G. W. BLAKE.
. HANGER FOR PIPES. No. 311,282. Patented Jan. 27, 1885.
lUNlTlED, dramas PATENT rrieis.
GEORGE W. BLAKE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HANGER Foe PIPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,282, dated January 27, 1885.
Application filed September 1l, 18 84. (No model.)
550 all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. BLAKE, of the city and county of New York, in the State of New York, have invented a new and use ful Improvement in I-Iangers for Pipe, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to hangers whereby steam, gas, or water pipes are suspended or hung from fioorbeams or other supports, and an important object of my invent-ionisto provide a hanger which may be readily applied to pipe already connected or placed without disconnecting the pipe, in case the hangers have been overlooked or employed in insufficient number, or in case it is desired to apply them to an old line of pipe.
The invention consists, essentially, in the combination, with an eyebolt or equivalent support, of a yoke or stirrup adapted to embrace the pipe, pivoted to the said bolt or support, and composed of two sections which are separately connected or interlocked at their lower portions in such manner that they cannot become detached from each other so long as their upper ends remain pivoted to the eyebolt or support. Vhen desired to remove the hanger from the pipe, the pivot bolt or pin is removed or slipped back, and the two sections of the yoke or stirrup can then be unlocked or disconnected and removed laterally from the pipe. The hanger may be applied to the pipe by an operation or in a manner the reverse of the above.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a hanger embodying my invention. the yoke or stirrup being shown slightly in perspective. Fig. 2 is asectional view of the hanger. Fig. 3 represents a piece of pipe in dotted outline and a pair of hangers supporting the same; and Figs. 4c and 5 are respectively vertical and horizontal sectional views of a yoke or stirrup of modified form, but also embodying my invention.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
A designates the support for the yoke or stirrup B B. As here shown, the support consists of a lag-screw or screw-bolt having an eye, a, at the head, and capable of being fastfined in floor-beams O or other suitable supports. The yoke or stirrup is of cast or other metal, made in two sections, 13 B, which are interlocked or detachably connected at their lower portions, and at their upper ends are pivoted, by a bolt, 1), or pin, to the eyebolt A.
The yoke or stirrup B B will be made of any size necessary to embrace or surround the pipe to which it is to be applied, and the eyebolt or support A will be of any length adapted to the circumstances.
The two sections of the yoke or stirrup may be interlocked or constructed to interlock in any suitable manner. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the two sections are rabbeted or halved together-that is, they are provided with shoulders and overlap one another. The part or section B has a projecting spur or stud, 0, and the part B an eye or hole, (1, to receive the same. \Vhen thus secured or connected. together, the sections can be unlocked or disconnected only by an upward movement of the section B sufiicient to lift its eye or hole.
(Z off the pin or stud c, and such movement cannot be made so long as the pivot bolt or pin 1) is in place. Consequently the two sections remain-connected and cannot be unlocked or parted until the nut of the bolt or pin b is removed and the bolt or pin is shoved back sufficiently to enable the section B to be moved outward away from it, whereupon the section B may be lifted off the pin or stud c, and thus separated from the section B.
In the example of my invention shown in Figs. i and 5 the section B has a notch or socket, (1*, and the section B a head or tongue, 0*, adapted to be engaged therewith, the notch or socket and tongue or head being correspondingly dovetailed to prevent their lateral separation, and extending the full depth of the thickness of metal at the connected ends of the sections. To separate these two sections also, it is necessary to first remove the nut of the bolt or pin 1) and shove the latter back until the sect-ion B can be drawn or moved backward off the bolt or pin, and then raised to free its tongue or head 0* from the notch 01*.
The hangers may be employed to sustain a pipe, D, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3, and as the yokes or stirrups are pivoted to their eyebolts or supports, they can move or swing slightly in the direction of the line of pipe as the latter elongates or contracts by differences in its temperature.
WVhat I claim as my invention, and desire 5 to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a pipe-hanger, the combination, with an eyebolt or other support, of a yoke or stirrup composed of two sections pivoted to said bolt or support and detachably connected or 10 interlocked at their lower portions, substantially as and for the purpose herein described. 7 2. The combination, with the eyebolt orsupport, of the yoke or stirrup composed of the two sections B B, halved together as described, and constructed one with a stud or projection and the other with an eye or socket to receive the same, whereby they are detachably connected or interlocked, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.

s: o o c: L. 0 CD It is hereby certified that in Letters Patent No. 311,282, granted January 27, 1855, upon the application of George W. Blake, of New York, New York, for an improvement in Hangers for Pipe, an error appears in the printed specification requiring the following correction, viz: In line 22, page 1, the Word separately should read sepcwably; and that the Letters Patent should be read with this correction therein to make it conform to the record of the case in the Patent Oflioe.
Signed, conntersigned, and sealed this 10th day of February, A. D. 1885. I
