The groove 2i; has a leading edge 7% and a trailing edge 30. Adjacent the trailing edge are mounted a pair of bearing blocks 72 and 72'. Each of the bearing blocks 72 and 72' is provided with an elongated slot 74 extending centrally therethrough which elongated slots are adapted to receive fastening means such as bolts '76 which threadedly engage the bottom surface '78 of the groove 23 securing each of the bearing blocks in its predetermined position.
Further, the bearing blocks are bored as at Si? to receive cylindrical ends 82 of the clamping bar 2%, Whereby the bar may be rotated about the axis of the cylindrical ends 82. Between these cylindrical ends 32, the clamping bar may be quadrangular in cross section as more clearly illustrated in FIG. 3. However, it is necessary that the bar have one quadrangular face 3 and a cooperating lower edge in order to insure simple insertion and removal of the sheet and positive clamping of the sheet to the roll. One of the quadrangular faces 3 is mounted in spaced parallel relationship to the trailing edge 31} of the groove .28 with the spacing between the face 84 and the surface 3% of the groove 28 being so selected that the leading edge of the particular master sheet may be freely inserted between the face 84 and the face 3% when the face 84 is generally in a plane parallel to the face 30 of the groove 2%.
The clamping assembly also includes a manual actuating lever 86 illustrated as a cylindrical bar, one end of which is securely received in a cooperating bore in face 88 of the clamping rod 62. It will be noted that the face 88 is the face parallel to the face 84 previously described.
The extended end 99 of the manual actuating bar 86 may be bored to receive end 92 of a tension spring 94 While the opposite end as of the spring is secured by bolt means ht; to the base of the groove 28 in the roll whereby the handle 86 and the clamping bar 62 are urged by the spring 94 into a clamping position. The urging of the spring aids in preventing the handle from pivoting upwardly during high-speed actuation of the duplicating machine.
Referring again to FIG. 3 of the drawings, the handle 86 is manually urged in the direction of the directional arrow 1% when the leading end of the master sheet is being inserted or removed from between face 84 of the clamping bar 62 and face 36 of the groove 28. With the master sheet in position, the handle is released and the spring 94 urges the handle in the opposite direction to the directional arrow 1% which urges edge 192 of the bar 62 into contact with the outer surface of the master sheet 26 which, in turn, urges the inner face of the master sheet into engagement with the trailing edge 31) of the groove 28 securely clam ing the master sheet on the master roll. As illustrated, edge N2 may be slightly rounded to prevent the clamping force of the edge from cutting the master sheet during clamping thereof.
it will be particularly noted that any force tending to urge the leading edge of the master sheet as from its clamped position will increase the clamping force provided by the edge 192 of the bar 62, thus insuring positive anchoring of the leading edge of said sheet 25.
While the foregoing invention has been primarily described with reference to the master sheet roll of a duplicating machine as hereinbefore discussed, a similar clamp may advantageously be employed to secure the blanket 16 to the blanket roll 3.4 as illustrated at 23 in FIG. 1 of the drawings.
Further, in the illustrated forms of the invention, a single clamping device is employed adjacent the trailing edge of the respective grooves of the master and blanket rolls whereby the trailing ends of the blanket and the master sheet are unconnected to their respective rolls. Where desired, a similar clamping device may be employed adjacent the leading edges of the respective grooves of said rolls whereby the trailing edge of the attached master sheets and blankets may also be anchored.
Referring to FIG. 5 of the drawings, there is shown a modified form of the present invention wherein the bearing bl cks for the rod are provided with stop means for the sheet to be clamped to the roll. in FIG. 5, each of the bearing blocks 72' has adjustably secured thereto member 119 having a foot portion or stop member 112.
In the illustrated form of the invention, member 11%) is' slotted as at lid and limited vertical movement of the member relative to its bearing block is provided by loosening the clamping screws 118.
Where desired, cooperating indicia may be provided on the member 116 and the bearing block as shown at 114 to permit accurate relative adjustment of the pair of members 119.
Through the use of the stop members lit the operator may simply and accurately place master sheets on the master roll in serial succession. Further, with the improved stop member, a master sheet may be canted a predetermined amount by placing one stop member at a different height relative to its companion stop member.
From the foregoing description of the present invention, it will be appreciated that various modifications may be made in the form of the improved clamping device without departing from the spirit of the present invention as defined in the following claims.

