Description

UNITED `STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEE SMITH GARRETT, OF FULTON, KENTUCKY.
SASH-I-FSTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 324,830, dated August 2:5, 1885.
A pplication filed June 23, 1885. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEE S. GARRETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fulton, in the county of Fulton and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Automatic VVindow-Catches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. My invention relates to a combined automatic window-sash holder and lock, the object being to provide a device of this character which shall be simple in its construction, readily and easily applied and operated, one that will be strong and durable, and which may be manufactured and supplied at a slight cost.
"With these ends i-n view the invention consists in the combination, with a windowfralne having pins or projections arranged at intervals thereon, of a curved spring-plate secured to the lower sash and having notches to engage the pins or projections.
The invention further consists in the improved construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a window frame, showing` my improvements applied; and Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the holder detached.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, A represents the window-frame, and B represents the lower sash, sliding iu guides thereof, as usual. Upon the inner side of the window-frame are secured, near the upper and lower ends thereof, pins or projections a, which eXtend inwardly, and are located adjacent to the outer face of the sash, s0 that it will clear the pins and will not rub or scrape upon the same.
C represents the holder and fastener. This holder and fastener C consists of a spring plate, whichis secured midway its ends to the front face of the sash on one of the side rails of the saine. The ends of the holder C extend outwardly from the point at which they are secured, and at the upper and lower ends of the holder are provided eyes or loops c, by means of which the holder may be operated, as will be more fully described. Upon the inner sides of the holder, near the ends thereof, are formed notches d, which are adapted-to engage the pins on the windowframe, the upper notch being adapted to engage the upper pin on the window-frame to hold the sash raised, and the lower notch being adapted to engage the lower pin to hold the sash against upward movement until the said lower notch in the holder has been removed from engagement with the pin.
The operation is as follows: Then the sash C is closed, the lower notch, d, engages the under side of the lower pin and holds the sash from being raised. Vhen it is desired to raise the sash, the eye or loop at the lower end of the holder is pulled outwardly, thus withdrawing the notch from engagement with the pin. When the sash is raised, the holder strikes the upper pin, which pushes the holder outwardly, and the notch slides into engagelnent with the upper pin, thus holding the sash in a raised position. to be lowered, the upper eye or loop is drawn outwardly and the sash lowered, and it auto matically engages the lower pin to hold the sash locked. By the arrangement before described the necessity of adjusting the devices to hold the sash locked when lowered, or toholdit raised, is obviated.
The improvements described are simple in their construction. The holder may be manufactured and supplied at a slight cost,is readily and easily applied, strong and durable, and thoroughly effective in its operation.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- The combination, with a windowframe having pins projecting inwardly from the inner side thereof, of the herein-described holder secured to the front face of the lower sash, the holder consisting of a spring-plate secured midway its ends to the sash, and having said ends bent outwardly from the point of attachment of the holder, notches d on the inner side of the holder at the upper and lower ends thereof, said holder being also provided with eyes or loops at its upper and lower ends, for the purpose set forth.
,In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LEE SMITH GARRETT.
