ATTORNEYS United States Patent ()fiice 3,132,778 Patented May 12, 1964 The present invention relates to a form for the display of items useful for covering the head such as Wigs, hats or headdresses.

Heretofore, forms having the shape of the head have been used to display such items. These forms are rigid and have been made of blocks of Wood; with head shape of various materials, or with the head shape formed from metal, cardboard, or plastic material.

Proper display and support of the items placed on the forms require close control of the dimensions of the form and particularly that the diameter correspond to that of the head or to the diameter of the wig, hat or headdress which is to be placed on the form.

it has therefore been necessary heretofore to have assorted sizes of forms for the different dimensions of the items to be displayed.

It is a great inconvenience to have such a large number of forms available. The present invention overcomes this inconvenience.

In accordance with the present invention, the form comprises a surface which is given a shape required to receive a wig or headdress with at least a part of the surface made deformable and contractable by cutting out bars, fingers or laminates in the surface directed radially towards the periphery of the form.

The present invention is capable of various mechanical embodiments, one of which is shown in the accompanying drawings and is described hereinafter to illustrate the present concept. The embodiments of the present invention shown in the drawings and described hereinafter should in no way be construed as defining or limiting the invention.

In the accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters indicate like parts, FIG. 1 is a somewhat schematic showing of an embodiment of the present invention shown in profile;

FIG. 2 shows the embodiment of FIG. 1 from the rear; and

FIG 3 is a view similar to that of FIG. 1 showing a wig placed on the form with the hair of the wig shown only partially to facilitate the illustration of the invention.

In the embodiment shown in the drawings, the form comprises a surface 1 preferably of elastic plastic material moulded or conformed to a shape of the part of the head to receive the wig or headdress.

It is to be understood that the surface of elastic plastic material may be replaced by a metal surface contoured to the shape desired or by any elastic material which is sufiiciently rigid to be formed into the shaped surface.

The surface of the form is cut out in such a way as to obtain bars, laminates or fingers 2 extending radially toward the periphery of the form and extending at least over a part of the area thereof.

Bars 2 are elastic and can be bent by pressure exerted on them.

The front part 3 of surface 1 corresponds to the forehead and remains rigid or semi-rigid because of the shape given to the form during moulding or stamping of the form.

The rear part of the form, on the other hand, includes the cut-outs forming the radially extending bars or fingers which extend to adjacent the zone corresponding to the top of the head and which extend through the periphery of the form to provide compressibility of the form in the area corresponding to the nape of the neck.

Preferably, and as seen in the figures, bars or fingers 2 are thinner at their outer extremities than at the base and exhibit the form of a very elongated V. This shape permits the bars or fingers 2 to approach each other when bent without overlapping to provide a reduction in diameter of the shape of the form by placing on the form a wig or the headdress having a smaller diameter than the form.

The elasticity of the form and the stretching effect of the elastic bars or fingers 2 provide contact between and complete filling of the interior of the wig or headdress by the form.

FIG. 3 shows a wig 4 placed on a form of the present invention and shows bars 2 contracted at the periphery 5 of wig 4.

The form of the present invention can therefore display wigs, hats, or headdresses of various diameters while providing good support for these items.

The present invention can bemodified in various ways without departing from the present inventive concept. For example bands or fingers 2 can extend over other parts of the form than in the zone corresponding to the nape of the neck and can be cut out along curved lines in lieu of straight cuts.

The exterior surface of the form can be provided with a roughened surface to prevent sliding of the wig or of the headdress on the form.

It should therefore be obvious that the present invention satisfies the objective discussed above.

In view of the various embodiments discussed above, reference should be had to the following claim to determine the scope of the present inventive concept.

What is claimed: 7

A display form for wigs, hats and headdresses comprising a surface shaped in the form of a portion of a human head to receive and be covered by a headdress,

said surface including a resilient portion corresponding to the back of a human head, said resilient portion comprising a plurality of separate fingers formed integrally with said surface and extending over said surface portion corresponding to the back of the head whereby said surface portion is elastically deformable.
