UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL EHRMAN, OF MOUNT JOY, PENNSYLVANIA.
HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 31,230, dated January 29, 1861.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL EHRMAN, of Mount Joy, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Loose-Jointed iinges, Adapted for a Right or Left Handed Door, Shutter, or the Like; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which A represents that part of the hinge attached to the amb or door or shutter frame, B, the moving piece attached to the door or shutter. The portion A, has a centraljoint, through which the pivot E, passes, and in which it is permanently fixed, this pivot projects equally on both sides of the central joint, with a rounded conic head on each end as shown, being however of a uniform diameter for the length, corresponding to the thickness of the joint on B. The joint on B, is also central so that it can he slipped over the pivot on either side of the joint on A. The rounded points of the pivot, while they are ornamental, aid the operator greatly in hanging heavy doors. There may also be a molding D, cast on to each piece and carried around the joints centrally to give additional strength to the hinge as shown.
