Description

(No Model.) V
. O. W. HARMAN.
WATCH CASE.
Patented Mar. 3, 1885.
UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFIcE.
O. \VESLEY HARMAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
WATCH-GAS E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 313,326, dated March 3, 1885.
(X0 model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, O. \VnsLEY HARMAN', of the city of New York, in county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in VVatch-Oases, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object a construction of watch-case which combines the advantages of neatness, strength, and dustproof qualities with great compactness in direction of thickness and important economy in manufacture. For this purpose I cause the move inent-ring to project beyond one edge of the case-center, and form on such projecting portion one or more screw-threads for attachment of as many caps, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an axial section on line 1 l of a watch-case embodying my invention in its preferred form. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same without the back. Figs. 3, 4, 5, and 6 show modifications of my improved case.
A may represent an annular piece of metal, which combines the functions of case-center and bezel or inner front cap. A rabbet, a, in the inner rear margin of annulus A receives flange b of movement-ring B, which ring is inserted at the rear opening of said annulus, and when thus inserted has a portion, 0, which projects rearwaid from the said casecenter, and has an exterior screw-thread, '0, for the corresponding screw-thread, (Z, on the concave or inner periphery of the back I), which, when.
screwed home, seats upon the rear shoulder, a, of said case-center or annulus A.
For watches employing an inner back or inner rear cap, E, an additional screw-thread ed step, c, and shoulder 0 enable dust-proof attachment of such inner back having a corresponding interior screw-thread, c, which back, when driven home, seats upon said shoulder a". r
F are half-head screws, which enable retention of the movement-ring within the case. Circumferential shift of the movement-ringis prevented by one or more spurs, G, which 00- cupy corresponding notches, a, in the casecenter.
The above-described preferred form of my improvement is susceptible of various modifications. For example, the screw-thread for the rear cap may be formed on the inner margin of the lilOVBlHGlilJllilQ, as at c, Fig. 8, the cap-margin being exteriorly scrcwthreaded, as at c in said figure. Such movement-ring may be formed for application of a single back without an inner back, as in Fig. 4'. Such movement-ring and attached back may be as sociated with a case-center having a separable front or bezel, either with front cap, as in Fig. 5, to form a hunting-case, or with a bezel only for an open face.
The improvement may be used withcases whose pendant constitutes the usual projection from the case-center, or with cases in which the pendant is a projection from the movement-ring and occupies a notch in the case-center, as at J, Figs. 1 and 2. Finally, the movement-ring may be combined with a case-center formed in one integral piece with the back, as in Fig. 6, its protruding screwthreaded portion being then in front, as at c, for dust-proof attachment of a correspondingly screw-threaded bezel, K, as in said figure.
I claim herein as new and of my invention- 1. In a watch-case in which the center and one of the caps are formed in one piece, the other cap secured to the movement-ring and seating upon the case-center, substantially as set forth.
2. In a watch-case in which the center and bezel are formed in one piece, the back screwing onto the movement-ring and seating upon the case-center, substantially as set forth.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
O. \VESLEY EAR-MAN. A t-te st JOHN A. PENN, GEO. H. KNIGHT.
