'NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. LEPPER, OF ST. ALBANS, VERMONT.
CULTIVATO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part. of Letters Fatent No. 324,265, dated Augu 11, 1885.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. LEPPER, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Albans, in the county of Franklin and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cultivators; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which'it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a side view of my device with one wheel removed, and Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same. verted plan view, and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal central sectional view.
This invention has relation. to improvements in cultivators; and'it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and particularly pointed out inthe claims appended. Referring to the accompanying drawings by. letter, A indicates the main frame, to the under side of which is transversely arranged in suitable bearings the axle B, carrying ordinary driving and supporting wheels.
E indicates the cultivator-beams,which ex tend forwardly and are j ournaled at their rear ends on the axle B. These beams E are peculiarlyconstructed at their outer ends, having an outwardly, downwardly, and forwardly curved portion, a, which is provided with a concave face to seat the point i, which is held thereto, and may be properly adjusted by means of a screw passing vertically through the same. The standards or beamsE are provided at the forward end of the curved portion a with a perforated depending lug b, in which and an eyebolt, c, at the opposite end of the said curved portion a, is journaled the forward end of the blade f whereby the same may be adjusted laterally by devices which will be hereinafter explained.
J indicates the roller-arms, which are secured at their rear ends to the beams E, at or about the connection with the branch arms. These roller-arms curve upwardly and extend forward slightly in advance of the plow-points, and are provided at their outer ends with a Fig. 3 is an invertical series of transverse perforations for the reception of a stud or spindle which sup- :ports the said rollers. the length oftlie beam E depends a hanger From about midway lug, d, which is provided at its lower end with aperforation, as shown, for the passage of a horizontal transversely-curved rod D, the opposite end of which'is curved upwardly and secured to the brace or branch arm 6 of the beam E.
F indicates a vertical rod, which is secured at its lower end to the rear portion of the plowblades, and is adjustably connected with the transversely-curved rod D, by means of a socket, G,whichis also adapted to be adjusted on the said curved rod. Therefore it will be seen that both a lateral and vertical adjustment of the blades may be had upon the curved rod D, there being set-screws employed to fix the position of the socket with relation to the vertical shovelrod and transverselycurved rod, respectively.
' 0 indicates a transverse shaft which is journaled in bearings c 0 upon the upper side of the frame A. This shaft 0 has keyed atone end a segment, H, and loosely arranged upon its opposite end a segment, I. The segments are provided at their outer edges or peripheries with an annular groove, and secured to the forward upper end of these flanged portions are chainshflwhich lie inthe said groove and are respectively connected at their lower ends to the beams E. The segment I is provided with a central vertical extension, h, having at its upper end a notch, h, for the engagement of a gravitating pawl upon the handlever K, as will be presently explained.
g is a collar which is'keyed to the shaft 0 on the inner side of the hand-lever K, and is provided with a vertical extension and notch, similar to that of the segment I, which is also designed to receive agravitating pawl, 70, pivoted to the hand-lever. These gravitating pawls 7a 7a, which are pivoted on opposite sides near the lower end of the lever K, are respectively connected by wires k to angle-levers M,
which are also pivoted to the upper end of the said hand-lever. Thehand-lever K is loosely arranged upon the shaft 0 between the segment I and keyed collar 9, and is provided with a spring-hook, 11,011 its rear longitudinal side, which is adapted to engage a hook-lug, M, upon the main frame when thrown rearward and downward by the driver. This piv' oted spring-hook L is connected by means of a rod, Z, to a finger-lever, N, which is pivoted near the upper end of the hand-lever K. The upper end of the hand-lever K is provided with a pivoted or swiveled tip, P, having diametrically-arranged lateral studs, which are adapted to engage the branches of the pivoted angle-levers M, and through the medium of the rods k raise the gravitating pawls from engagement with the notches of the segment I and collar-lug keyed to the shaft 0. Thus it will be perceived that the plows may be raised together, or either of them raised independently, by the movement of thehand-lever, and the said lever locked to the hook-lug on the main frame, the pawls being at all times ready to engage the notches on the said segment and collar-lug keyed to the shaft 0, the pawls being disengaged from the collar-lug or segment by turning the swiveled tip P so as to bring the desired lateral pin in engagement with the desired anglelever, so as to lift its attached pawl.
The segments may have a stop, such as a, and the hand-lever a stop, such as m,whereby the movements of the respective devices may be limited.
Having described this invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a cultivator, the combination, with the beams, of the shovels pivoted at their forward ends, and provided with the vertical rod near their opposite ends, the transversely-curved rod, and the socket carrying set-screws,where-' by the said shovels may be both vertically and laterally adjusted, substantially as specifled.
2. The combination, with the main frame and its axle, of the shovel beams or arms journaled thereon, the transverse shaft 0, the segments at opposite ends thereof, the collar-lug keyed to the said shaft, and the hand-lever having devices adapted to engage the adjacent segment and collar-lug, whereby either or both of the shovel-arms may be raised, substantially as specified.
3. The combination, with the main frame, its axle and plow-beams, of the segments and chains connecting the same with the said beams, the transverse shaft, hand-lever having pawls adapted to engage the loose segment and keyed collar-lug independently and alternately or simultaneously to raise the plows in a similar manner, substantially as specified.
4. The combination, with the transverse shaft having at one end a loose segment and at the opposite end a fixed segment connected, respectively, with the plow arms or beams, of the collar-lug keyed on the said shaft, and the hand-lever having pawls to engage the loose segment and collar-lug, and a spring-actuated pivoted hook to engage a hook-lug on the main frame, whereby both or either of the plows may be secured in a raised position, substantially as specified.
5. The combination, with the transverse shaft, of the hand-lever arranged loosely thereon, the pawls on the opposite lower sides of the said lever, the angle-levers pivoted above the wires connecting the pawls with the angle-levers, and the swiveled tip having lateral studs adapted to engage the said angle-levers alternately, substantially as specified.
6. In a cultivator, the combination, with the axle, of the shovel arms or beams having the inwardly and rearwardly directed bracearms, and the outer curved portion, a, having the concave face to seat the point i, and the roller-carrying arm secured to the said beam, and curved upwardly and forwardly in ad vance of the plow-point, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE WV. LEPPER.
