Be it known that I, HERBERT K. VANDE- WALKER, a citizen of the United States, resid-' ing at Panielia Four Corners, in the county of Jefferson and State of New York, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Hay-0arriers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

In the drawings, Figure l is a view in perspective of a hay-carrier embodying the improvements of my invention. Fig. 2 is an elevalion with a portion of the side broken away to show the internal mechanism. Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of the double pulley and its serrated cam and toothed dog. Fig. 4 shows the cam and dog tripped. Fig. 5 is a view in perspective showing the last part of the load ofhay in the act of being elevated from the rack. Fig. 6 is a plan of the track. Fig. 7 is a View of one of the slings employed with this carrier. Fig. 8 is a plan View of a portion ofthe track, showing the carrier thereon Fig. 9 is a bottom plan ofthe carrier and a por tion of the track, and Fig. 10 is a side elevation of two of the rafters and the supports for one end of the track. Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the track, which is suspended by hangers B from the rafters of the barn. This track is provided with a stop-rod, C, which the trip of the carrier engages when drawn over the portion of the track where said stop'rod C is located.
C' is the trip-rod, which strikes the arm C? of the serrated dog D when the carriage moves over said trip-rod O'. rlhe carrier-frame is suspended from two axles mounted on four flanged wheels which travel on the track A. Below the serrated dog D the carrier'frame is provided with a friction-pulley, D', over which the hoisting-rope D2 runs, and the serrated dog D bites upon and holds the hoisting-rope D2 against the bottom of car, when the pull on the hoisting-rope ceases and holds the hoisting-rope at the point to which it has been drawn until the triparm C2 strikes the triprod C' and releases the bite of the dog D. At the end opposite the dog D the carrier is provided `with a pivoted bifurcated catch, F, between the arms oi' which the inner end of an open bail, F', is pivoted. The other end .of said buil F' is pivoted by a staple, F2, to the under face of the carrier-frame. Between its arms the bifurcated Catch F is provided with a link, F3, to which one end of the hoistingrope Di is connected. The hoisting-rope D2 runs down through one side of a double pulley, G, and up through the other side, thence through the open bail F',and over the frictionpulley D', and under the serrated dog D', and thence over a pulley, H, at the end of the track, out of the barn, and over a pulley, H', secured to a stake, IP, and thence to the whifiietree H". The double-pulley block G' of the double pulley G is provided with a pivoted serrated dog, I, which engages a transverse partition, G2, in said pulley-block G', :and to this dog I is connected a trip-rope, J, which runs over a pulley, K, at the end of the track opposite or farthest from the pulley H, and thence down to within reach of the operator.
In using this hay-carrier no horse-fork is required, but in lieu thereof three slings., S, are employed, and are constructed as shown in Fig. 7. The slings consist each of a single piece of rope doubled and wrapped with wire T, to form a loop, U, and wrapped also at each end to prevent them from fraying. The manner of using these loops is as follows: The first sling is laid on the bottom of the rack and spread out, the ends permitted to hang out. The hay is built upon the wagon unt-i1 onethird ofthe load has been built up, when a second sling is spread upon the hay, and the building of the4 load is continued until a second third has been added, when another sling is spread, and the last third of load is added. Vhen the barn has been reached,and the haycarrier is to be used, the loop of the upper sling is placed in engagement with the hook on the single-pulley block X, and the wired ends of the upper sling are inserted between the partition and the serrated dog in the double-pulley block, and the horse attached to the hoisting-rope. As the horse moves off, the
load is rst lifted from the rack and drawn up into engagement with the carrier, which is at ICO this time stationary, the trip of the carrier being in engagement with stop-rod C. Vhen the block of the double pulley strikes the bail F', the bifurcated catch is released from the stop-rod and the carrier may be moved along to the desired place, When the trip-rope should be pulled to release the bite of the serrated dog upon the Wired ends of the sling, which Will permit the hay to fall from the sling. The second and third slings are lifted'in the same manner, and the rack is thus unloaded.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure -by Letters Patent of the 'United States, is-
1. The combination, With the carrier-frame having four flanged Wheels, and provided With the friction-pulley D, of the pivoted bail F', the pivoted bifurcated catch F, the serrated dog D, on the pivoted triparm C2, as set forth.
2. The combination, with the carrierframe,`
its pulley D, pivoted bail, serrated dog, and pivoted hifurcated catch F, of the hoistingrope D`, the double-pulley block with its partition, pulleys, and trip-rope, and the single pulley and its open ring, substantially as speci- 3.- The combination, with the carrier-frame, its pulley D', pivoted bail, serrated dog, and pivoted bifurcated catch F, of the hoistingrope D2, the doublepulley block with its par- 3o tition, pulleys, and trip-rope, and the single pulley, its open ring, and the Wired sling, sub'- stantially as specified.
4. As a new article of manufacture, the herein-described sling, consisting of apiece of rope 35 Wired to form a loop at its middle and wired at each end, substantially as specified.
' 5. The combination, with the suspended track having the stop-rod and trip-rod and pulleys, of the carrier -frame mounted on 4o iianged wheels, and provided with the pulley D, and the serrated dog, the pivoted bail, the bifu rcated catch, and the operating-ropes, substantially as specied.