In a printing device including a roll having a groove extending longitudinally across the cylindrical surface thereof and means cooperating with a wall of said groove for clamping a sheet to the cylindrical surface of the roll comprisin a bar, said bar having at least one rectangular face and a cooperating clamping edge, said clamping edge being continuous and substanially coextensive with the wall of the groove, cylindrical end portions for said bar, a pair of bearing blocks adapted to receive the cylindrical end portions of said bar, means mounting one of said pair of bearing blocks in the groove of the roll adjacent each end of the groove to position said one face of said bar in parallel spaced relation to the trailing edge of the groove, and handle means secured to said bar for pivoting said bar about the bearing blocks to a sheet receiving and removing position and a position wherein a clamping edge of the said one face of the bar secures an end of the sheet in clamping engagement with said trailing edge of the roll groove, and a stop member adjustably carried by each of said hearing blocks.

In a printing device including a roll having a groove extending longitudinally across the cylindrical surface thereof and means cooperating with a wall of said groove for clamping a sheet to the cylindrical surface of the roll comprising a bar, said bar having cylindrical end portions and between said cylindrical end portions said bar being generally quadrangular in transverse cross section, a pair of bearing blocks adapted to receive the cylindrical end portions of said bar, means mounting one of said pair of bearing blocks in the groove of the roll adjacent each end of the groove to position a planar face'of said bar in parallel spaced relation to the trailing edge of the groove, handle means secured to said bar for pivoting said bar about the bearing blocks to a sheet receiving and removing position and a position wherein a radial inner edge of the said planar face of the bar secures an end of the sheet in clamping engagement with said trailing edge of the roll groove and resilient means connected to said roll and said handle means for urging said radial inner edge of said bar into clamping engagement with said end of the sheet, said radial inner edge being continuous and substantially coextensive with the trailing edge of the roll groove.

In a printing device including a master roll having a groove extending longitudinally across the cylindrical surface thereof, an impression roll operatively aligned with the master roll and means for directing ink to the outer surface of the master roll; the combination conisting of means for securing a master sheet to said master roll comprising a bar, said bar having cylindrical end portions and between said cylindrical end portions said bar being generally quadrangular in transverse cross section, a pair of bearing blocks adapted to receive the cylindrical end portions of said bar, means mounting one of said pair of bearing blocks in the groove of the master roll adjacent each end of the roove to position a planar face of said bar in parallel spaced relation to the trailing edge of the groove, handle means secured to said bar for pivoting said bar about the bearing blocks to a master sheet receiving and removing position and a position wherein a radial inner edge of said planar face of the bar urges an end of the master sheet into clamping engagement with said trailing edge of the master roll groove, and resilient means normally urging said handle means and said bar to a position wherein said radial inner edge is in contact with said master sheet, said radial inner edge being continuous and substantially coextensive with the trailing edge of the roll groove.

