material to which the device is to be fastened and bent over, thus holding it securely in position.

I claim as my invention 1. A holder for pencils, pens, &c., consisting of a plate having side pieces projecting therefrom at its edges and a rubber band extending across the open space between said side pieces.

2. A holder for pencils, pens, &e., consisting of a plate having lateral wings converging toward the bottom and a rubber band encircling the same, substantially as described.

3. The combination, substantially as here inbefore set forth, of the plate A, having wings orside pieces, a and a", the band B,and the pins 6 and c", for securing the same, sub stantially as described.

4. A holder for pencils, pens, &c., consisting of the combination, substantially as hereinbefore set forth, of a supportingplate consisting of a central portion having two lateral projections of greater width at one edge than the other and converging toward the narrower portions and an elastic band encircling the same.
