To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, LEWIS F. WARD, of Marathon, in the county of Cortland and State of New York, have invented a new and 1m'- proved Scarf or Necktie and Cuff Holder or Fastener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.A

rIhis invention consists in an open slotted or slitted elastic holder or device of peculiar construction,for use as a detachable appendage to collar and cuff buttons for holding or securing in proper position on the person either scarfs 0r neck ties or bows and cuffs, the same device being applicable to each of such articles-that is, one at a timesubstantially as hereinafter described and claimed.

Reference is to be had tothe accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the gures.

Figure 1 represents aview in perspective of a scarf or necktie and cuff holder embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a front view of a neektie and collar in part with my improved holder applied to the collar-button for securing the tie in position, said holder occupying a like position when used for securing ascarf; Fig. 3, an inner view of a front detachable neckbow with the holder in position for securing it, and with lthe collar-button in section; and Fig. 4, a view' of the device as applied to securing a wrist-cuff in place.

The improved fastener or holder, which may be made of any suitable elastic material-as, for instance, be produced from an elastic narrow metal strip or vpiece of spring-wire-is composed in part of a bifurcated or open slitted back, B, of concave form in direction of its length, to conform to or approximate the curvature of the neck, and having its open ends b b spread outward, and the longitudinal slit in it made to form an enlarged opening, c, intermediately of the length ofthe fastener. rlhe back B thus constructed serves to admit of the engagement of the fastener with the collarbutton O or cuff-button G, when in place, by passing' the spread ends b b over or past the shank of the button or stud, which springs the two limbs of the bifurcated back apart till the shank is received within the enlarged opening @,when said limbs close again to hold the fastener on the button-shank back of its outer head. By pulling on the fastener in a reverse direction the limbs of the bifurcated back B will be sprung outward to release the fastener from the button. rlhis forms a simple and secure means of attaching the fastener to the button, with every facility for detachment when required. Said bifurcated back B is doubled over in front from its spread ends b b, and eX- tended to form a bifurcated curved continuation or portion, d, parallel with the main or inner portion of the back, and forming or establishing between it and said inner portion of the back a slotted way orpassage, e, for the outer head of the button when slipping the fastener to or removing it from the button. The opposite end of the inner section of the back B is doubled over in a reverse direction to form a spring-tongue, D, extending the length of the fastener, or thereabout, outside of the portion d. lf desired, the inner end of the portion d may be soldered or otherwise made fast t0 the innerface of the root end of the tongue D. The entire fastener is thus made all in one piece. When it is desired to apply it to the collar-button O, entered to its place through the collar-band of the shirt, the bifurcated back of the fastener is passed from its spread ends along past the shank of the button and closes on said shank at the opening c, with the outer head of the button in the slotted way or passage e. This leavesthe springtongue D pointing to one side forreception within or between it and the portion d of the scarf-band, or of one end portion of the tieE, after the tie has its knot made and before tying the bow. In this way the tie is held central or in position and kept from rising or unduly falling in front.

When the fastener is applied to a ready-made bow, F, it is fitted horizontally over or on the collar-button G, as shown in Fig. 3, and the tongue D made to engage with or pass through one or more loop-straps, f, secured to the inside of the bow.

To hold a cuff, G, in position, as shown in Fig. 4, the fastener is passed and secured in like manner on or over the shank portion of the back cuff stud or button, C', and the back IOO portions ofthe cuff entered beneath the springtongue D, which will serve to securely hold the cuff in place,with facility for removing it when required.

This device or fastener essentially differs from a button or stud having a spring-tongue permanently secured to it for holding the cuff or article to be secured in place.

Having thus described my invention,l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The within-described scarf, necktie, or cuiil fastener, for use asa detachable appendage to collar and cuff buttons or studs, constructed of elastic metal or material bent and slitted or slotted to form a bifurcated inner back or back portion, B, having spread-out outer ends, b b, and an enlarged intermediate opening, c, an outer back portion or extension, d, leaving a slot or passage, e, for the outer head of the stud or button, and a spring-tongue, D, arranged on the outside of said portion d, and extending toward the spread-out ends b b of the bifurcated back, essentially as shown and described.
