Description

(No'ModeL) T. A. GOODWIN.
STAIR ROD.
Patented Aug. 18,1885.
IIVVE/VTOR arnnr Enrica.
THOMAS A. GOODWIN, OF CAMDEN, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ENOS DISMANT, OF SAME PLACE.
STAIR-ROD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Application filed November 7, 186 I.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS A. Goonwnv, of Camden, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stair-Rods; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in stair-rods, the object being to provide a stairrod which may be readily and conveniently secured to or removed from the stair, as der 5 sired.
A further object is to provide a device whereby the above means may be effectually accomplished, which shall be simple and eco nomical in construction, and durable and efficient in use; and with these ends in View my invent-ion consists in a rod provided at or near its ends with open slots formed in the are of a circle.
My invention further consists in a crank provided at one end with a screw, by means of which it is secured to the stair, and at the other with abutton adapted to register in the groove on the rods.
Myinvention further consists in the certain features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of the rod. Fig. 2 is a detached view 3 5 of the button and crank, and Fig. 3 is a View showing the button in locked adjustment on the rod.
a represents a rod made of any desired material, the said rod being provided at or near its ends with the circular open slots 2).
c is an arcshaped crank, and is provided at one end with the screw d, which is formed integral therewith, or it may be rigidly secured thereto. At its opposite end the crank 5 c is provided with a button, e, which may be rigidly or loosely secured on the crank, as preferred. The button is provided with a shank of sufficient length to permit the crank Patent No. 324,679, dated August 18, 1885.
(No model.)
i c to pass beneath the rod and at the same time to have the button pass on the outside thereof when the parts are forced in locked adjustment.
To secure the rod in position, it is first placed against the stair. The screw is then secured to the stair, and the crank is then forced around beneath the rod, thus causing the shank to enter the groove, and the button passes on the outer face of the rod, where it remains in locked adjustment.
An important advantage to be attained by my device consists in the fact that a screwdriver is altogether dispensable, as when the screw d is placed in position and started home it is entirely accomplished by turning the crank c by means of the button 6..
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In stair-rods, the combination, with a rod provided with open slots at its upper edge, of buttons movably secured to the stair, the said buttons and the slots in the rod arranged relatively to each other, whereby the buttons can be moved into and out of the slots for locking or unlocking the rod, substantially as set forth.
2. In stair-rods, the combination, with a rod having arc-shaped open slots formed therein, of cranks secured to the stair and buttons secured to the cranks, the said crank and buttons being arranged relatively to each other, whereby the buttons can be moved into slots for the purpose of locking the rodsin position.
3. In stair-rods, the combination, with a rod provided with circular slots, of a crank provided with a screw and a handle, whereby the screw is tnrnedinto the stair and the handle into the slot, thereby locking; the rod in position, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this 0 specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THOMAS A. GOODWIN. Witnesses:
