TRICYCLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,019, dated August 25, 1885.
Application filed August 18 1884. Renewed July 13, 1883.
T0 aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that l, THOMAS Sl-IAKESPEAR, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Birmingham, in the county of Varwick, England, manufacturer, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Two-Track Tricycles, (for which a provisional specification has been lodged by me in Great Britain,
.No. 8,937, dated June J33, 1884,) of which the following is a specification.
l'ly invention has for its object to form a tricycle with double driving and differential gear, either arranged at one side or at the middle of the tricycle, the said double driving and differential gear permitting of the ready traveling of the tricycle in a curved path, and also to form the parts of the central driven two-track tricycle so that the tricycle can be readily divided for passing through narrow doorways or passages; and it consists in the construction and combination of parts here inafter particularly described, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure l of the accompanying drawings represents in side elevation, and Fig. 2 in plan, a two-track tricycle constructed according to my invention, having double driving and differential gear applied near the left-hand traveling-whce1. Fig. 3 represents in horizontal section a portion of the tricycle and the driving and differential gear drawn to a larger scale. (I b are the large traveling or driving wheels, and c is the smaller steering-wheel in front of and in a line with the right-hand traveling-wheel, a, the said front steering-wheel, 0, being operated by the steering-gear at d and cranked connecting'rod e of the ordinary kind. The spindle f of the traveling-wheel a. passes through the tubular framing g of the tricycle and carries near one end the bevel-toothed wheel I), and the other traveling-wheel, I), which turns loosely on the prolonged end f of the spi ndlef, earries asimilar bevel-toothed wheel, I
i. 'lr is the chain-wheel, and Z is the brake wheehturning loosely on the shalt f. The CilHlllW1lCGi It carries in its interior the bevelpinion m, which gears together the heveltoothed wheels 71. i on either side of it and through them the two traveling-wheels a I). .Zesides gearing together the two traveling wheels a I), the diflhrential or balance gearing (No model.) Patented in England June 13, 1884, No. 8,937.
represented permits of the independent motion of the said wheels a I), so that when the tricycle travels in a curved path, as in turning corners, one of the trzWeling-wheels a or 55 b may rotate at a different speed from the other traveling-wheel. n is the driving-chain passing over the chaiirwheel k and over the chainwheel 12 on the end of the crank-shaft. q is the brake-handle. 'r is the holding-handle, 6 and s is the bracket for carrying the seat-rod. Fig. 4 represents in plan a tricycle of the kind described, with central driving and dif ferential gear, this arrangement permitting of the division of the tricycle for passing through 6 narrow doorways. Fig. 5 represents in plan the driving-gear and its divided shaft and other parts separated, drawn to a larger scale. Fig.6 represents in side elevation a portion of Fig. a b are the two traveling or drivo ing wheels. 0 is the front steering-wheel. a b" is the divided shaft, the halfshaft a having keyed on its outer end the traveling-wheel a, and the other half-shaft, If", having keyed 011 its outer end the trzweliugwvheel b. The in- 7 nor end of the shaft Z) is hollow for receiving and supporting the inner end of the shaft Around the half-shaft a is a sleeve, a, connected to the framing, and around the other half-shaft, If, is a similar sleeve, 1). The sleeve I) has a bearing-lug, x, at its outer end for sup porting the handle-rest q and brakelever r, and the sleeve a has abearing, for supporting the steering mechanism.
The inner ends of the two half shafts a l) S are geared together by the driving and differential gear h i m of the construct-ion hereinbefore described. The said gear is contained in a box or case, ta, formed between the inner or hearing ends of the sleeves a" bthat is, at the end of the sleeve 1)" is a case, i. within which are the bevel-wheel 71., chain-wheel Ir, carrying the bevel piniou m. and the brake wheel I, and at the end of the sleeve of is a 1)lfll'0,'lt. The case i. is furnished with lugs and scrmvpius at F, and the plate a with lugs and holes at u". 13y screwing the case fto the plate '11 by means of the said lugs and screwpins the halves of the tricycle are connected together. The case L on the sleeve 11 carries the forked arm t, which supports the chaiuwheel I on the crank-shaft, and the said case it also carries the bearing i for supporting the scat-rod and brake-connecting rod.
By nnbolting the two parts t u of the case and drawing the two halves of the tricycle asunder, as represented in Fig. 5, the said halves can be passed through narrow doorways.
The central position of the driving-gear represented in Fig. 4 permits an adjustable or variable throw to be applied to the cranks.
Having now described the nature of my invention and the manner in which the same is to be performed, I wish it to be understood that I claim as my invention- 1. In a tricycle, the combination of the spindle carrying'the drive-wheels, the chainwheel k, and brake-wheel Z, formed together and carrying within them the pinion m, and the bevelfwheels Z1 and 2', meshingwith pinion m, and connected with the two drive-wheels, as set forth, to operate the same, substantially as described. a
2. In a tricycle, the combination of the divided spindle carrying the two drive-wheels, the bevel-gears h i, secured to said spindle, the chain-wheel k, and brake-wheel Z, formed together, the pinion m, secured within said wheels k and Z, and meshing with said gears, a sleeve inclosing each section of the spindle, a box, If, secured to one part of said sleeve, a plate, u, secured to the other part, and bolts for clamping the box and plate together, sub stantially as and for the purpose described.