In a printing device inclining a master roll, an impression roll operatively aligned with the master roll and having a groove extending longitudinally across the cyindrical surface thereof, means for direct ng ink to the outer surface of the master roll; the combination consisting of means for securing a blanket sheet to said blanket roll comprising a bar, said bar having cylindrical end portions and between said cylindrical end portions said bar being generally quadrangular in transverse cross section, a pair of bearing blocks adapted to receive the cylindrical end portions of said bar, means mounting one of said pair of bearing blocks in the groove of the blanket roll adjacent each end of the groove to position a planar face of said bar in paralle spaced relation to the trailing edge of the groove, handle means secured to said bar for pivoting said bar about the bearing blocks to a blanket sheet receiving and removing position and a position wherein a radially inner edge of said planar face of the bar urges an end of the blanket sheet into clarnping engagement with said trailing edge of the roll groove, said radial inner edge being continuous and substantially coextensive with the trailing edge of the roll groove, and resilient means normally urging said radial inner edge of said bar into engagement with the blanket sheet.
5. in a printing device including a master roll, a blankct roll, and an impression roll, all operatively aligned, a groove extending longitudinally across the cylindrical surface of said master roll and said blanket roll, the combination consisting of means for securing a sheet to said master roll and to said blanket roll comprising a bar, said bar having cylindrical end portions and between said cylindrical end portions said bar being generally quadrangular in transverse cross section, bearing blocks adapted to receive the cylindrical end portions of said bar, means mounting one of said bearing blocks to the groove of the master roll and the blanket roll adjacent each end or" said grooves to position a planar face of said bar in parallel spaced relationship to the trailing edge of each of said grooves, handle means secured to each of said bars for pivoting said bars about the bearing blocks to a sheet receiving and removing position and a position wherein a radial inner edge of said planar face of each of said bars urges an end of said sheet into clamping engagement with the trailing edges of each of said roll grooves, and resilient means normally urging the radial inner edge of each of said bars into clamping engagement with th ir respective sheets, the said radial inner edge of each of said bars being continuous and substantially coextensive with the respective trailing edges of each of said roll grooves.

In a printing device including a roll having a groove extending longitudinally across the cylindrical surface thereof and means cooperating with a wall of said groove for clamping a sheet to the cyl ndrical surface of the roll comprising a bar, said bar having cylindrical end portions and between said cylindrical end portions said bar having a planar face, said planar face defining at least one longitudinal edge therealong, said longitudinal edge being radially spaced from said cylindrical surface, a pair of bearing blocks adapted to receive the cylindrical end portions of said bar, means mounting one of said pair of bearing blocks in the groove of the roll adjacent each end of the groove to position said planar face of said bar in parallel spaced relation to the trailing edge of the groove, handle means secured to said bar for pivoting said bar about the bearing blocks to a sheet receiving and removing position and a position wherein said longitudinal edge of the said planar face of the bar secures an end of the sheet in clamping engagement with said trailing edge of the roll groove with the longitudinal edge making line contact with the end of the sheet, the planar face being out of parallelism with the trailing edge of the groove when the line contact is made and resilient means connected to said roll and said handle means for urging said longitudinal edge of said bar into clamping engagement with said end of the sheet, said longitudinal edge being continuous and substantially coextensive with the trailing edge of the roll groove.

Claims (1)

1. IN A PRINTING DEVICE INCLUDING A ROLL HAVING A GROOVE EXTENDING LONGITUDINALLY ACROSS THE CYLINDRICAL SURFACE THEREOF AND MEANS COOPERATING WITH A WALL OF SAID GROOVE FOR CLAMPING A SHEET TO THE CYLINDRICAL SURFACE OF THE ROLL COMPRISING A BAR, SAID BAR HAVING AT LEAST ONE RECTANGULAR FACE AND A COOPERATING CLAMPING EDGE, SAID CLAMPING EDGE BEING CONTINUOUS AND SUBSTANIALLY COEXTENSIVE WITH THE WALL OF THE GROOVE, CYLINDRICAL END PORTIONS FOR SAID BAR, A PAIR OF BEARING BLOCKS ADAPTED TO RECEIVE THE CYLINDRICAL END PORTIONS OF SAID BAR, MEANS MOUNTING ONE OF SAID PAIR OF BEARING BLOCKS IN THE GROOVE OF THE ROLL ADJACENT EACH END OF THE GROOVE TO POSITION SAID ONE FACE OF SAID BAR IN PARALLEL SPACED RELATION TO THE TRAILING EDGE OF THE GROOVE, AND HANDLE MEANS SECURED TO SAID BAR FOR PIVOTING SAID BAR ABOUT THE BEARING BLOCKS TO A SHEET RECEIVING AND REMOVING POSITION AND A POSITION WHEREIN A CLAMPING EDGE OF THE SAID ONE FACE OF THE BAR SECURES AN END OF THE SHEET IN CLAMPING ENGAGEMENT WITH SAID TRAILING EDGE OF THE ROLL GROOVE, AND A STOP MEMBER ADJUSTABLY CARRIED BY EACH OF SAID BEARING BLOCKS.
