Specification of lLetters Patent No. 31,264, dated January 29, i861.

To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, JUsTUs S. SMITH, of Lowell, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Spring Bed-Bottom; and I do hereby declare the same to be fully describedin the following specification and `illustrated in the accompanying drawings,

of whichM Figure l, is a top View; Fig. 2, a side elevation, and Fig. 3, an end view of it.

In carrying out my invention, I make a frame, A, composed of a series of thin wooden bars or slats, a, a, a a, etc., and two connecting bars, Z). The bars, a, a, a, ac, &c., I arrange parallel to each other and on the two bars, o, b, these latter being disposed parallel to one another, and with respect to the bars, a, a, a, or their eX- tremities in manner as shown in the drawings. Each bar, a, where it crosses the two bars, Z), o, should be fastened to them either by screws or other proper means.

To the lower side of each of the supportingbars, I), o, I fasten the middle part of one of two semielliptic or bow springs, B, B.

Each of the said springs, at its two ends.l
