FRESCO WORK.
No. 311,509. 'Patentd Feb. 3, 1885..

ETTORE MIRAGOLI, OF ST. LOUIS, MI SOURI.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,509, dated February 3, 1885.
Application filed April 29, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, ETTORE S. Minaccia, of St. Louis, Missouri, have made a new and useful Improvementin Fresco-lVork, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation showing one of the corner-pieces of the work; Fig. 2, a front elevation of one of the `pieces used be tween the corner-pieces; Fig. 3, a cross-see tion, upon an enlarged scale, taken through any of the pieces; and Fig. 4, a view showing the improvement applied to a wall or oeiling, a portion of the View showing the fasten ings used in applying the work.
yThe same letters of reference denote the same parts.
This improvement consists in preparing surfaces in relief, suitably coloring t-hem, and in finishing the surfaces in sections, so that the varibus sect-ions can be readily made and handled, and so that they can be applied to and combined upon the ceiling or wall in various ways, and so that, if desired, they can be removed from the ceiling or wall and -reapplied elsewhere. y
The improvement also relates to the construction of the surfaces.
In carrying out the improvement I take a sheet, A, of bibulous paper, suitably meisten it, and press it int-o a mold that is intagliated to correspond with the design to appearin relief upon the surface B.
It is desirable to press a second similar sheet, C, of/paper, into the mold against the first sheet, and perhaps a third, D, sheet against the second one, and in this respect -I do not desire to be limited to any special cemented or otherwise attached to the back of the rear sheet, D. The combined sheets 5o A C D E are then dipped in oil and dried, after which the 'front b of the surface is colored as desired, one color being applied, say,
to the background b2. and other colors to the relief b2 of the surface. In thus preparing 55 the surface in relief this advantage is obtained: the outlines of the design are supplied to the workman, and the coloring in consequence caube readily applied and with less skill than upon a plain surface. Fur- 6o ther, a better effect is produced by reason of portions of the surface being in relief.
B B Il', rse., represent the various seetions ofthe surface. Fig. 4 illustrates one mode of applying them to a ceiling or Wall, F, the sections B B being the eorner-pieces, and the sections B B being used to connect the cornersections. I
It is obvious that the sections can be place( as desired upon the ceiling or wall and rela- 7o tively combined in many ways, also that in place of a textile fabric the sheets can Ibe suit ably otherwise strengthened.
The sections may be attached in place by means of tacks G, or by other suitable means. 7 5
I am aware that it is not new to make wallpaper of a roll of embossed sheets having a complete design stamped on them.
I am also aware that ceilings and walls have been ornamented" with tiles made of 8e stamped glass, also with sheet metal, and also with designs in plaster. I am not, however, aware that walls and ceilings have been ornamented by making up the desired design of various stiff embossed paper sections, each 85 section being removable from its place in the wall at will, and constructed as described and shown.
I claim- 1. The freseowork herein described, con- 9o sisting of sheets A, C, D, and E,dipped in oil, substantially as described.
2. A fresco for a wall or ceiling composed of various removable sections grouped together to form an ornamental design, each section being made of one or more layers of paper having its portion of the complete 4. Fresco-work having a surface stamped ro design stamped in relief, and stif'ened and into relief and backed with textile fabric, and strengthened, substantially as described. dipped in oil.
3. As a new article of manufacture, afres- 5 eo for Walls or ceilings composed of separate ETTORE S. MIRAGOL'L and. removable sections B, B', Snc., of paper or analogous material stamped in relief and Witnesses: grouped together to form an ornamental de- CHAS. D. MOODY, sign. Cona E. HUNT.
