THOMAS J SOBECK ATTORNEY T. J. SOBECK May 3, i966 FROSTING CAP 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed Nov. 4, 1963 INVENTOR. THOMAS J. SOBECK FIG ATTORNEY United States Patent 3,249,113 FROSTING CAI Thomas J. Sobeck, Stamford, Conn. (110 NE. 158th St., North Miami Beach, Fla.) Filed Nov. 4, 1963, Ser. No. 321,276 Claims. (Cl. 1329) This invention relates to a frosting cap of the type wherein the cap is placed over the head of a person and with the cap being provided with a multiplicity of inwardly directed dimples or concave recesses whereby a tool, such as a crocheting needle may be forced through the dimples at predetermined areas over the head so that strands of hair may be pulled through the formed opening to project outwardly beyond the cap and with the various strands of hair being subsequently coated with a spray device having the desired coloring, such as gray, silver, gold or any other desirable color and with the cap after removal creating streaks of the colored strands into the hair.
The invention contemplates a cap that is formed over relatively thin plastic, rubber or the like to fit snugly upon the head of the user and with the cap being provided over substantially its entire area with a multiplicity of relatively closely arranged concave recesses that are adapted to be subsequently punctured by a tool for pulling a group of hair strands through the cap for subsequent spraying or coating and with the cap upon opposite sides being slit so that the cap can be adjusted to any particular head size and with the slits being provided with rubber snap fasteners to hold the cap in adjusted position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a cap for the above named purposes that is provided with a marginal flap circumferential thereto and with the flap being upturned to form a gutter for the collection of excess coating material and whereby to prevent the coating material from dripping or running down upon the person. The cap is adapted to be molded and the concave recesses constitute a guiding means for the tool whereby the tool may be engaged with any selected recesses and forced downwardly to puncture the bottom of the recess and to subsequently hook into a group of hairs and pull the hairs upwardly through the formed opening.
The invention further contemplates a cap of the character described that is formed in a half section for tinting or otherwise coloring the forward area of the head and with the half cap also being provided with the concave recesses for the marginal gutter and with the cap also being provided with tapes at the top and upon opposite sides whereby the tapes may be tied together at the neck portion to maintain the cap in position upon the head.
Novel features of construction and operation of the device will be more clearly apparent during the course of the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings wherein has been illustrated the preferred forms of the device and wherein like characters of reference are employed to denote like parts throughout the several figures.

FIGURE 2 is a plan view of the cap prior to installation upon the head and prior to contracting the cap for conforming to a head size,
FIGURE 3 is a central vertical section taken substantially on line 33 of FIGURE 2,
FIGURE 4 is a fragmentary enlarged section taken on line 4-4 of FIGURE 1,
FIGURE 5 is a fragmentary section taken substantially on line 55 of FIGUREI,
3,249,113 Patented May 3, 1966 FIGURE 6 is a side elevation of a modified form of the invention shown in use,
FIGURE 7 is a plan view thereof,
FIGURE 8 is a longitudinal section taken on line 8-8 of FIGURE 7, and
FIGURE 9 is a slightly modified form of the invention for frosting a single group of hair strands.
Referring specifically to the drawings and particularly to FIGURES 1-5, there has been provided a flexible cap 5, contoured to fit the head 6 of a person employing the invention. The cap 5 has a lower marginal area 7 that extends outwardly and is curved upwardly at 8 to form a collection gutter for sprays or other fluids that might drip or run down the cap and to avoid spilling the fluid upon the body of the person. The cap 5 over its major area is provided with a multiplicity of concave recesses 9. The recesses 9 are adapted to have their bottoms punctured by a suitable tool, such as a crochet needle, indicated in dotted lines at 10 in FIGURE 4. The needle 10 punctures the bottom of the recesses and is adapted to be engaged with a group of hairs upon the head to pull them outwardly through the formed aperture 11, such hairs being indicated in FIGURES 1 and 4 at 12.
Since the cap is adapted to be applicable to heads of varying sizes, the cap upon two opposite sides is slit from the gutter upwardly, as indicated at 13. Upon one side of the slits 13 there are provided male snap fasteners 14, preferably formed of rubber or molded integral with the particular material of the cap 5. The male snap fasteners are adapted to enter apertures 15 formed along the opposite side of the slits 13 and as will be observed, there are two rows of the apertures 15 so as to provide an adjustment of the cap with respect to the head. The material upon opposite sides of the slit are adapted to overlap, as shown at 16 in FIGURE 5.
In the use of this form of the invention, the cap is placed upon the head of the person and adjusted to relatively snug fit by the snap fasteners 14 in either desirable row of the apertures 15. The marginal portion of the cap '7 and the gutters 8 overlie the forehead of the user and extend down to preferably overlie the ears. The needle 10 is then forced through the recesses 9 at selected points over the cap and the group of hairs 12 are pulled upwardly through the formed apertures 11 to project outwardly beyond the cap. When sufficient number of groups of hairs are pulled outwardly of the cap in accordance with the selection by the operator, the hairs are then sprayed or otherwise coated with a selected coloring fluid to form various colors and, after the coloring has been applied to the hair, the cap is removed and the coated hairs are combed downwardly, forming streaks in the body of the hair upon the head.
In FIGURES 6-8, there has been provided a cap substantially half of the size of the first named cap and whereby to overlie the head from the forehead back to substantially half of the head. This cap is provided with the same recesses 9 and its margin is provided with the same gutter 8. As will be shown in FIGURE 6, the gutter 8 is extended around the rear edge of the cap to prevent spray or the like from engaging the body of the hair upon the rear area of the head, such gutter extension being indicated at 17. In order to retain the half cap upon the head, the cap at its rear bottom corner is provided with tapes 18 and a third tape 19 is connected to the top portion of the gutter and so that the tapes may be tied together at the neck portion of the user as shown at 20 and whereby the cap is securely retained upon the head during the operation of the piercing of the several recesses 9 to pull the hair outwardly through the recesses. The operation of this form of the invention will be clearly apparent since it functions substantially identical to that previously described.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that a very novel frosting cap has been provided for frosting or otherwise coloring selected strands of hair. The device is preferably molded to the indicated shape, using the relatively thin plastic or relatively thin rubber and Whereby the cap is flexible and conforms to the head of the user. The concave recesses 9 facilitate the puncturing of the recesses by the needle 10, since it only becomes necessary that the point of the needle be rested into the concave and forced downwardly, preventing slipping of the needle from the recess with possible injury to the operator. The device is cheap to manufacture, is strong, usable over and over and greatly facilitates the application of a frosting fluid or other coloring medium to the selected strands of the hair.
The device illustrated in FIGURE 9 is adaptable to function as a frosting means for any selected group of hairs. The device includes a generally square or rectangular sheet of relatively thin plastic 21. The sheet substantially centrally thereof is provided with a relatively large aperture 22. In this form of the invention the sheet 21 is placed over the head at a particular point and a group of hairs are then pulled upwardly through the aperture 22. With the hairs upstanding above the sheet 21, the group of projecting hairs are then treated with the desired fluid that may either color the hair or bleach the hair. After the hair has been treated with the fluid, the sheet 21 is then gathered upwardly to form a cover for the treated hair and, after the hair has dried, the sheet is removed and the hair combed over the head to form streaks or similar colored areas as is customary.
It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction shown, but that changes are contemplated as readily fall within the spirit of the invention as shall be determined by the scope of the subjoined claims.
