United States Patent 3,l2ll,234 CiGARETTE HGLDER Carin Warren, 1M2 Pasadena St, San Antonio, Tea. Filed Jan. 2, 1952, Ser. No. 163,722 1 Claim. (Cl. 131-258) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in cigarette holders and has for its primary object to provide novel means for mounting a burning cigarette on a finger for convenient smoking and in a manner to permit said finger and the hand to be freely used for other purposes such as baiting a fishhook, firing a gun, etc.
Another important object of the present invention is to provide a holder of the character described comprising a novel construction and arrangement of spring-actuated coacting jaws for firmly gripping a cigarette.
Still another important object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a holder of the aforementioned character comprising unique means, operable by the thumb of the same hand on which the cigarette is mounted, for opening the jaws.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently appa ent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view, showing an improved cigarette holder constructed in accordance with the present invention in use;
FIGURE 2 is a perspective view of the holder per se;
FIGURE 3 is an end elevational view;
FZGURE 4 is a top plan view of the device;
5 is a perspective view, showing another embodiment of the invention in use;
FEGURE 6 is an end elevational view of the modification, showing the operator in section;
FIGURE 7 is a perspective view of the modification; and
FIGURE 8 is a view in horizontal section on an enlarged scale, taken substantially on the line il-8 of FIGURE 7.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the present invention which has been illustrated in FIGURES 1 to 4, inclusive, of said drawing comprises a resilient coil 9 of suitable material which is adapted to he slipped in the manner of a sleeve or ring on the first or index finger it? of a hand 11. In the embodiment shown, the coil 9 has a lefthand wind.
Formed integrally with the ends of the coil 9 is a pair of angularly extending legs or arms 12. The arms 12 are inwardly angulated and crossed at 13. Then, the arms 12 are reversely angulated and laterally bent to recross at is for providing a pair of coasting, generally V-shaped jaws for receiving and firmly gripping a cigarette therebetween, as indicated at 16. It will be noted that at '13 and 14 the arms 12 cross on opposite sides of each other in a manner to prevent the jaws 15 from spreading or separating laterally. The arms 12 terminate in oppositely bent, side opposed outer or free end portions 17'.
In use, the coil 9, is slipped on the index finger ll of the left hand 11. By compressing the coil 9 or squeezing the arms 12 together in any suitable manner the jaws 15 are opened against the pressure of said coil for receiving the cigarette 16. The device is then released and the jaws 15 close and firmly grip the cigarette in an obvious inwner. Thus, the ci arette 16 is firmly held in a convenient position for smoking while interfering only slightly with the free use of the finger and hand for various other purposes. By standing the coil 9 on end on a suitable surface the burning cigarette may be held in a substantially upright or vertical position until it is extinguished.
in the embodiment of FIGURES 5 to 8, inclusive, of the drawing, reference numeral 18 designates generally an operator for the jaws 15. in other respects this second embodiment is similar in construction to the embodiment of PlGURE-S l to 4, inclusive, of the drawing. The operator its is of suitable wire and includes at an intermediate point a coil 19 which is journaled on the base portion of one of the arms 12 adjacent the coil 9, said coil 19 having a plurality of convolutions, as shown. Formed integrally with one end of the coil 19 is a generally 8- shaped hook or cam operator 2%} which is operatively engaged with the other arm 12. Formed integrally with the odier end of the coil 19 is a thumb operator or lever 21 which terminates at its free end in a loop 2-2. The members 2n and 21 extend in substantially opposite directions from the coil in use, the hook or cam 2% permits the coil 9 to expand sufficiently toclose the jaws 15 on the cigarette 16. To open the jaws for releasing the cigarette 16, the lever 21 is actuated with the thumb 23 of the hand 11 on which the device is mounted. When the thumb lever 21 is thus actuated the hook 2i} cams on the respective arm 12. Thus, the operator 1% draws the arms 12 together against the pressure of the spring 9 and the jaws 15 are opened.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles or" the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes :will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
A cigarette holder comprising a resilient coil for mounting on a finger, spaced parallel arms having inner base portions on the ends of said coil, coacting jaws comprising integral extensions of the outer ends of the arms for receiving and gripping a cigarette therebetween, and means for opening the jaws, said means including a coil having a plurality of convolutions surrounding the base portion of one of the arms, said means further including cam and thumb operators extending in substantially opposite directions from the convolutions, said cam operator surrounding the other arm at least in part.
