LEWIS WILLIAMS, OF JOHNSTOVVN, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOB TO CAMBRIA IRON COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
APPARATUS FOR ANNEALING WIRE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 312,417, dated February 17,1885.
Application filed August 24, 1883. (No model.)
To (LZZ whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, LEWIS WILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at-Johnstown, in the county of Gambria and State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Annealing \Vire, of which the following isafnll, clear, and exact description.
In the drawings, Figure l is a section through an annealing pot or oven, showing my improvements; and Fig. 2 is a top View of the same. 7
The parts, of the oven are indicated as follows: a is the brick-work or masonry. d is the annealing-pot. b is a fire-arch. c c are tines leading from the fire-arch to space around the pot. h h are floor-plates covering the masonry. f is the cover of the annealing-pot. g is a holethrough the cover. t is a plate covering the chargi ng-holein the floor-plates, provided with an orifice, p. k is a flue secured to cover i, the continuation of which flue, n, is secured to the floor-plate h, the further continuance of this flue to connect with a general draft flue or chimney being indicated by 0. 1" being a hole through the floor-plates. m is a peep-ho1e through which to ascertain the con dition of the wire, and Zis a ringby which the covering-plate i and its attached flue are handled.
Theoperation of this apparatus is as follows: The coveringsz' and f being removed,
the pot d is filled with wire and covered with the lid f. The plate-covering z, with its attached flue 7c, is placed in position, covering the hole in the floorplates, conneczion being made between the parts of the line It and a by inserting the one into the other, or otherwise. This allows the heat and smoke to pass around the anuealingpot, and thence through the lines is, a, and 0 to the general flue or chimney.
It will be found convenient in practice to connect the fine 0 leading from each pot with a general fine passing along or between a row or rows of ovens and leading into a chimney.
The plate 2', with its attached fine 7c, are strongly made of iron, and a crane may be conveniently used in shifting them.
I am aware that an annealing-furnace has been constructed with covering-plate and fines, as these are essential parts in certain forms of ovens, and that gases have been taken off centrally through the covering-plate; but my apparatus differs in making the flue 7c fast upon the covering-plate i and removable with it, and connecting removable fine k with permanent flue n. This construction prevents the escape of gases, which is always disagreeable and deleterious; it gives solidity to the covering. and enables it to be manipulated wit-h facility, and an improved draft is a result.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with an annealing-ovemthe covering-plate if, the flue It, permanently attached thereto, the elbow a,- and downwardacting flue 0, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
LEWIS \VILLIAMS.
